  1. Japan Central League K/9 was 7.0 last year, which was indeed less than MLB (8.3) although the latter includes some pitcher batting, while the Central League uses the DH league-wide. Still, Mickolio's 5.8 was well below league average.
  2. Would still like to see more K's from Rosario, even if it mean throwing fewer innings, but he is definitely better in the pen this year than starting last year. I think Rosario's injury in 2014 will make him eligible for a fourth option year in 2019, but still, it would be nice to see some urgency in potentially getting near-future MLB contributions from someone among our bullpen prospects.
  3. I think he is still in that range. Seems unlikely that he finishes at .850 this year, based on components thus far. Just regressing his BABIP to .355 (which would still be a career high for him), which is simply taking away 4 singles from his 2017 line, and he'd be having a .798 OPS so far. Downgrade two triples to doubles (which would give him a career normal triples rate, and a career high double rate) and he'd be at .784.
  4. IBB are included in total walks, so it's not "2 more". It's actually 2 less "real" walks. Which is worth noting, because it cuts his 9.5% BB% down to 8.3%. Still a big improvement on 2016, although he was at 7.3% in 2015.
  5. Gordon is looking pretty good, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. He has a .391 BABIP this year, and his ISO bump is largely dependent on triples. His BB% is up, but his K% is too, and his SB are way down. He's still a solid prospect, no doubt, but I think it's early to suggest he's ascending to elite status.
  6. So there's some projection there too? Sounds like a nice prospect!
  7. Tommy Milone too. The Twins need a starter for Saturday, though...
  8. Mejia has already been announced to start Wednesday's game for Rochester. The "temporary inactive" thing is probably just a roster trick. They had to make room for Tonkin, and Mejia wasn't scheduled to pitch anyway. Rochester did a similar thing the other day when they technically moved Nik Turley to extended spring training for a day before they officially recalled Berrios. I imagine Mejia will somehow be officially "activated" again in time for his next start.
  9. Yeah, this was a bad slide. I have no problem with discouraging players from sliding like that. http://m.mlb.com/video/topic/63817564/v1383639883/chcstl-cubs-doubled-up-due-to-slide-violation/
  10. I don't have any problem with refining the rule and its application, although I don't think umpire discretion is the way to go. Umpire discretion usually leads to deferring to the players, sometimes to the detriment of the game (pace of play, strike zone, etc.). And of course, refining the rule and its application has nothing to do with Japan or the NFL either.
  11. I missed Meyer's start yesterday (Sunday May 14), but it was his best yet in MLB, possibly his best anywhere since Rochester in April 2016. A ground rule double and RBI single to start the game, then he didn't give up another hit until 1 out in the 6th inning. Only scattered 2 walks in that time too, out-dueling Verlander for the win. His final line: 6.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 7 K, 96 pitches (61 strikes)
  12. Ah yes, the "if it's not perfect, it's not worth doing" defense. The game will never be 100% safe, but I think it's better to have this rule than to not have it.
  13. Berrios is actually the 4th starter, so he's not getting skipped! He's already listed as the starter for Thursday's game.
  14. I do like this aspect of the 2017 season so far (except as a fan, off days are boring ). But this too is a factor of player performance. The 2017 Twins have a major drop-off in starter performance after their top 2-3 so far. This was not true of their starters in April 2016 or April 2015. And from 2012-2014, all of their early season starters were pretty mediocre, and the exceptions include guys like Correia in 2013 -- was there really any motivation to skip the 5th starter to get extra starts for Kevin Correia? Santana and Santiago easily outclass him. Also, in 2011-2012, our worst April starting pitcher was Liriano, who was an asset that was a lot harder to skip/demote than guys like Mejia and Tepesch.
  15. I don't know about this one either. Last year by this time, the Twins had used 20 different pitchers. This year, it's 19 counting Gimenez. Rogers, Meyer, and Berrios all made their 2016 debuts before the end of April, and Kintzler, Dean, and Graham were early May debuts last year too.
  16. TR cut Arcia last year, his first season out of options. Pinto was waived after his last option season. Tonkin wasn't cut last year, but he was actually doing pretty well when TR was fired. I don't think the new FO has been tested much in this regard either. Santana and Tonkin are about it, and the new FO had the benefit of a full season's results from last year to inform their evaluations.
  17. Tepesch can't come back for May 20, unless he is an injury replacement. Has to stay down for 10 days. Although I suppose Haley would probably be a decent real/phantom DL case.
  18. ESPN pretty much just extrapolates based on the current roster.
  19. Except we now have ~4 different ones parked on the 40-man roster. All of them having made only 0-1 appearances as Twins over the last 3 weeks.
  20. They'll need another starter on Saturday May 20 now, correct? Barring more rainouts. Tepesch wouldn't be eligible to return then, barring injury. Also barring injury, they would have to option/DFA someone to add back Gibson or Mejia. I realize I barred lots of things in that paragraph. Wilk is only logical candidate to drop, although I suppose they could start him instead. I feel bad planning his DFA when he hasn't even pitched for us yet. Although we would have been better off doing that with Tepesch too...
  21. Mind you, I am not criticizing the current FO (too much anyway ) when I note their similarities to the previous FO. Just an observation. If anything, I am ramping up to give more credit to TR...
  22. The MILB site listed Tepesch as being optioned in 2015, but they also have him simultaneously getting put on the MLB DL. It appears that option didn't count and he actually accrued a full season of MLB service time that year instead.
  23. FWIW, De Leon is back! On a rehab assignment anyway, pitched his first game last night. Obviously no guarantee of health going forward, but we could have some data coming in for him soon.
  24. But to me, those seem like the kinds of incremental changes any team might do. Even an "old school" one after a 103 loss season.
