  1. Nathan was a reliever his last year with San Fran...pitched 78 innings, had an ERA under 3.00, had more Ks than IP and had a WHIP a hair over 1.000. The Twins got him and made them their closer, but it's not like there were no signs he'd excel doing that based on what he had already done
  2. Couldn't agree more with this post.
  3. If you listen to the podcast, Aaron was dismissing the Twins' division titles pretty casually. From 2008 on, I'd agree that the AL Central has been pretty miserable. Before that, though? No, there were worse divisions in baseball, especially the NL West, where the Padres won the division in 2005 by winning a mighty 82 (!) games. John brought up some points I've been saying about the Rays for a few years now. Their current success was largely built on the backs of several top three drafts. Now that they've spent five years near the top, they're running out of those top draft picks as they bleed off to free agency. The true test of that front office is happening now. Can they continue to be a 90 win team when picking in the bottom ten of every draft? It's something the Twins found they couldn't do after having bottom 15 picks for most of a decade. I'm not knocking the Rays, I think they're one of the better franchises in baseball but it's a lot easier to win when you have a half dozen top five picks on your roster. Pitt and KC have had the same thing going for them...they haven't been able to replicate TB's success and Pitt and KC didn't have to play in the AL East either. Additionally, those TB teams aren't exactly loaded with talent either...not positional talent anyway. What TB managed to do was focus on pitching.
  4. 2006 was the only time I can remember where the AL Central was a top division. We've had division winner with less than 90 wins in three of the last five seasons. This year we had two teams with a winning record. In 2011, we had one team with a winning record, In 2010 we had two. In fact, since the end of 2006, we've only had two or less teams with a winning record. One team getting hot in the playoffs doesn't make a division very good...
  5. How many teams have so many glaring problems to fix with no immediate help in sight from the farm system? Are there teams needing 4 starting pitchers, a shortstop a 2B and a 3B?
  6. It's what we do
  7. Appreciate that Johnny :-)
  8. KLaw isn't with a MLB team because he resigned from the Blue Jays to go to ESPN and he stays there cause he can spend more time with his family by working there. He is very well respected in his field...
  9. He says what he means and he's unapologetic about it. I like people like that. He stands by what he thinks and he backs up what he says. I like that too. This world has gotten way too touchy feely in general, worrying so much about hurting other people's feelings. Understand I'm not talking about hurting feelings just to hurt feelings...that's not cool. Not only that, people seem to think everything is an opinion, and that's not true. There are times, when people are right and people are wrong. Period. He'll point that out too. I like him. He's a bit harsh, but that's okay.
  10. Yep...and yep...
  11. Didi was drafted out of high school, Dozier went to college. Dozier spent less time in the minors before getting called up. Didi also didn't show the ability to get on base past AA Didi was signed as an international free agent from the Netherlands. Arguing that Dozier spent less time in the minors is, at best, a canard. Dozier spent 4 years playing in college then spent the next 3+ years in the minors before making the majors at 25. While neither has dominated the upper levels of the minors, Didi has managed to beat Dozier to those levels by three years. Also, unlike Dozier, he is good defensively. No one should suggest that Dozier is a better option. You mentioned their age for when they reached the majors as to why one was better than the other...and my point was, they were drafted/signed at different ages so JUST looking at age for when they made the majors makes no sense since one was drafted/signed at 18 and one was drafted after 4 years in college. Of course Dozier was in rookie ball at 22. When he was drafted, he was 22. His first year in the minors, he was 22. Heck, only 3 years in the minors for a position player to make the majors is grease lightning for the Twins...
  12. When asked about whether or not it was crazy for Arizona to want to trade Bauer, KLaw wrote: ' It is crazy and goes back to the D-backs souring on Upton for similar reasons. Bauer is 21. If you're concerned that he's immature, you probably should spend more time around 21-year-old men so that you realize that they're pretty much all immature.
  13. In his latest chat, he says Hicks and Arcia aren't ready for the majors to start this season and that he figures Rosario will end up in CF. He's also a Max Kepler believer. Doesn't think he'll be a star but will be an every day player.

  15. Absolutely ridiculous. I'm gonna laugh at the team that does that...he's a good pitcher, but not worth THAT kind of money
  16. Or have 2 years and 440 innings of very good pitching, then throw him a qualifying offer at the end... Or just resign him...like right away... What would Shield's motivation to do that be? just so he can give you a discount in exchange for years he would probably be health through, given his history? It would be worth attempting to do, no? Obviously it takes two sides, but my point was, we shouldn't trade for him without trying hard to keep him longer than 2 years...
  17. I wonder how many times that's happened...since teams went to five man rotations...where a guy won 20 or more games and had an ERA close to 5 (I'd say close would be 4.76 or higher (close to 5 than 4.5)
  18. Or have 2 years and 440 innings of very good pitching, then throw him a qualifying offer at the end... Or just resign him...like right away...
  19. Nice article, lot of good points, but I don't think Revere would improve our defense in CF over Span...I also don't believe the team will use the saved money after trading him, assuming there is any saved money, on pitching. We knocked 18M off the 2011 payroll for 2012 and didn't address pitching...
  20. Probably doesn't matter much, but Minneapolis is closer to Florence, AL than Denver is...
  21. And he won't work anywhere near the same amount of innings while doing it.. and IP is a factor...we know the more innings the starter can go while being effective (as Shields has shown he can do), it helps the bullpen and we don't know how the ERA would balloon up (or not) for Marcum if he got his innings jacked up to match Shields'. And Shields has pitched in a much tougher division. But if you want to believe Marcum is every bit the pitcher Shields is, fine...I believe most would disagree
  22. 'Kelly Johnson is going to pitch AND play 2nd base? Now that's what I call value! That rotation makes me a little nauseated by the way. ' That Johnson in the rotation is the one from Miami...Josh Johnson. It's stated in move #2. Reading is fundamental
  23. Did I read that right? Marcum and Grienke are better than Shields? Well, I'd consider Greinke better than Shields (though not by much and you can make an argument for Shields). Marcum, not so much. Marcum is not even close...Grienke is comparable, but he's gonna cost a lot more....and I'd personally still take Shields first.
  24. Did I read that right? Marcum and Grienke are better than Shields? Check out their career ERAs and ERA+. Marcum and Greinke are both better. You may want to look at some stats sometime. They are really nice. I'd rather look at what they've done recently and the competition they face on a regular basis. I'll also look at WHIP and, even more importantly, the INNINGS they've pitched to get those ERAs you mentioned. Shields has gone over 200 innings 6 straight years. Marcum got over 200 once...and just barely. Marcum doesn't come close to Shields, Grienke is much closer, though not quite the workhorse. Thanks for the telling me to look at stats though...
  25. Did I read that right? Marcum and Grienke are better than Shields?
