  1. I have no idea why you think it's a Mauer vs. Parmalee in the lineup. Mauer always hits. His preferred position is Catcher, both by him and by the Twins. Parmalee rates to be the RF more than 1B. If there is "competition" it is between Parmalee and Doumit and a comparison between them both offensively and defensively at RF is in order--Mauer isn't in the analysis.
  2. Gosh, it would be a real bummer if Gibson "Hicks-up" after all of the posts screaming for his promotion.
  3. It seems the Twins are forced to play Morneau and Willingham regularly through July in hopes of making a useful trade. But starting in August, time to clean house and go with youth. Protect Gardy's job by playing veterans in hope of more wins? These veterans aren't any more likely to win than the present youth on the active roster. And Gardy's job? Whew, that's a whole 'nother thread.
  4. Hernandez gets a start to: a) showcase him as trade bait (somebody needs a LHP), prove himself as functional to serve as the replacement for Duensing, or c) just to "hold a place" until Pelfrey returns. Maybe all three.
  5. Trade Corriera for a low A ball pitcher? Wow, just trade to trade? A surviving ML SP for some ? who will have to buy a ticket to be in a ML stadium?? That makes zero sense. Somebody has to pitch and [sadly] right now KC is the best of the bunch. True, he is a place-holder--but he is paid to be just that. Frankly, all of the "shiny toys" brought-up from Rochester are failures and we have every reason to think the next batch will "get their bruises too." They can wait until September for said bruises if all that KC can fetch is "a low A-ball pitcher". The Twins just drafted 7 more of them, plus all of those in 2012--they are "full" of those pitcher-types. What the Twins lack is major league pitchers--and KC is one of them.
  6. Doumit has been "the big bat" for about 2weeks (except tonight) so Gardy created space to play him every day. Makes sense to me. However before his hot streak, Doumit was worthy of only backup Catcher and some pinchhitting duty. Perhaps he has "cooled-off"? Willingham is ice cold. Oh, and Parmalee says " you can shove this thread"! So maybe Gardy decides to play Parmalee for a week. We'll see.
  7. Willingham had said the third year was the dealmaker. In retrospect maybe they shouldn't have offered three years, then it is quite like the Twins would have had the worst record in MLB last season and would have selected first in the Rule 4 Draft this year. Maybe they would have taken Appel?
  8. I am aware that the TD is really minor league focused--that's OK. I don't really care to spend energy following minor leaguers--just not my bag. Sure, I'm glad that the Twins quite likely have two future all-stars--and I eagerly await to watch them when they play for the Twins. I'm actually amused that posters bicker about "prospects" rankings, especially below the top 10 because I sincerely doubt that they have 10 future all-stars in the system. Also, don't quote me names of players already on the Twins--because they are no longer prospects--they're here and it's time to justify the committment by the franchise to develop them. "...something decent..." I agree in principle, but probably differ in reality. Something decent means [to me] someone the Twins can use in 2014 and for years to come. It doesn't mean some ?-mark in Class A with the dubious tag of "high upside". The Twins just drafted a bunch of "high upside" types to fill the bottom levels of the organization with "hopefuls", there no need to waste a useful MLB SP for a ?-mark. If KC can be traded (say bundled with some other guys) to get some real MLB talent--sure!--I'm all for it! Color me skeptical that that would actually happen, especially if said talent costs $10MM or more.
  9. The Twins need major league talent. Following the Twins' PR, they have "replenished their system and are one of 'the best' in MLB. Except for that one televised Kernels game, I haven't seen any of them play (much less frequently enough) to assess their potential. But the FO proudly exclaims their "prospects"--so I'll run with that for now. More "prospects"? I need to have a firm definition of the term "prospect". To me, this is some who is projected to be an above average MLB player, and stick around for several years. Sadly, the way that word is tossed around on this board, it is anybody who just might get a cup of coffee. To me, there are no "B" or "C" prospects--those guys are just fillers so the affliates can put 9 on the field. If Corriea (and other disposable asset) could be bundled to acquire a quality ML player--sure! But to obtain an "A" ballplayer--nah. The Twins have plenty of those. Since Ryan is the GM, I fully expect him to stick to his philosophy of "lots of arms". Presently, KC is the best performer of that bunch at the ML level--and the rest are looking rather spotty. The plan doesn't include high-priced pitching, so trading a "value-priced" guy for a ?-mark doesn't make sense, especially in light of the FO boasts of the "rebuilt system". If KC (and whatever) does fetch some real quality, Ryan might make the deal. But, if said quality came with an 8-figure price tag--well that just isn't The Twins way.
  10. The Twins need to change their philosophy from quantity to quality. The term "prospects" has been debased on this board to the level of "might get to the majors", those aren't the type of guys to seek. Reference Ryan's preseason statement of "lots of arms". The Twins have "lots of arms" pitching at the AAA level and Minnesota. What they don't have is a solid five who all produce to major league standard. Nor three who produce well above major league standard. This same philosophy must be used for hitters as well as pitchers. Most of the recent wins have come from a result of power hitting a skill that has been in short supply.
  11. Considering there are 30 franchises, is signing one top 30 every year difficult?
  12. Why are you assuming that this "significant upgrade player" wouldn't be retained? Or is it just the Twins bias against big contracts?
  13. How many think the FO will acquire a player before July 31 that resembles a significant upgrade over who they are playing right now? OK, stupid question its been 10 years since they did that.
  14. Weren't you one of many posting preseason that Diamond was a "lock", a "given", and basically "the rock of the rotation for 2013"?--and beyond? I'm curious how many of the frequent posters on TD will be casting stones Diamond's way? This is borderline trolling. Please be careful about "casting stones." Your friendly neighborhood moderator.
  15. No! Doumit is playing everyday--because he has been the most productive hitter on the team. Morneau is playing because he is Morneau. Arcia is playing because the Twins have big plans for him and to sit him on the bench in Minneapolis is foolish. Willingham is still their RH hammer, though now he is getting some help, and sitting Willingham alo makes no sense. Parmalee is the odd man out because he isn't one of th favorites and isn't scorching like Doumit. Gardy is known to have favorites and to "play the hot bat". Morneau won't be a Twin next year. The paring of the payroll combined with "the rebuild with youth" make his exit inevitable. His replacement willbe either Parmalee or Doumit. Even Gardy is aware that Doumit in the OF is "playing with fire". Parmalee has shown he is quite capable in the OF and Doumit catching ability should make him serviceable at 1B and definately better there than in the OF. Doumit will still be the #2 catcher.
  16. Discussion about which metric to use for Corriea completely misses the obvious--he is the poster-boy for Ryan's offseason plan to acquire "value-veterans" for the rotation. "Prospects" (the mother's milk of TD posters), Ryan just drafted a bunch of them. There is no need to trade a succeeding SP who would never be prized by the rest of MLB to part with a "top prospect" to acquire.
  17. Complete the circle of your logic: "Plouffe isn't good enough to fetch anybody" [worthwhile], turn him into a bench player [super utility?], keeping him because the Twins historically have kept bench players worse than Plouffe. At this rate Plouffe enters arbitration as a starting 3B who gets to yelp about his HRs--on a team that is paying $14MM for one guy to hit 3 and $23MM to hit 7 in by late June--total year projection for both is about 25 total! Plouffe becomes very expensive--for a "super-utility" player. Plouffe needs to be moved--either packaged in a trade with others to get a quality major league player, or as the SS of the Twins and live with his defense. IMO Plouffe's defense not much worse than Florimon's, but he will hit much better than Florimon. In short, keeping Plouffe means paying him. The salary Plouffe would command is way beyond that of a "super-utility", Plouffe would have to start [somewhere].
  18. ..."and retain all of [the] top prosects." How about those "top prospects" that were acquired from '04-'09 when the Twins were looking for SP for, '10,'11, and '12? Several have been waived, some failed at the ML level, some are marginal though still at the ML level. "..spent like a drunken sailor"? I don't know what your level is for "drunken sailor spending" but it sounds like whatever exceeds league salary average.
  19. The fallacy of your premise was shown in the 2012 draft--if a #1 SP was the cornerstone Appel should have been drafted rather than Buxton. While a strong case can be made for a top SP vs the top "toolsy" OF, it's clear that the Twins don't agree with that hypothesis.
  20. Yes! The Minnesota Twins is one of the best franchises for pitcher development.
  21. All the talk about FA pitching has focused on this past off-season--but the Twins have needed SP every season! They needed it in '07 and who did they get? Anybody to solve a known chronic problem? No. They needed SP in '08, and signed Livan Hernandez. They needed SP in '09 and settled for an August waiver wire. Needed SP in '10, '11, '12, and now in '13. Same story. The Twins were afraid to test the FA market for SP that required a multi-year contract to sign (lone exceptions: the oft-injured Pavano, and Correia, because neither would sign for less than two years). Every season they crawl out to the SP dumpster to find "arms" for one-year contracts when anybody can see that they need quality that will stay, and that means multi-year contracts. I guess when you tell the owner that you have a shortcut to success with inexpensive pitching--inexpensive pitchers get signed.
  22. Include Plouffe with other(s) and see if a REAL 1B can be acquired. Or, a quality, ML, starting pitcher. Plouffe isn't a 3B, he a place holder, and definately not an OF.
  23. "When the windows open"--Whose window is open? Not the Twins' window! It has been established that the main objective of the FO is to reduce payroll--only question is to what level? Win? The high-priced tickets always sell. "Winning" will sell out the rest (low profit) seats, but at the price of a significantly higher payroll--OOPS, there went the profit from selling the "popularly-priced" seats. Or wasn't that real reason Carl changed GMs in 2007. Whatever. If the Twins are committed to winning soon, they will need a massive upgrade in hitting or in pitching. The success of "the prospects" (gosh what an abused word on the board) at Rochester hasn't translated to success at Minnesota. The salivating over certain "prospects" at even lower levels truly needs to be tempered. The Twins do have "a window"--but they need to open it and start acquiring some major league talent. There has been much discussion over Gibson (and now some on Albers) that they should be promoted. If Ryan is truly committed to winning in 2014/15 perhaps he is thinking of a blockbuster trade involving high-level prospects and some shiny (or even dull), but disposable major league talent for legitimate power hitting. Of course that entails the risk of failure and might even mean an outlay of significant cash.--Nah, that ain't the Twins Way.
  24. Trade: ____, ______, and/or _____. Please be realistic, Twins players aren't "in demand". Any trade the Twins propose will be viewed as a salary dump, refer to: Young an Hardy.
  25. Pelfrey fits the Twins concept of pitchers: cheap, available to pitch, and "attacks the strikezone".
