  1. I watched Hernandez's 7/18 start in Fenway. His "slider" is a glorified cutter with no depth. He struggles to get his changeup over for strikes, and his fastball at 88-91 (4 seam) is meatball for righthanders. Why the FO would trade for a fly ball lefthander when TF favors righthanders already, is curious to me. At least Liriano had a reasonable HR/FB rate and was lights out against lefthanders. Hernandez gave up a bushel of hits to lefthanders with his "slider" and was destroyed several times by righthanders including a gigantic Cody Ross HR that left Fenway. Top it off, he kept his first pitch of the game, not first strikeout or out (ended up giving up a double to Ellsbury), suggesting a superstitious/crazy head.

  3. Rywan said he wanted pitchers in the high minors who are "ready to go."
  4. Simma da'own, P.C. Brigadier, I have 4 times the post you have thus I am 4 times the authority on (fried chicken? let's face it - true) racial stereotypes (I'm white, and I like fried chicken, too FYI) Until you make one more post anyway (do it, do it, do it, do it, 1, 2, 3, now, do it, 1, 2, 3
  5. My moneys would be on Frankie for the strikeout, because in Delmon's mind, home plate encompasses the square footage of a small KFC drive through.
  6. Yesterday was a prime example: Mauer slicing two hits over the middle infielders heads - to be driven in by Morneau and Willingham home runs. Good, winning production from a catcher, certainly, but not the main events. edit: On second thought, there are more times Mauer does the same, and Morneau and Willingham fizzle. His value is much less immediate, but it is still impactful. I have to redact previous comment: Mauer is having a MVP-discussion season by any measure, but it would be improved by catching more. edit 2: I don't want Mauer to catch more.
  7. Who should start instead?
  8. Evidently, when Nicky Blackburn was tearing up AAA, it was because he and Bobby Cuellar revisited video of his glory days of 08-09. It would seem to be a worthwhile formula when a player struggles. I suspect at the MLB level, coaches try to "adapt" and outsmart too much rather than just sticking to what has worked in the past.
  9. The Tigers and Pirates, would beg to differ
  10. Its also St. Jewish Park, not as so commonly mispelled, St. Louis Park
  11. The former trade idea is consistent with win-now, the latter, with win-later. If you have better ideas to float, than do. I think like some others-including prospective buyers ("pricey," "More pricey," "Made me laugh") that people over-value the Twins trade chips as the current CBA and contract situations stand. Thus I propose sign and trades wherever possible. A win-now trade for Upton could easily synergize with a return to form by Baker, Pavano, Gibson, Liriano and, combined with healthy seasons from key players (mauer, Willingham) could push this club back into the ALC lead. The worst would be for returning players to outperform expectations, and the FO stayed away contributors by being close-minded before the 2012 trade deadline. 2013 could look very different from 2011-2012, if the cards fall right. If the cards are wrong, then a firesale now would maximize returns for when a return to form is ripe - 2015-2016 most likely. One or the other, that is what I would like to know about. Since so much boom-or-bust depends on a few key players - Liriano, Baker, Gibson, Mauer, Morneau, Plouffe, esp. None are sure things, but all have high upside. If things break half/half, then we are like the White Sox cca. 2011-2012 - finishing just outside of contention. Something the Pohlads would certainly prefer to a firesale. Thus I am inquiring to those who want a firesale - what exactly should we do?
  12. Is that a pun - "Ya know" for the Minnesota team? What am I missing. On the lousy Chi series / trade dealine, a groaner pun might go something like *Trade bait Liriano dives under cover of Lake Michigan lillipad from interested Orioles, in latest start."
  13. Willingham is signed for 2 more years, Morneau for one. Yet the Orioles are said to have interest in Greinke (Free Agent), and with Liriano (Free Agent). What, do you suspect, would/did the Orioles have offered for Greinke? So, if not the package above, then I think the biggest haul for either pitcher would be to sign and shop. No more money spent by the seller and a bigger haul on trade return.
  14. Yes his "peripherals" ERA and WHIP, maybe. His xFIP since 2010 is identical to Jared Weaver's. His K-rate is higher than Sabathia, Weaver, Hanson, Shields, Anibal Sanchez, Madison Bumgarner... His SIERA better than Cain, Garza, Marcum, Dempster, Wandy, Gio, Dickey...
  15. Twins send: Willingham, Morneau, $20m Orioles send: Dylan Bundy Willingham would be a huge upgrade in LF and Morneau could thrive against RHP in Yankee stadium and other ALE parks. I watched the O's game yesterday and saw a stat: O's are something like 47-5 when hitting 2+ HRs. O's are, purportedly, shopping for "high obp guys" but they have lived and died with the HR. Would this be enough, or too much, to get Bundy?
  16. The Twins will have a hard time selling those outfield seats next year if they don't have at least 1 guy who can hit the ball out there once in a while. Willingham stays.
  17. The Pohlads would lose a ton of cash in this deal immediately and next year and the next year, and more yet if those prospects don't pan out.
  18. Too much Coomer, not enough TK.
  19. Can Martinez field his own coaching staff?
  20. If by edge he means Johan Santana, Brad Radke, Eric Milton, and Kyle Lohse, then yes. Players no we have no pitching as much as fans know. Heck, who wouldn't feel defeated already knowing Nicky Blackburn is your starter in the launching pad known as US Cell Field? I don't excuse it but the effort yesterday was explicable anyway.
  21. Who, then, should replace Gardy? I echo the chorus only if the replacement isn't another old fashioned thinker ie. Francona. For starters, a replacement should at least use shifts. 4-5+ free wins right there.
  22. 1. Savings 2. Fills leadoff spot against RH and LH 3. improves outfield defense to compensate for Kubel 4. platoon / PH Parra & Young
  23. Justin Upton is having a bad season, hitting just .335 wOBA as a corner outfielder. He is owed 38.5m over seasons 2013-2015. He has righthanded pull power. http://www.hittrackeronline.com/detail2.php?id=2012_2027&type=hitter Denard Span is hitting .320 wOBA, is owed 11.25m over seasons 13-14 with a 9m team option for 2015. He plays premium defense in CF and would be a much better leadoff than Willie Bloomquist. Discuss.
  24. If the elbow is finally fixed then Baker is worth $9m
