  1. I would also like to have read a fact about how many shooters actually sought help and were in the system in the first place. I'm reluctant to say the system even needs to be fixed until that's established. There is a frustrating lack of facts in the entire discussion IMO.
  2. According to this link, 41 of the 78 mass shootings dating back to 1983 ended in shooter suicide. A further 10 were killed by police. Some of those could have been suicide by cop. Its possible to describe half or more of these mass shootings as flamboyant suicides. According to the yahoo link above, "And it’s worth noting that 2646 could have a real impact on suicidal patients, too, who account for the vast majority of gun-related tragedies in America." There must be something that differentiates the suicidal from the ones who want to take out a bunch of people with them. I think before we do away with patient-doctor confidentiality, we should pinpoint what exactly that factor(s) is.
  3. Interesting comp. However if the best offer for Plouffe is a single 2nd round pick in A ball, I hope the Twins would pass.
  4. Did not realize Sean Rodriguez has logged 118 PAs as a first baseman for the Pirates.
  5. Lineups are up: Cubs Jake Arrieta ® 1. Dexter Fowler (S) CF 2. Kyle Schwarber (L) RF 3. Kris Bryant ® LF 4. Anthony Rizzo (L) 1B 5. Tommy La Stella (L) 3B 6. Starlin Castro ® 2B 7. Miguel Montero (L) C 8. Addison Russell ® SS 9. Jake Arrieta ® P Pirates Gerrit Cole ® 1. Gregory Polanco (L) RF 2. Josh Harrison ® 3B 3. Andrew McCutchen ® CF 4. Starling Marte ® LF 5. Francisco Cervelli ® C 6. Neil Walker (S) 2B 7. Jordy Mercer ® SS 8. Sean Rodriguez ® 1B 9. Gerrit Cole ® P
  6. I'm not sure I'd trust Hughes or Gibson any more than Milone. Perhaps its Gibson's turn to be the 28 year old depth guy as he has an option year left. Santana Duffey May Berrios Milone
  7. After the first day of sanctions, the ruble lost 20% of its value. The Russian central bank had to jack up interest rates as the ECB, BOC and BOJ started easing. Its economy is contracting as Putin is expanding Russia's reach. At some point, if external forces don't compel him, internal ones will. Putin needs a reality check, its not 1964 anymore.
  8. The Twins do have a mediocre TV deal but they should see a nice boost in season ticket sales over the winter. Attendance trails W-L record by a year. You would think payroll will go up just from that.
  9. Correct me if I'm wrong but there are already outstanding EU/US sanctions from the Crimean annexation last year. I don't know if most westerners appreciate the impact of sanctions since we've never lived under them. The Russian economy is in recession. Perhaps Russia's foreign policy is as simple as throwing sand into any western action to use them as bargaining chips in any new discussions about lifting existing sanctions or adding new ones.
  10. Hou vs. KC should be a helluva matchup, can't wait.
  11. IMO one every 3-4 games seems reasonable. So 40-50 I would guess. I guess we have different noses.
  12. Fair enough. I also assumed 100% outs on the 62% figure and 100% hits on the 24% figure which is not going to be the case either. Out of curiosity what do you think is a reasonable spread for total number of balls missed/caught between the worst corner outfielder and the best corner outfielder over ~1300 innings? Assume, for sake of expediency, both fielders see an average distribution of batted balls.
  13. That's really interesting.
  14. Good question, I have no idea who he might want. Think he would peel anyone from the Twins?
  15. Heyward seems like a good candidate for an opt-out contract. Guarantee him 7-10 years but give him an opt-out after year 4 to get a 2nd pay day. That is a new element of risk but also seems like a strong chance to pay only for his best years.
  16. At the risk of derailing the thread, that was never in doubt. The reason that 14% remainder of plays are valued so highly by metrics is that they so often go for extra bases. Over a full season that's ~35 made or un-made plays separating the worst from the best fielders. 35 outfield hits equating to 3-4 wins seems perfectly plausible IMO. I think a lot of fans let their preconceptions of outfield metrics color their judment of Hunter's defense. We can agree Heyward is a very good outfielder. I highly doubt the market will pay him exactly 2.0 dWAR = 15.8M or whatever that value is on the open market. He will get paid mainly for his OBP and his age.
  17. Yankees RH bats lifetime against Keuchel: ARod is 1/7 with 4 k's lifetime. Tex: 2/9, 1 BB, 3 K Headley: 3/13, 0 BB, 6 K Beltran has fared a little better - 4/10, 1 HR, 1 BB, 1K Most everyone else will be a LH hitter tonight. For Tanaka's part: Carter: 1/2 with a HR Rasmus: 0/3 with a K Valbuena: 3/9, 2 2Bs, 2 Ks Castro: 0/2, 2 Ks I predict a low scoring game.
  18. Upton and Cespedes also hitting FA this winter. edit: Span too
  19. Heyward is very intriguing. A lot of value is tied up in his defense, maybe that lowers his price tag? Still should command a 9 figure deal easily.
  20. I know May had been battling a hip thing. Maybe Arcia?
  21. That's exactly the sort of trade I'm talking about. A prospect package for one blue chip player, like the Jays did last winter, clearing 40 man space in the process. Who knows, maybe they could get Sonny Gray or Jose Fernandez.
  22. I would definitely listen on players 26-40 on the roster right now. Buxton, Kepler, Polanco, Santana, Tonkin (if they have any value), etc. for actual MLB players.
  23. Extending Sano wouldn't be that risky. We already know he can be a ~.900 DH at worst. Extending Escobar would be risky.
  24. Ok, season's over. Extend Sano before the Cubs extend Bryant for 15/335
