  1. It was nice to meet a couple fellow TD'ers yesterday, and it was the coldest morning this winter. As nocrying noted, they didn't take bp yesterday because of the weather. I expected no action today, being the last saturday off for these guys for months, but had to go over anyway. Yesterday they moved into the stadium clubhouse (those with invites) but I parked in my usual spot near the minor league fields and was talking with a couple of friends when we were told Mike Pelfrey was in the parking lot there talking with some peeps. So the three of us went over and visited with him and I knocked off another signature on the bat. He's really, really a nice guy. Then back to where we were, as no one was on any of the fields. Standing there visiting when two players walked the sidewalk of broken dreams from the stadium down past us to the fields. Dozier and Escubar, and they signed for whoever wanted something and continued on. Then came Plouffe and Arcia, then Shaffer and Hicks, then Fryer and Bernier. Joe Vavra walked by. It ended up with quite a few down here, they took infield drills and they bp with Vavra throwing. Arcia really blasted some way over into the high school. The new firstbase coach came down, Butch Davis?. So it ended up being an excellent moring to be here, and with very few fans, as the Sox finally opened their gates today. Tommorrow is pitchers and catchers reporting date, and the ribbon cutting for the stadium. Half price food and drinks, players appearances, self guided tours and the gift shop opening. It should be fun!
  2. Jose did show up at Hammond today.
  3. Seth, you shouldn't need a gas mask, as Pelfrey wore today, as it has to warm up by then. Cold out here this morning with winds strong enough to blow over the recycling bins. Going into the 30's tonight so tommorrow will be colder yet. But back to 80 on sunday. Arcia ran on Perry's Hill this morning. Mauer spotted yesterday, but stayed away from this end. Vargas has gone home til next wednesday. The luckiest man in the world hasn't taken bp on the fields yet and keeps his distance from the onlookers. No sign of Dozier yet.
  4. I think Sano shakes the rust by May 1st. My dislike for the luckiest man in the world remains strong and I'd like him gone last year, but for sure by July and watch Sano the rest of the year, good or bad.
  5. Sure, give me a heads up and we'll plan on meeting somewhere.
  6. Mauer is a lock. I''m on the side of to few rather than to many. Keep it tight.
  7. New faces today at the park included Ervin Santana, Tervor Plouffe and Oswaldo Arcia, though none took the fields. I decided to try to get a team bat signed and knocked off 3 more today with Tommy Milone, Caleb Thielbar and new skipper Paul Molitor signing it. The major league roster hits on one field and the minors hit on another, and Molly watched intently as Vargas, Hicks and Sano took their turns. Vargas hit on to left that landed on the roof of the Medical building way beyond the right field fence. Sano hit the road a couple times. Yesterday some old guy with NY on his pants walked right into the bullpen when Perkins was throwing. Nice going, easterner, as now we are locked out of that area. Talked with a friend who works in the gift shop and she's about in a panic. These construction workers should have been done the 1st, and still haven't finished. She said the gift shop floor is a disaster, the they've had to put a new door on 5 different times and can't get it right. The Twins wanted Mortenson to get the contract, but Lee County nixed it, keeping the work local, so it's mostly spanish speaking construction workers doing their thing.
  8. On the back fields, good question. They start games 4 days after reporting, so not much time to get ready. They have yet to use the field next to the stadium. That one and the adjoining field will probably be used for all invited, and the back two for the minors.
  9. They start just before 9. Of course they're here earlier doing whatever they do in the clubhouse. It's still informal, so some show up later. But it's really pretty formal, as the coaches seem to have the drills and all down to a time.
  10. Leave it it a TD'er to have the info!
  11. Presidents Day today, so alot of kids at the ballpark, along with many more adults. Seems everyone wants autographs or photo's taken with the players. It'll get worse from here on out, although the Sox will finally open their gates on saturday so we'll lose some east coasters. New today were Sano, Jorge Polanco, Eduardo Escobar and Tommy Milone. Vargas works hard and after batting practice goes to Perry's Hill and runs there most everyday. He got alot of ooh's and ahh's today by launching some very long balls over the fences. He's a treat to watch take bp. Ruesse told me we lost a prospect, must of been in the Dominican, as he was swimming and got hit in the head by a prop of a boat.
  12. The first line on the Super Bowl had Seattle minus 3. That only lasted for hours and the line dropped to even and stayed there. Big money drove that line down in no time.
  13. Chief, are you sure that's how it works? I haven't had a bookie in a long time, but it was if you bet 1000, that's your bet. If you lose, it costs the 10% juice, so you lose 1100. If you win, you get 1000.
  14. Chi - Yes I was there, but wouldn't you know it, I was over the right field fence at the time. Those guys hit in the second group and I was sure Vargas would launch a few far enough to fetch. Not to be today, but he did send one out right handed toward the high school which I picked up on the way back. So all was not lost. Nice hat! Nothing cheap in there now though, but the stuff sells.
  15. So now I'm called a civilian, lol. Actually I told Ruesse that Hunter was here and Hicks. He wanted to know where and I pointed out Hunter in right, in the white, and Hicks in center, in the red. Then I told him it took Torii all of 3 minutes to start giving tips, the first to Fryer, and then Vargas, which continued into the outfield and then in the dugout, the day before. Ruesse doesn't take notes from civilians though. I was still standing with Ruesse when they came in, and had earlier told Ruesse that Hicks had bulked up, upper body. So Ruesse says something and Torii spontaneously responded with the "steriods" and that he was going to call the CDC or something, laughing. It was just that quick, Torii being Torii. My thinking is he'll lighten up the clubhouse and put some life back into this team. It's about time someone did, and who better at it than Torii. They been sleepwalking for a few year. I don't understand three pages of comments already, and some of the comments against it.
  16. No access to the stadium til the 22nd. The ticket office is open and a small gift shop next to it is all. Some people have just walked in and looked though, they tell me. I'm staying away. All the action is down the street.
  17. I really don't see any sense in ranking them, they're all in the organization so who cares. I'll pull for and follow all three. In the end though I see Stewart having the longest and best career.
  18. Wed morning at the park. A few more guys showed up today. Mark Hamberger threw off the mound. AJ Achter is here. So is a beefed up Aaron Hicks. Looks like he added some upper body muscle. Torii joked it was from steroids. Bp took place on a couple of fields today. As usual Vargas cleared the fence the most with Hicks losing a few balls also. Supposed to be a high in the 60's for the week, perfect in my book. Max Kepler and Thorpe are also here now.
  19. Thanks for the post. Sorry for your loss, the memories will live on forever.
  20. Hughes and Vargas. Both have big years.
  21. When I get there around 9 they are already working out, but it lasts til around 11:30, with batting practice the last thing before they take a lunch break. Maybe see you over there!
  22. The photo was of the second group to take bp. I noticed how Harrison only uses his upper body and it's all arms. Was told he's ok though. The first group was Fryer, Vargas, Hermann and Hunter. It took Torii all of about 3 minutes to start giving advice, first to Fryer, and then he worked with Vargas alot. Mostly about his cocked position and holding it, not getting out in front of the ball. He continued to show him things when the took the outfield. Torii will be worth his weight in gold just for the help he'll give to others and the tickets that will sell to come see him. About 30 people out here this morning as the word of Hunter being here brings them out of the woodwork. Next week there'll be hundreds. And Torii will be the main attraction as people say "Joe who?".
  23. Monday, Feb 9th. Nice sunshine this morning but it quickly clouded up as I went to the park. I wonder what time they start now, must be way before 9. Roserio and that bunch were working on Perry's Hill, about 15 pitchers working on fielding drills on the half diamond, another group out in the outfield on Field 3, and some pitchers thowing on 1, and then going over towards 3. Then the rains came and everyone headed inside and things were cut short today. Some were hitting in the cages. When there's a Bentley around with Texas plates, you know who's here. I got wind of Tommy Watkins and Torii headed for the dorms, so headed that way with a couple of friends who had stuck around. Sure 'nuff, out they came. Torii was catching up with old grounds crew friends he hadn't seen since here and then we greeted him. The guys always got this big ol' infectous smile! So we chatted a bit, and he signed a few things. Luckily I had a ball in my pocket. Gosh, he either grew a few inches since I last saw him, or I've shrunk a bit. One gal with us didn't have anything to sign, (she gets stuff for a gal who's got ALS and uses it for charity auctions) so she mentioned that to him and asked if there was anything he could tell her. Torii said something to the effect "Just trust in God", that's all I can say. I have no idea how Torii will do this year, but it's just nice to have him around, and it was so nice seeing him here again. Oh, J.R. Graham did throw a pen by us, and Alex Meyer threw one in the pen between fields 1 and 2.
  24. Parker, it's free I've been told by several. Jokin - not much here for catchers yet. I'll go tommorrow for awhile, got a meeting at noon, but should be 40 guys or more here in the morning.
  25. I don't think Meyer should get anywhere near the pen. He's a starter all the way, keep him that way. I can see Nolasco getting 5 or 6 starts and the door hitting him in the ass as Meyer boards a plane. I want to see at least 20 starts from Meyer this year and 30 next.
