  1. The bunting is just plain dumb. Playing for one run in the early innings? Baffled. But the bullpen.... It's a close game. You have a chance to win, a very good chance. You could tell he didn't want to use Rogers/Busenitz/Hildenberger, so he brings in the B-squad. Problem is, he had to use Rogers and Busenitz anyway. Much rather start the inning with those guys and have a chance to win than use them after the game has already been lost.
  2. Last week, Twins given chances, didn't come through. This week, well, tonight, got a chance, and made them pay. A few more like this, and we get that wild card, wild game, wild chance at Yankee revenge in the Apple. Don't forget, Twins still got one series left in New York before that. Now coming into focus. It'll be big. I hope.
  3. Being given chances late, and not coming through. That adds up to coming up short on a season. Tough, but, that's how you learn at baseball.
  4. Who was pulling the strings after Molitor's ejection? If they wanted to bunt Esco to third, they should bat Adrianza for Gimenez and do that. Then hit Garver for Goodrum with a runner on third. Gotta get that guy in from second with no one out in the ninth.
  5. Buxton had a full head of steam heading into third as Cain flipped the ball toward second base. Love to see Glynn send him on plays like that Or, send the runner on first and see what the Royals do on the first pitch. Either way, second time in two weeks that Herrera leaves the game with an "injury", after Salvador Perez calls in the trainer. At some point, MLB has to have a mandatory 10-day DL when the closer comes out of the game. The reliever gets as much time as he needs, it stops the crowd, the momentum, and it's not the way baseball is supposed to work. He's not injured, he just wet his pants.
  6. 9th inning comeback wins, at home, even against a lousy team = very good experience for the young kids. And did I hear five Twins each drove in 20 runs in August? Kepler, Polanco, Buxton, Rosario and Dozier. That's great experience too, in high summer, not exactly a pennant race, but start with the Wild Card.
  7. Curious how the Moran kid wants his name pronounced. No accents, being Spanish, should be: MO - rahn. But because the announcers are typically mo-rahns, who knows?
  8. Buxton provides three very good reasons not to be bunting. And hits two homers in innings when Toronto pitching struck out the side. Seems like we have been waiting forever -- and ever -- for this kind of Buck fever, but it's here now, and he's only 23. If they get a playoff series out of this somehow, what a growth moment for the young guys.
  9. Buxton needs to develop into an XBH monster, so in theory, bunting is somewhat of a waste in his case. But, what is clear and evident from watching: he has finally calmed down in the box to the point he can bunt successfully. I'll take that steely calm from him all day long. For years and years I'll take that.
  10. Seeing Sano limp down the line at age 24 reinforces the notion that if you don't have to stress him on defense, by playing 3B, why would you? Sure, we are all pleased he can make some tough plays, but by stashing him at 1B and keeping his bat in the lineup regularly, Twins come out ahead.
  11. Thanks for this article. It has always struck me as hypothetical when scorers reconstruct innings and assume that hits and plays would have been largely the same as before an error. It many ways, inning reconstruction is akin to a cross between alternate reality and projection, based on a single sample size. All this to preserve ERA as a comparative measure of pitching performance. It really lacks in validity at the end of the day and inning. I would bet a different measure emerges, more grounded in pitching metrics as to velocity/break/location that assess a pitcher's qualities and not the incidental results produced -- or not produced -- during an inning when expected defensive play has not been the norm. For now, can we measure Actual ERA vs. Attributed ERA?
  12. And the answer is: Because Sano is a cornerstone piece to the offense, you do not expose him to injury on defense. Sano looks good now at 3B, though apparently the metrics see him as average, but over time, with a better defender at third, the rationale for playing him there erodes, and then, just disappears -- decline, lack of mobility, injury risk. It's going to happen quicker than TD posters realize, maybe as soon as contract extension. You don't put $20M on a spot that pre-disposes his bat to being out of the lineup.
  13. I can think of 275 reasons to move him off third base. Hey look, he pulls a muscle on a play like he made last night, he's out for a month. Go find me another 275 lb third sacker, ever, in the history of MLB. Long run, you protect a guy that drives in runs by playing him at a position he can make plays and not get hurt. Hopefully he can pick it at 1B, but that's his future. 100% guarantee on that.
  14. On Rooker: His presence looms large since the Twins have an upcoming vacancy at first base, and had no particularly attractive long-term solution before Rooker joined the organization. Um, Miguel Sano, dollars to donuts, is a 1B for 29 teams in MLB. He is 6'4", 275 lbs and likes to snack. Twins best start looking for third sacker, preferably one that doesn't strike out so much.
  15. Yah, that was '84. Gaetti made the key error on a throw. When asked about it, the Rat said: "It's pretty hard to throw a baseball with both hands around your throat." Then, three years later, they win the World Series, with Gaetti MVP in AL Championship Series. Takes some epic fails in order to win at baseball. That said, the Twins brass has made some good moves this year, but keeping Gimenez catching is not one of them. Putrid offense and now, alarmingly bad on defense. What Twins pitcher would want him to catch their game?
  16. Sano takes more blame than Belisle, IMHO. He is not laying off the low outside sliders, strking out half the time. Should have turned the DP in the 8th. Twins will only go as far as Miggy Jr takes them.
  17. Royce Rolls... into Iowa. That will be a test of his esteemed character.
  18. It doesn't matter if Twins make Wild Card or not. They won't go anywhere in playoffs. But, believing they are in it, and believing they are playing crucial games in August and September -- that's priceless for the young players. Maybe they take a step forward. And, still waiting on Buxton to become the XBasehit monster Twins need. SO rate must be down recently.
  19. Mejia going to the shelf. Who is the next guy? Gee? Melville? Slegers?
  20. Bunting Buxton with the winning run in scoring position? To get to Adrianza? That's not just old school, that's dumb school. And, because of Rosario, it worked!
  21. I've been tracking this: after a long road trip, the first game at home is virtually guaranteed that they come out flat and lose. Happens all the time. That said, they have a thin offense, especially when Sano and Mauer are not producing. They got lucky early, and now, they don't got enough to pressure the other team.
  22. Always fun to speculate but as in years' past, the Twins scrap pile is not where good teams go to become more competitive. We may love our guys, but other teams don't.
  23. The point is, they traded a rock solid young, controllable catcher, that everyone knew was a stud, for a zipless RH reliever that made Ron Davis look like an All-Star. Because,... the media wanted a "closer".
  24. Granite is going to force OF decisions: Buxton, gotta keep him and hope he becomes that elite defender with huge speed and extra base, if not HR, power. Kepler, gotta think about keeping him, smooth defender, fast, X-base power, good control of strike zone, and high upside. Rosario, best hitter on the team, increasing strike zone control, good arm, X-base power, but, hate to say it, a bit of a head case if you look closely at some of his play this year. Grossman, on-base monster, some power, but decent speed, good extra guy, switch-hits, hack in the outfield. That leaves Granite. You can see that in another year, the kid will be terrific at the plate and on the bases, and a capable defender, above average. And, guess what? Twins need a lead-off man, who gets on, steals bases, and pressures the other team. But, with Rosario and Kepler swinging left, it's redundant to keep all three. How the Twins work through this outfield surplus and what they get in return, will shape this team for years to come. Hard to let go of Rosario, because his forearms and wrists are so strong, and he has passion, but, given everything, he's the one I'd trade for pitching.
  25. Pohlads need to get some credit. They bought a couple prospects who are close to ready. I think they often get a bad rap. They probably just need a FO team they can trust to explain why these moves are good investments. And it is an investment.
