  1. All I can say is the Twins must be doing pretty friggin' awesome if the top subject of conversation on this site is whether to keep a 29-year-old AAAA catcher or a 25-year-old AA outfielder on the 40-man roster. Neither has much upside. The catcher actually has some trade value, once he proves to be healthy. The outfielder obviously doesn't have any trade value, considering that 25 teams passed on even making a waiver claim on him. MEH
  2. Benson is a AA player. There are plenty of AAAA players available if they want to let a cheap bat like Willingham go for the pittance they will receive for him in players. Also, Parmelee and Matroianni deserve to be mentioned as possibilities.
  3. Good job. I especially like how you own how some of your predictions going into the season have not panned out. One nit: I think the Twins have more shortstop talent than they have had in a very long time. Santana is a special talent who should be ready within the next three years. But I really like what the Twins have at Cedar Rapids in Jorge Polanco and Niko Goodrum. I can't remember when we have had two such middle infield prospects at the same level at the same time. Still and all, the central point is true: Florimon is shaping up to be a decent stop gap until one of those three is ready. He's a good find for the organization.
  4. You don't spend your #4 overall pick on the future Drew Butera (his floor).
  5. This all seems right. Except that he was in open defiance against the organization, as witnessed by our fellow poster Thrylos as recently as last week. You can't have guys on the team who seem utterly incapable of handling their current adversity and drag the other guys down in the process. Maybe you're a bit more tolerant of a guy who has a chance to start. But not for a fourth outfielder.
  6. This. He was a bad draft pick. Should have played football. Worked his tail off to learn to hit this well, which is not good enough for major league pitching. He's Mastroianni with more power and less strike zone judgement. These guys are floating around the waver wire all the time. And his injuries are starting to pile up, making him worse prospects than Clete Thomas or Antoan Richardson.
  7. All pitchers are riskier than position players. But the rewards are higher. With Menaea gone, the Twins will likely take Stewart (unless some idiot passes on one of the big three). Shipley is a possibility, but Stewart's upside is higher than any pitcher in this draft, any person after the big three. That is what the Twins focus on more than anything.
  8. No high school catcher is "ready for the majors defensively". Maybe he's good at catching 80 MPH fastballs and 70 MPH slurves. Maybe he's got a strong arm. But that does not mean he can call a game, manage an at bat, or set the defense. There's a lot more to catching than having tools.
  9. It's more than you typically get for a center fielder who will not likely get on base more than a third of the time and who has no power and no arm.
  10. Thrylos posted something recently about his visit to a Red Wings and Iron Pigs. The post was primarily about Gibson's near no hitter. But he had some interesting comments about Benson in it. In a nutshell, Benson had the worst body language he had ever seen. He slammed helmets, pounded his bat on the ground, and spent most of his time in the dugout with his head in his hands. As poorly as he played, his body language screamed "Release me!"
  11. I don't understand letting center field depth leave. Ramirez is not a center fielder. Thomas is not a center fielder. Richardson is a journeyman. Morales hasn't played above single A. WTF?
  12. Watching Hernandez get shelled reaffirmed in me the notion that, in today's game, if guys don't respect your fastball, they just sit offspeed, keep their hands back and hit ropes. I don't want Albers. I don't want Walters. I want Gibson. Then Meyer.
  13. It has to be Gibson. They used Mastro's spot for Colabello. They will likely use Woods' spot for Deduno. They are running out of 60-day DL candidates. I suppose they could DFA someone. But whom?
  14. Ryan said in an interview, "if you asked a scout who had never seen him, he would say that he's been a second baseman his whole career."
  15. Thank you. You've brightened my day!
  16. Let's recap. In the last five years, they've changed GMs twice, replaced the guy who runs the draft, the guy who runs player development, every coach and manager in the minors, the minor league coordinator, the minor league hitting and pitching instructors, and five major league coaches. From the outside, this does not appear to be a change-averse organization. They have said they don't make moves just to make moves, and that they value continuity. But you don't fail repeatedly and keep your job. Changes are already happening. Three roster moves this week. And more to come. Patience.
  17. I'm not all that happy about this. But I can understand it. Deduno was scheduled to start the year in place of Hendriks until he hurt his groin in the WBC championship game. This is how long it has taken him to work back to his former position. He has done nothing to suggest he doesn't deserve to get his spot back now that he's ready (unlike DeVries). Deduno can be a great asset to this team, either as a solid starter or trade bait. They have to get him up here to prove it, though. I also think the Twins will not be all that patient with the other guys in the rotation. We'll see Gibson soon enough, and he'll start 15 games or so before they have to shut him down.
  18. Shades of Kyle Gibson. Too bad we don't have any sandwich picks.
  19. He's on the fast track. I think he will spend the second half of 2013 in Fort Myers. I think he will start 2014 in AA, and get promoted to AAA mid-year, with a September call-up. I think he'll be the starting center fielder in 2015. With his tools and uncommon maturity, it is not all that outlandish.
  20. The projected pitching staff when Buxton arrives in 2015: Meyer Gibson May Diamond Baxendale/Worley When Buxton is the core of a team of stars including Sano, Rosario, Arcia and Mauer, the rotation will look like this: Meyer Berrios Gibson May Baxendale
  21. I don't think Meadows will be the best player available at #4. You say he has all five tools, but he does not have a ton of power and his arm is destined for left field. As a pure hitting left fielder, Frazier is the better prospect. Still, at 3-4, there are two better players than either of these high school position players--Manaea and Bryant. And if the Twins want a high-schooler, I'd rather have Stewart than either bat.
  22. I don't think it's a hard date. It's on a percentage basis. I believe the player needs to be in the top 20% of his rookie class. If it's a particularly light year for rookies, it might go to July.
  23. My mock: Appel Gray Bryant Manaea Who cares If they pass on Manaea, I will be very put out.
  24. It depends on who's left. If Manaea is there, I'd be disappointed if they didn't take him. Ditto Bryant. I figure one or the other will be there. In other words, I'd be disappointed if they took anybody but Meneae or Bryant.
  25. Odds are, it's Gibson because of the 40-man issue. If they had found some damage in Wood's shoulder, maybe. But the MRI came in clean. So they probably don't want to 60-day DL him.
