  1. Really hope May goes toe to toe with Sale today. Gotta think that would be a huge confidence boost.
  2. I don't buy that for a second. I know there is a lot of randomness in sports, but the draft is just one way to acquire talent. The A's, Cards, and Giants have avoided long stretches in the gutter by mixing it up. The A's made a play internationally and through trade. The Cards through internationals and trade. The Giants through free agency and trade. The draft is a big part, but its not everything. The Twins have done far too little trading for my taste. They could be leveraging their financial flexibility into a growth strategy but instead they seem content to let these signings play their contracts out to term (or near to it), and even double down sometimes (Doumit, Suzuki, Hughes).
  3. He tripled off a 30 year old career minor leaguer that's sporting a 1:1 K/BB ratio. He should be crushing guys like that. I mean ideally he hits around 1.000 like Arcia did in both of his demotions before they recall him. Its not like Arcia doesn't have a weak side too.
  4. Yeah I would have sympathy for him at 15 but at 52? If you haven't come out by then that is not good. He seemed grateful anyway.
  5. Bumgarner threw a beautiful backdoor slider on 1-1. Guerrero's reaction was to turn square at the umpire, observe the strike call, and then react by doing a lap around the dirt. Obviously not happy with the call. That's a pitch Bumgarner needs to be successful. What he does not need is some upstart with no track record intimidating or making an impression on an umpire, possibly causing him to hesitate next time Bumgarner makes that pitch. I don't think Bumgarner cared at all about him spinning around. The popup provided an opportunity to make an impression in front of everyone, including the umpire, and remind them that he is the World Series MVP. If you think these mind games are silly then consider this. Baseball Prospectus adjusts its catcher framing stats for pitcher and batter because some pitchers get calls more than others, and likewise with batters. So players aren't just competing over one at-bat, they're waging a longer war over the definition of the strike zone itself within the umpire's mind. It just looks slightly childish when these battles flare up if you don't realize or believe its going on.. Here's the plot of the AB. http://i.imgur.com/OEsAT4x.png That's a pitch Bumgarner needs.
  6. DSP should tell Terry's scouts about lasik. I heard they get a free eye exam.
  7. As Sickels said in the link above, if he were 6'3" he'd be in contention for 1-1. McDaniels likes him too. In his words "I’m the high guy on Fulmer, but I think teams are coming around on him. There’s some effort to the delivery, but he’s never been hurt, goes deep in games, has succeeded hugely as a starter and reliever at the highest amateur levels, is hyper-aggressive and strong-bodied. . .. If I’m betting on someone in this draft class to succeed more than the industry consensus, I’m rolling with the dude that’s never failed before, that’s never been hurt before, that has has plus stuff and that has performed everywhere, delivery and height be damned."
  8. It is an unorthodox delivery though. I think the near-absence of a rock makes it look more rushed than it is (skip to 2:25 for slo-mo)
  9. I'm glad someone brought up Fullmer. I'm just starting to get up to speed and in digging around about Buehler, I noticed that he's not even the best pitcher on the Commodores. Fulmer might be a converted reliever but by any statistical measure he is the more productive starter this year. He even throws 1 more IP per start than Buehler (almost).
  10. Its not just that you'll be paying higher AAV if you wait, and Plouffe stays a good player. Its that you'll pay higher AAV for more years and for declining production. Pay him now or down't pay him at all. Waiting and then paying him is the worst option.
  11. Escobar vs. RHP: .229/.280/.315, 4 HR / 592 PA. Arcia vs. LHP: .224/.263/.338 - 6 HR / 278 PA. Vargas vs all: .251/.298/.410 - 10 HR / 295 PA.
  12. Escobar put the ball in play and what good did it do? I think with 2 outs you want a player who keeps the ball out of play.
  13. Are you saying the verdict is still out on Plouffe?
  14. There were two outs in the 8th, trailing one. The baserunner was Suzuki, ie. slow. At that point I think you try and shortcut to winning the game than putting together a sequential 2 out rally with no room for an out, no?
  15. Wait til Sano reaches the majors, then get creative with playing out of position. #Twinsbaseball
  16. And then in the 9th, Schafer on 1st, no out, Santana batting, righthander on the mound (closer). He sacrifices Schafer to 2nd? That's hardly leveraging your speedster. Schafer is fast enough to either straight steal, or score from 1st outright on a base hit deep enough to the outfield. Another option - PH for Santana and try to win the game via HR (move Esco to SS and sub Arcia in LF if necessary). The last thing you do is give away an out in that spot, IMO.
  17. Bottom of 8th, Twins down 5-4, 2 outs, 1 runner on. righthander on the mound Robinson due up. The winning run. Arcia, Vargas, Escobar on the bench and Molitor selects... Escobar to PH?
  18. I think this is a good point. The Twins have pounded a lot of square pegs into round holes defensively lately. Perhaps a better approach would be to trade for players who actually fit the position.
  19. I'd look at it, definitely. He seems to have turned a corner. I don't know where people get this idea that he can play all over the field though.
  20. There are now two reasons to move Pinto out from behind the dish in my view. One, he is a post-concussion guy. The Twins should be familiar with the risks of that by now. Two, if he is not a competent catcher after 9+ y ears of professional coaching, maybe he'll never be a competent catcher? And further, every day spent "developing" his catcher skills comes at the expense of what remains of his youth. If that means he is only a late inning RH bench option, fine. But let's get something out of him before he's eligible for AARP discounts.
  21. Not to diminish the wins but that M's team we just played looked surprisingly mediocre IMO. Now watch as they go on a 25-6 streak or something.
  22. Suzuki: .204/.291/.327 1/12 CS 1 PB, 8 "WPs" staff ERA: 4.33 (25th) Pinto's PT does not need to come at the expense of Vargas.
  23. He hasn't been a switch hitter all his life. He started in high school, and by Hicks own admission he never developed the same confidence batting lefty. IMO the Twins overvalue switch hitting. Only a tiny portion of switch-hitters won't have a dominant side, and Hicks' is clearly his right side. Why not let him give righty-righty a real shot instead of trying to jam this failed approach down his throat and wind up platooning him on the wrong side of a platoon? He wants to bat righty-righty, let him try it out in the minor leagues and see if he can't improve on his paltry production against RHPs.
