1. Doumit's been solid but carrying 3 catchers is not ideal. Better to go with 2 catchers and use a lefthanded Thome type to 1B/DH and hit for a .100-.200 surplus OPS in a platoon role. And then roll with another bullpen arm. Morneau should prbably be that guy but the org. and/or Gardy seems to like him at 1B everyday for some reason. Hopefully this year's sub .600 OPS against LHP has sunk in. Clearly Morneau has found acceptance with ongoing concussion symptoms which have killed his effectiveness against LHP.
2. Also the Scott Diamond Pitchout, Ejection award. The pitcher(s) who fail to bean an opposing hitter shall be awarded a box of air. As a bonus, the award also doubles as an aquarium
3. There should be an award for that too. The Michael Cuddyer dislocated index finger. Like this, but bronze
4. Only complaint is, it seems we have to keep our star running back on the field for 4th quarter mop up duty now. Defense has been pleasant surprise. Offense is boring but doesn't cough up the ball. Might have a chip chair and a chance
5. The LNP Dirty Uniform. The unwashed uniform of LNP presented every year to the player that makes the most unnecessary diving plays.
6. Heck, Gomez is a 3 WAR player this year
7. To even get the ball rolling we'd have to float Perkins, then a bunch more on top of that. Even after his slump Trumbo has put up a great year, he wouldn't come cheap.
8. I'm not going to question why. I only hope that $3m gets recycled into something useful next year.
9. I'd sooner fault the TWins for letting Crain walk. He clicked while he was still a Twin.
10. Who would have guessed the guy with a .412 BABIP in 2010 would regress so hard.
11. Prediction - the Twins will sign a FA pitcher named Matt Capps
12. It will be interesting to see how the market reacts. Even with LAA out, I have to think one of Bos/NYY/TX will pursue
13. Realistic names? Henderson Alvarez (TOR) Jeremy Guthrie (Bal) Jake Westbrook (StL) Lucas Harrell (Hou) Wandy Rodriguez (Pit)
14. Article here: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/joe-mauers-un-joe-mauer-like-afternoon/
15. What I've heard/read from Cooper is that he was working with Liriano to a. stand taller, and b. not pause at his balance point. Wow, brilliant insight there Coop. Clearly Liriano is just not getting it.
16. BA is useful if you want to know a very specific thing: How efficiently a hitter reaches 1b not including walks. Worthless, not necessarily. Just sort of boring imho and not a very good snapshot type stat anymore. Anyone who wins the batting title most likely had a good season, but it doesn't say if it was '04 Ichiro-good or '04 Bonds good, or where in between. There's a lot of room in between.
17. Doumit catching Deduno. I put the over/under on past balls at 3. Any takers?
18. I'm pulling for the Os, but I worry that their 1-run game record, and 16 consecutive extra inning victories is all building for a collapse in the play in game.
19. At least Hawk knows the players names.
20. Willingham's top 3 clutchest games. 3. Apr 20 @ TBR. Top 7, 2 out, bases loaded, 1-2 count. Joel Peralta pitching. Twins down 2-4. Willingham doubles to clear the bases. His only hit of the day. + WPA .42 2. June 24, @ Cin. Top 7, 0 out, Mauer on 1st. Score 1-1. Willingham doubles Mauer to 3rd. +WPA .17 on the play. Then in the ninth, against Chapman, Twins down 2-3, Span on 2nd, 3-1 count. Willingham hits a home run. +WPA .59 for the play and +.71 on the day. 1. May 29 vs. Oak. Bottom of 9th, 2 out, Carrol on 3rd, Mauer on 1st, Twins down 0-2. Willingham homers off a 1-0 Fuentes pitch to win the game. +.91 WPA on the play, and .91 for the day.
21. I would rather listen to any local crew including Hawk/Steve Stone than a TBS Fox or ESPN squad. Since Jon Miller went back to radio, it is totally unbearable across teh board. Worst broadcasting of the year is during the playoffs.
22. Speaking of stories, here are a few from Posnanski. The 10 clutchest performances of all time, as defined by WPA http://joeposnanski.blogspot.com/2011/08/statistics-and-stories.html
23. Well we do have 1300 minor league PAs which suggest that Trout's performance in recent days wouldn't drag him out of the conversation were he to play 21 extra games. He is still providing positive offensive and defensive value even while slumping. That said, Gleeman is right - the award is handed out by 28 Souhan-type writers across the country so bfd who gets it.
