    After the second demotion I expected/hoped Buxton would finish with an OPS in the 5s. Very nice way to wrap up the season and hope for next year. God this team needs him.

    No, it would have been speculative. But, hardly surprising with all the M&A going on that they did materialize.

    I'm sure you're right but intangibles like the brand value count for something and you wouldn't have had to hold until an actual sale of the company. Just rumors of a sale were enough to cause the price to spike.

    Speaking of short-term play- should have bought into TWTR last spring. Damn I knew they seemed to cheap to stay down there. Should have pulled the trigger. Oh well.

    The VW CEO Martin Winterkorn stepped down after the diesel cheating. I bought in last August when it tanked, sold half but kept the other half. Lots of upside remaining IMO. They're going to move hard into EVs and I think that might allow them to get around some of the fees. Even if they have to pay them I think they'll do okay. I'm staying away from banks. I just don't see where they'll have the margins for a few years yet. But if you want to get into financials I'd look at medium sized regionals like FRC.

    Pedro Martinez did a really simple presentation on the different fastballs Colon throws on a MLB network bit. The grips were not quite the same but he emphasized how different finger pressures upon release get different ball movements.

    None of those veteran signings costed a top ten pick. The thing about losing a lot and never trading prospects is that they stockpiled a bunch of prospects and are about to get 1-1. So the situation is very different now and moves that might have been appropriate then don't necessarily make sense now.

    RCP has a Rasmussen poll for the 9/26-9/28 period up. Looks like Clinton gained 6 pts from the same poll last week, although it is right on the MOE.

    Anyways, to the point of the thread, 5 years seems like a long time to give him IMO. Obviously he has done a good job so far but the game can change fast.

    The Twins have been in a de facto rebuild since they started drafting in the top 10 5 years ago. A half assed one maybe, but the farm is a top ranked one. They should not be tearing down to the studs as per a multi-year rebuild at this point.

    Holding is probably the right call but as I'm sure you're aware, if we get another risk-off period like last Jan-Feb stocks like AMZN/NFLX/TSLA and others are going to have an outsided drop compared to the SPX. Most of those stocks took a ~15-25% hit greater than the rest of the market, although they rebounded as good or better in some cases. Personally I would keep a close eye on the Deutche Bank business. Some people think there is a real chance of them going under.

    Gladden has been going on about pitching up and in a lot lately. In his opinion Twins pitchers have been too focused on the outside corner, because they can't pitch inside "effectively." I don't know if there's anything to it but its an interesting take.

    The low point for Trump was and continues to be the fact that he won't release his tax returns. Part of his whole schtick is wearing the corporate mongol identity with pride. The fact that he wants to hide whatever is (or isn't) in his tax history suggests it must be huuuge.

    Trump won that debate IMO. He plays the insider / outsider angle so well. Every time Clinton repeated some rehearsed talking point, which was often, Clinton just looked like more of a politician. That level of preparation and methodical, wordy speech just doesn't appeal to people these days, I suspect. Will be curious to see if the polls change in a few days.

    Those tweets are incredibly common though. Jesus, are you on facebook? That is like half of America. An opportunity was there to talk about the ignorance behind it instead of fleeing from it.

    The danger is papering over racist thoughts with meaningless apologies like we do every time someone says something honest. The video above is a perfect microcosm of this. What does Bayless do? Distances himself. Call him a racist (truly he called Riley Cooper a racist, but he was implying the same about Clevenger). He said "AGAIN I'm ashamed to share the same skin color as this man." Give me a ****ing break. Shannon, in a long-winded and roundabout way, addresses the thought behind the text. He confronts it. At no point does he call Clevenger a racist. Black people don't throw that label around near as lightly as white people do. White folks who care about advancing racial causes really, really need to get on the same page and stop with the phony treating people who speak an honest racial thought like they're radioactive.

    More proof that the "racist" label has become so toxic that it completely shuts down any actual discussion. Yes what Clevenger said was racist and boneheaded but my god; its also an incredibly common tone and viewpoint in America. And the MLB reacts by suspending without pay? Hell AP got paid during his suspension. I guess being a child abuser is not as bad as being a boneheaded dope on twitter.

    Improving from a .360 team to a .500 team in 2017 is a very fair goal. They stand to gain 8-10 wins just by having normal sequencing "luck" and cleaning up the defense / fundamentals. That leaves 14-15 wins to get to .500. And if they're going to make a push in 2018, they will need season ticket sales to recover, and that will require improvements in the W-L next year.

    Agree with your overall point but owing to the fact that FP is one of the few stats we have for minor leaguers, what alternative do you suggest? I'd suggest we can glean something from FP by weighing FP against RF/9, for the reason you hint at above- because it gives a clue as to the difficulty of the average play resulting from the range/athleticism of the fielder. Greater range => more difficult plays. Dozier, for exmaple, had fairly strong RF/9 and FP% at SS. So did Plouffe. Suggesting decent conversion of plays that were a high average difficulty. Both were moved off the position after reaching the majors. Polanco's RF/9 and FP% are both lower AND he was moved off SS earlier (AAA).
