  1. It sounds to me that this is a wakeup call to Hicks--don't assume and play to maximum effort. I also agree with Chief, if nobody is ever thrown out trying for an extra base, then you're not aggressive enough.
  2. I think Morneau gets moved in August on a waiver deal--for nothing.
  3. The Cespedes FA signing was huge. But of course signing FAs isn't "the right way" to rebuild a team.
  4. I had always wondered what was the Twins final offer for Cliff Lee? These posts make it sound as if Hicks was the deal-breaker--was it?
  5. Maybe they are expecting a fire-sale and are grousing that one didn't happen?
  6. Deduno signed with the Red Wings--not the Twins.
  7. Ryan gets no credit for Deduno. Ryan removed him from the 40-man roster after last year--which says "we don't see a future for you". Deduno's considerable success at the WBC (and the resulting fame) combined with the failure of Ryan's Plan A "fix" for the rotation permitted another chance for Deduno. To Deduno's credit he has shown some very strong character as well as skills to indicate that he is worthy of being in the the rotation.
  8. The report you cited expressed that SS is probably not his final position and that his range was "not elite". If the Twins are committed to find a future SS, Greenwood likely isn't the proper choice. The report also claimed very considerable quality depth at pitcher. Though pitcher selection are riskier than SS, it does seem logical that the Twins should choose the best pitching prospect.
  9. Risk in trading Span and Revere? How many times have we heard the Twins screaming about about Buxton? Hicks was also touted--though not to the same extent as Buxton. Mastroianni (and Benson and Thomas) were also placeholders for Buxton. No! You can't claim "risky trade" and "super drafting" out of the other side of your mouth. The trades were actually risk averse--selling excess players at their peak value, in order to acquire the very much needed pitching.
  10. A better reason to leave Plouffe at 3B is that if he has a solid second half and a strong 2014 those hitting stats are far more valuable as a trading chip if Plouffe is a 3B rather than a 1B.
  11. I'm not a FO defender but when St. Peter says "we're comfortable with a budget in the $80-85MM range they were aware that this was a second straight year of cutting payroll. I got flamed this Spring by suggesting that the overall plan was to slash payroll and replace the expensive veterans with cheap rookies ("Source Please!"). Let's wait until next Spring and see if any major developments occurred. When I read comments like "we want to do this 'the right way' " my skepticism alarms. but, I guess patience must be in order before said claim can be repeated--but... .
  12. They are still new players! If you don't draft your own, you have to get them from some other team. Oh, I forgot Gibson in my list. Count up 2011 and 2012's new players too--there are lots of them--most just don't last very long.
  13. League average with a well above average salary. I expect the Twins will have him through the rest of the season.
  14. How long do you think a career lasts? How many new players did the Twins have this year? Mmm let's see--Hicks, Arcia, Theilbar, Collabello, The two new callups, got to be more relief pitchers--i can't remember them all. So forget two/year.
  15. Two?? Not even close unless you are talking about a franchise that is built on free agents. Consider that there are 25 on an active roster, if only two per year then major leauge careers need to average 12 1/2 years! They don't. The Twins need to average 4 to 5 new major leaguers every year when injuries, flameouts, failures, and players lost to free agency are considered. Unless, they expect other teams to develop their players (free agents) for them.
  16. I don't wish to sound mean, but your post and mine aren't related at all. My post was in reference to the posts about the drafts of 2001-2009. That post (and others) continually defend poor results in the draft do to a later selection. The Twins had second priority in 2000 and whiffed terribly--and there were many future major leaguers--even future all-stars after the 1st Round. Your conclusions of the 2011 indicate that the Twins whiffed badly in 2011--but I am confident that are plenty of future MLers that were selected after Micheal, just not by the Twins.
  17. +1. I had perceived that this "nugget of information" from the Pohlad's was completely self-serving too. DSP was interviewed at the start of the season saying "we are comfortable with the payroll in the $80-85 MM range." So, I wonder what he will say in 2014? There will be about $29MM in payroll removed from expired contracts after 2013, (I am assuming that Burton will receive a new contract so I am not including him in my estimate). Will the Twins be spending all (or most) of that? Given their "nugget" from this thread how do they intend to "square" Ryan's 2014 budget if it isn't in the same $80-85MM range?
  18. Examine the 2000 draft. It was loaded with future major leaguers and many who were an all-star. The Twins lone success: Jason Kubel. The Twins selected second.
  19. I refuted that premise yesterday with Tampa's drafts.
  20. No, Jon Rausch didn't screw-up. His save % was better than what Nathan used to post. Gardenhire plain didn't trust him, didn't think he was good enough despite his success on the field. Smith held Gardenhire off to try and make a deal with Seattle for Cliff Lee, but when that fell through--he caved in to Gardenhire's screams "for a real closer"--Matt Capps. To say the least Rausch was PO'd, his chance to make the jump to closer and their big salaries evaporated. We fans, had to chew on Capps and the lack of Ramos simply because Gardenhire couldn't stick with Rausch. Rausch didn't fail--Gardenhire and Smith failed.
  21. Somehow this thread has moved to the draft. Many posts (in other threads) have rationalized that the Twins were penalized by drafting late and that the FO should be excused--so I looked up Tampa Bay's rotation (as they are often cited for solely being successful due to early draft position)--and here's what I found (yahoosports): Chris Archer Cleveland Round 6 haven't yet found out he got to TB, but a 6th rounder Jeremy Hellickson Round 4 2005 Roberto Hernandez signed as a 19,20 yr old out of DRep. by Cleveland Matt Moore 8th round 2005 David Price 1st OA 2007 Some of these guys (Price and Hernandez) not signable by the Twins--but the other three could have been drafted and signed! Point--there is major league talent past the first 50. The claim of too late to draft well--is refuted. I could add that Tampa drafted very early for many years until the 2008 season--and not always successfully!
  22. The "Win" stat was relevant when pitchers pitched the entire game. Given the explosion of relief pitchers used much of its value is diluted--but it's not useless. Posters have stated other metrics measuring pitchers--but missing is the contribution of the rest of the team anyway. Superior (or substandard fielding), psychological elements (for all) play significant roles. I don't think there is a rubric that incorporates every factor and eliminates the contributions of a pitcher's teammates.
  23. He wasn't traded, he was non-tendered. Ryan and Gardenhire prefered Matt LeCroy because: (not in any order) LeCroy batted RH and "could play" Catcher; would have been paid rookie minimum salary as opposed to Ortiz going to 1st arbitration; and Ortiz played 1B or DH and "quarreled" with management about pulling the ball and hitting HRs. Feel free to insert any "Ryan comment" you wish. Smith "overplayed his hand" and disrespected the Yankees and the Red Sox after Smith asked for "their best offer"--so they withdrew their offers. Any of the Red Sox offers were better than the Mets offer (and Smith tried to "jack them around too", but they learned of NYY and BOST's withdrawals and turned the table on Smith). Smith had his leverage--but judged badly--thus proving he was way over his level at the GM position.
  24. I know the Twins will be on a low budget (duh!). The likelihood that Morneau, Blackburn, and Pelfrey will be off next year's payroll (likely others--but these will suffice for my point) The opens enough salary (may I include that "unused part the Pohlad's claim existed for 2013?) to very aggressively seek Matt Garza who not only has the combonation of appropriate age and skills but also a fire/grit in him to warrant (the dreaded swear word--overpay) as the primary pitcher to add to the rotation--with the plan to keep him long-term rather than the placeholders signed last year. There would still be enough to a sign a Baker to a 1 year deal (or 2 if he wants) as a second FA pitcher with an eye as another placeholder-type--unless of course his performance warrants a longer contract (after 2014). There is still money left over.
