  1. Are all Wins the same? Example: some teams crush the lesser teams but struggle against the better teams. Matchups? Some teams are dominated by one or two outstanding players, while others are far more balanced. The playing field--higher winning teams get to play an extra game on their field--or some teams are configured for their home field, ergo NYY has many LH power hitters. How is that reflected in the analysis?
  2. Torii represents the past--a very fine past, but the past. We can wax nostolgic over his nightly web gems but the Twins need to move to the future. Torrii can help an already playoff team (one with deep pockets), but the Twins aren't in that category.
  3. Let's not pipe dream about 2013. There is merit in trading some talent--provided the yield is bountiful. It's tempting to trade Willingham, but to dismiss his future contributions is just wrong. Consider the near revolt of season ticket holders after 2011, trading every useful veteran position player except for Mauer would yield a volcanic eruption. What's so wrong with older pitchers? Most of those in the next wave of Twins talent is at least two years away so some placeholders are needed--people better than the 2012's rotation to say the least. It's the owner's money, not yours. If we fans have to watch a losing team in 2013, at least make them interesting enough so that there is some realistic chance that the team could win the day's game.
  4. Minor league FA don't cost much anyway. Since the operating agreement between Rochester and the Twins was recently renewed maybe there was a codicil to "improve" the Red Wings? There were a great many moves the last two years and that stresses the AAA team--they are a business too!--so improving Rochester may also improve the Twins as well.
  5. What about Trevor Plouffe? Are you implying trading him for Bauer straight up???[/Q Yes. wow..... The original article has a premise of "no OFers" because AZ has plenty of them, requires a package that doesn't contain an OF. To include Gibson is likely self-defeating--Twins require pitching--so trade something else. True, I am skeptical about Plouffe and consider him "tradeable", but many teams are seeking HR hitters at 3B, (and in AZ) I think Plouffe might be considered more than useful. Plouffe is at the ML level (now) and as such is more valuable than most "prospects" the Twins can offer. I infer most other poster are also skeptical about Plouffe. Most teams are forced to compromise at 3B simply because there aren't enough of them that hit and field the position at the desired level and Plouffe may be someone that AZ places value. Could the Twins add to this offer?--Yes.
  6. Ouch! That's a painful reminder to me--Stanton the OF the Twins should have drafted instead of Revere. I favor Sano beginning at Ft. Meyers and hopefully at mid-season earning a promotion to New Britain.
  7. Span is a very good CF and leadoff man who is on a pretty team friendly contract. Revere is a slap hitting, noodle arm (albeit great range) who projects to be a PR and a 4th OF. The difference between Span and Revere is quite Large. Span's one real "weakness" is getting picked off to much, Revere's weaknesses include: zero arm, zero power, zero ability to draw a walk (because of his zero power) And I actually am one of the Revere supporters here, but its just reality. Amen to all about Span. He is one of the most productive players on the team--OK a bad team, but still Span would represent an improvement over most CFs--especially on a cost-adjusted basis. Ergo, money that didn't have to be spent to get those 4 Wins can be applied to upgrade at another position to improve the WAR rating there.
  8. I think that signing many veteran, marginal pitchers in hopes that one or two "stick" is pointless. Those used last year were "placeholders"--replacing them with older "placeholders" is not a step in the right direction. Seek pitchers who can help now and in the future--and could be signed to stay when the younger talent matures.
  9. What about Trevor Plouffe? Are you implying trading him for Bauer straight up??? Yes.
  10. Trevor Plouffe. My guess--he never duplicates that 6 week streak of (bases empty!) HRs ever again. Goodness knows he isn't "all-that" in the field either. A potentially future, dominant pitcher looks better to me than Plouffe.
  11. In July only a couple of teams looking to add, but before April many teams need a power hitter. But if trading Span is their preference--so be it! The Twins have a bevy of other CF options, but power hitting options?--none.
  12. First off, Hicks hasn't even reached AAA. Revere's proven he can hit big-league pitching. Revere's D is the best--far better than Span's. Also, on the basepaths, he forces pitchers to pay attention to him and makes Mauer better. Mauer was a .270 hitter with a propensity for double plays prior to Revere. When pitchers had to respect Revere and toss more fastballs to Joe, the DPs went WAY down and the average increased. (Mind you, I'm not attributing ALL of Mauer's success to Revere, but the speed does fit well into the lineup...) Mauer has consistently hit better than .300 for years--long before Revere. Revere isn't better defensively than Span. Twins' need for SP is so high that if someone wants Revere--his replacements already exist, and they project far higher.
  13. A 66-96 team doesn't get turned around in a year. Solve the pitching problem first. If Willingham is traded to solve the starting pitching shortage, it will soon become obvious that the lack of power hitting is the next big problem--not middle infielders. The threads on Twins minor league prospects mostly agree on the need for further development of the top prospects--but some of them wll be full-time starters in 2014. Just because Ryan talks of "competing" in 2013--realistically what else can he say?--we fans should not delude ourselves that a 25 win improvement is likely next season. Build the foundation, then add to it. The minor league system has to become a consistent provider of useful talent and that takes time and likely early selections in the draft--90 losses +--for at least one more year.
  14. As time goes by, everybody tires, the little fast guys slow down but the big guys stay big.
  15. Amen. Separate teams should not be a requirement either. Keeping Span until Buxton can replace him a viable option if Revere and Hicks were traded. I am not fixated on keeping a specific player of the three-headed CF monster of Span/Revere/Hicks--trade two of the three if necessary, but build a rotation.
  16. i'm curious as why there aren't any rumors about SEA?
  17. Apparently you are unaware of the previous trade with Tampa when A Twins SP wasn't adequate for an OF--which is true. OF play every game, pitchers one in five.
  18. There is an easy fix to this. Due to Revere's extreme contact proficiency,it is more beneficial for him to simply stop swinging when he gets ahead in the count, and avoid terminating his at-bat prematurely by putting a ball in play. Specifically if he avoided swinging on all 2-0, 3-0, and 3-1 counts, I believe he could raise his OBP .040 or .050 points or more overnight. I made some rough calculations to arrive at that conclusion here: Except that he rakes (singles) on these counts and builds his Bavg significantly. Taking on these pitches would force him to get his hits with 2 strikes--a difficult task.
  19. I believe that Morneau will also be dealt. Starting pitching is a requirement--and the Twins need it! There are also plenty of other options for 1B besides Morneau.
  20. They draft extremely well. The prospects received for Garza and Kazmir have not panned out. A good salesman could trade major league talent. A slick trader could trade a couple for Shields and a decent pitching prospect. Is Ryan a "slick trader"?
  21. Perhaps a step back to reflect. Ryan has stated that starting pitching was the #1 priority, that he would get three new starting pitchers, and that the Twins would compete. Failing that mission of three new SPs would leave him with neglible creditability for any future announcements. It makes no sense to add three warm bodies like those used in 2012 and proclaim "I signed three new pitchers". These guys have to have creditability as SPs. It is also known that the Twins have an excess of young OFs. The decision comes down to how important is it to acquire those three SPs and which of the young OFs should the Twins trade. Span has performed well, but let's face it the Twins haven't placed a high value on him. Span didn't get promoted in '07 when it was clear that Hunter was not staying. Span was evaluated as "not the next CF" in the player evaluation before the '08 season. The contract he was offered (and signed) was clear indication that the Twins did not consider him an "elite" CF. I like Span a lot, but I sense the Twins not-so-much. He has been "on the market" before so I conclude that Ryan intends to move him this off-season. If we conclude that he "is gone", then for who? As part of a package for decent SP, then his leaving is not in vain. I would not be surprised if the Twins make a deal with Tampa that there will be multiple players from both teams involved and that Span and Shields are simply the most established players in the deal.
  22. Twins need to be in a youth movement. Poof has big problems, but if he can continue to hit HRs--he becomes trade bait, maybe evn for pitching!
  23. Shields would be a tentpole for the rotation. Two years of team control at his salary is very affordable. It's time to make a serious offer.
  24. I am one of those who made the comment ..." would have to pay MORE..." . Free agents are savvy, and have the confidence earned from the experience of success. These men are adults--careers don't last forever--they must "look out for #1" and decide how best to meet their personal goals. Each man has his personal agenda, and money and winning are going to rank very high on their personal priority list. Face it, the Twins are not one of the premier franchises, Minneapolis has a boring cache`, and the Twins are known to be penny-pinchers. True, the Twins can and have paid well for a few players, but when it comes time to reach for the stars--they don't. Any FA who signs with the Twins this year will be well aware that the Twins aren't going to the world series any time soon and that man will require additional payment to compensate for the lack of winning as well as being in Minnesota.
