  1. I might fly back to MN from DC next August if I can catch a game that Alex Meyer starts featuring Buxton, Mauer, Arcia and Sano in the lineup...
  2. I agree with Seth, especially since you are swapping Rosario for Mauer. Buxton, Mauer, Arcia, Sano. Now that is a top four to get excited about!
  3. You discuss Polanco in the 2B of the future conversation. I thought he played SS?
  4. The lineup looks very promising (Especially when you add Mauer), and the bullpen could be solid and powerful. The rotation won't get us there.
  5. Ubaldo is not my guy - especially at the prices being discussed. He is going to get paid for 2 ace-like 1/2 seasons, the first half of 2010 and the second half of 2013. (Remember 2010? Dude was 15-1 at the all-star break. He only went 4-7 the rest of the way. The first half of 2013 wasn't eye-opening either.) Bold can be a good thing, but for me Ubaldo is more risky than bold at 4/$64. Something similar to The Freak's 2/$35 would bother me less.
  6. To the latter point, Twins management should take note of Allen Craig's contract. He was going into his 3rd year of serfdom this spring when they signed him to a contract that fixed the price for his arbitration years plus 2 of his FA years (one of which is a team option) Total price? 5 years $31 million (including buyout) or 6 for $43. As part of the deal they agreed to pay him $1.75 this year instead of the standard price for a 3rd year player, but that seems a small price to pay for a fairly team-friendly deal for a borderline star player entering his prime.
  7. The Cardinals might be a bit less free spending but they have plenty of stars themselves. 4 players (Beltran, Wainright, Yadi and Holliday) account for more than half their payroll (all make $12 million or more) They (similarly to Tampa) are just much better at resisting bad contracts (see Pujols, Albert), and developing (and paying) the next generation that replaces the high-priced veterans that leave for the coasts.
  8. The next number the Twins will retire is 7.
  9. And if not, I hope it is because the Twins Traded for David Price and there simply isn't room for Meyer in Minneapolis
  10. That's actually not true. He threw 78 innings this year, plus he's throwing in the AFL. That is significantly more work than Gibson put in for 2012, and he threw a touch over 150 innings this year. There is no reason to think Meyer won't be green-lighted to throw at least 150-170 next year. He will be on a similar course as Gibson was this year, so with early success he could easily throw 50+ for the Twins next year.
  11. A lot of people in the Sickels forum were saying to delay their arrivals. If they are ready, that doesn't make sense. They have them for six years, and if they succeed early they should be able to offer a contract extension that gives price certainty over their arbitration years as well as team options for a couple extra years. (see Longoria, Evan) If they go that route all but Buxton and Sano are through their "prime" years anyway (27-30). (And if they sustain success they can always throw another few years on the end.)
  12. I think this off-season is the high-water mark for the minor leagues. I predict that Sano, Meyer, and Rosario all use up their rookie eligibility in 2014. Sano and Meyer will both be up after the super-two cutoff. Rosario comes up at the trade deadline. I also think Buxton will start in AA, and like the other elite prospects before him (Trout, Machado, Harper) won't stay very long. He'll be up in September at the latest, and possibly early enough to use up his rookie eligibility.
  13. I think it will be more like $60M to post and $65M to sign. $125M total investment.
  14. I think the Twins will go after him. And I think they will be aggressive. However, I don't think they can compete with the AL or NL West on this one. $100M would be a pretty aggressive investment for MN ($40 to post; $60 to sign). Texas and LAA both have to be feeling desperate about now, and LAD seem to have no spending limit (like the Yankees of old). Sprinkle in a dash of Sea or Oak, and someone will decide to go over $100 for their total investment. I don't think MN will.
  15. This is the way I would go, too, unless Dozier can switch back to SS. Hearken back to 2003, where we had a very solid catcher in A.J., but a clearly superior option developing in Mauer. We got a very nice haul for A.J. as I recall. Similar situation with Morneau/Dougie. Also, teams are probably willing to give up a solid pitching prospect for Dozier than any of the other MLB names I've seen in comments to this point - Doumit, Burton and the like.
  16. And yes, I threw up in my mouth a little calling Correa a "lock" for the rotation.
  17. I think some combination of Hendricks, DeVries, Walters and Hernandez are released (not all 4, but maybe 2 of them?). I agree that both Albers and Diamond will be in the organization, though, and if both are with the Twins that is probably not a great thing. (Correa and Gibson being "locks" for the rotation and Deduno starting the season on IR)
  18. Also, I think Pinto and Walker are a bit high on your rankings. I would probably drop Pinto 10 spots, and Walker into the low teens. Kepler is one that should move up. I'm not sure Vargas is a top 20 prospect at all. I like him fine, but do you prefer him to Dalton Hicks? Also, I think there is skepticsm that Harrison can stay at 3rd, (not to mention a guy named Sano ahead of him in the 3B pecking order), if you consider him along with Vargas and Hicks how is he not the highest of the three on the list? Minier would make my list towards the end. Also, I have trouble keeping our talented young pitchers straight. You have Jorge and Thorpe in the low teen area, Rosario in HM, but no mention of Landa. Where does Landa fit in the pecking order?
  19. I know Nygaard's roster sheets say that Kepler needs to be added this off-season, but those same sheets say that Sano does not need to be added until after 14, and they were signed during the same International signing period. I think it is 14.
  20. I think he's a lock. For a while there I could see him finishing his career in the Piazza/Rodriguez range, with an outside shot at being mentioned with Berra/Bench. The durability issues make that a whole lot less likely, though I still think he is a fringe top 10 catcher all time.
  21. If I read the rules correctly, since Roch won the season series with Nor, they automatically advance in the event the teams are tied, correct?
  22. Gleeman actually ran some numbers demonstrating that Arcia's offensive prowess is among the greatest all-time for the Twins at his age here. Hopefully, his hitting continues to mature. His fielding should, too, though there would be a lot less pressure if Hicks and Buxton both end up in the outfield with him. I think he'll grow into at least a 0 dWAR player with more practice/repetition.
  23. While you could argue that stocking Rochester with career minor leaguers may be holding some kids back, it is important for prospects to experience winning. CR, FtM and Roch should all make playoffs this year, which is good for grooming a winning culture. I don't have the stats in front of me, but did guys like Plouffe, Parmelee, Dozier, etc play on winning minor league teams ever?
  24. Losing at the Major League level shouldn't hurt minor league talent if they establish their own culture of winning. Getting a great core of players that comes up at the same time can bring with it a winning culture. A lot of the kids that Played at E-town last year are winning again in Cedar Rapids, and Ft. Myers has played well this year, too.
