  1. FWIW, by my calculations, Perkins reached exactly 10 years service time yesterday. 9 years 10 days coming into the year, yesterday was the 162nd day of the season, and 172 days equals a "year".
  2. Generally agreed, although they still felt like they needed yet another pitcher, and it looks like they are going to have to cut someone else to make that happen. Probably someone who would get cut after the season anyway, but still.
  3. If you add the words "moving to" before "the Twins" in that response, there is no accusation of anything. How much wording precision do you expect out of these quick chat comments? The context of the question was, is Littell's record interesting (i.e. meaningful)? And the answer is not really, and his post-trade performance took some of the potential wind out of those figurative sails.
  4. It's a fan message board, it is full of opinions by definition. Breslow has made 4 appearances with Cleveland, with an average score differential of 6.75 runs. He's an arm filling out expanded rosters too, with not much of a chance at making their playoff roster. I get this "it's not over until it's over" thing, but if Tonkin's Twins career was a ball game, his team is down 8 runs going into the final two innings. Nothing wrong with mentioning probability at that point, and not just possibility.
  5. Situational Hitting page: https://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/MLB/2017-situational-batting.shtml
  6. The primary implication is that Tonkin is out of chances with that poster, meaning he doesn't care to see Tonkin pitch for us again. But even from the front office's perspective, Tonkin is an arm with some experience who was going to be a minor league free agent in about a month. That's why he's back for expanded roster mop-up work. Hard to see that as any kind of meaningful "chance." I would be shocked if he stayed on the 40-man roster after the season.
  7. What do you call the last inning on Sunday? I don't think it's necessarily a "gimmick" to get a look at Moya in that situation rather than Tonkin again. Perkins might be the closest thing to a "gimmick" on the current roster, and Moya might take some of his innings, that's good.
  8. I don't know, getting those first couple appearances under one's belt is probably important. I don't necessarily say cut Bosses yet, but I had seen him enough to want to look at some alternatives too.
  9. Sleeper agent!
  10. Will be interesting to see if the Angels keep him on the 40-man this winter. Would be tempting to remove him, although I have no idea if they really need a spot. Probably not with their thin farm. If he stays on the 40-man, he would go on the 60-day DL next spring and get a full year MLB salary and service time while he recovers, so there is a little silver lining for Meyer.
  11. I don't think Moya necessarily will be better. But if he was going to be added to the roster anyway, might as well add him and give him a few low leverage innings to check him out. It would have beat putting all of our eggs in the Boshers basket for the first part of the month. (And Boshers seems like a decent candidate to be dropped from the roster in a month or two anyway.)
  12. I know they have pitched Turley a few times in relief, but I don't think they have used him in any meaningful role, as Seth suggested they may have been thinking on Sep. 1st.
  13. To be fair, I think they first wanted to hire Molitor back in his mid-40s.
  14. What did your gut tell you about the likelihood of Perkins, Boshers, or Turley contributing meaningfully out of the pen this month? My gut would have told me I better hedge those guys with Moya, since he was likely to be added by November anyway. They haven't even really tried Turley in that role yet, have they?
  15. If this guy deserves it now, he probably should have been up September 1st. Let's just hope he becomes our K-Rod.
  16. There is assumption that interest in upgrading our pen from the outside means big money mediocrity deal. It's not necessarily true. There are usually some interesting guys who are a step up from Breslow/Belisle. Trade is another avenue. And of course, sometimes there is a FA like Andrew Miller who is worth the risk of bigger money. Maybe nothing will come of it this winter, but I see no reason to close that avenue off now. We will have plenty of spots left for arms that want to step up. FWIW, Gee is a FA, and Hurlbut is a minor league FA. Neither should have any bearing on our 2018 pen plans. The fact that you would even bother to mention them tells me your pen plan is uncomfortably thin.
  17. That's about firing Molitor, though. Not a prohibition of "all Molitor discussions" as the poster said (or having "a long sit-down with him during the offseason to go over run-scoring matrixes, statistical probabilities and sacrifice bunting" as Nick said in the article).
  18. Sure, but I don't think the topics you mention required "getting to know" Molitor to engage in a meaningful way. "Hi Paul, nice to meet you. What do you think of the state of the team? Do you have any concerns? [Listen and respond to concerns.] Also, here are some data and tools that we provided Francona with in Cleveland, and they really helped him. Do you use anything like this now? If not, we'd love to try in 2017. We'll touch base with you throughout to season to see how it's going." If we're nearly a year into it, and he's still trying silly sac bunts in a pennant race, I'm not sure he's passing the "working closely in a collaborative manner" test that should contribute to the decision whether to re-up or not.
  19. I'm not saying they never had that conversation. Nick hopes that if the re-up with Molitor, they sit down with him and have that conversation this winter. I'm saying, they either had that conversation last winter and Molitor has not responded to it terribly well in 2017, in which case why would we re-up him and try the conversation again. Or they didn't have that conversation, in which case they I'm not sure why you'd re-up him before having the conversation.
  20. I'm not implying anything more than what Nick said in the article: "If the team re-ups with Molitor, I do hope that Falvey and Levine have a long sit-down with him during the offseason to go over run-scoring matrixes, statistical probabilities and sacrifice bunting." No reason they couldn't have sat down with him last offseason and done the same thing. (In fact, it doesn't really make sense not to do that last offseason. I'd want to see how he adjusts with that information before I had to make a decision on re-upping him.)
  21. A "sit down" isn't about firing him, it's about talking to him.
  22. Got it. I was looking at that page too, but thought there might be a quicker way.
  23. FWIW, the baserunner was eventually suspended by the league for 2 games.
  24. Interesting that both of the HR were to Jose Iglesias! Didn't remember that. The HR came in Hildenberger's 1st and 3rd PAs vs Iglesias, with a groundout in between. How much are those 2 HR swinging the data? That could be about ~.120 OPS points right there. Other XBH: Kinsler (1st of 2 PA) Abreu, Altuve, and Kevan Smith (2nd of 2 PA) 4 others (1st and only PA) All 4 of his BB came to "1st and only PA" guys too (3 in his first 3 MLB games). Where did you find this split/data?
