  1. I think the context in which the questions were asked is important. The same answer will have a different impact depending on the context of the question. I like the way Ryan is sincere about his answers. And let's be honest: he is going to be criticized no matter which way he answers the question. If he paints this optimistic picture that you seem to be wanting, others will say he is out of touch with reality and trying to deceive fans and season ticket holders.
  2. Didn't Gordon play 3rd base when he first came up?
  3. I'm not a fan of defensive metrics as I've seen too many examples that just don't make sense. Those spray charts, however, are very illustrative and are a very straightforward way of showing the difference. With left field being relatively large in Target Field, I hope the Twins go get an athletic left fielder and don't rely on Buxton to be the only answer to our outfield problems. Arcia definitely needs to stay in right (or DH if Vargas doesn't make it).
  4. I believe what most people are saying in this regard is "prove that you are ready for the next level by showing that you have nothing left to learn or gain at the current level". Of course, nobody knows how they will do in the majors until they actually are there. If you can't do it in the minors, you won't do it in the majors. I would start Sano in AAA, and if he performs at a high level over the first couple of months, bring him up. Buxton needs longer - I doubt we see him with the Twins this year.
  5. Two minor quibbles here: Arcia raked at AAA before being called up, which makes his situation different than Sano / Buxton who have not played at that level yet. I would also say that to describe Arcia as a "really good player right now" is not accurate. The Twins can roll these guys out there now because they are not contending but on a better team, Arcia would be working these bugs out of his game in the minors.
  6. While Hicks has nothing to do with this.....there is a "right" time for each player to get their shot, and a cost when it is too soon. I agree that "the right time" for these two is going to be earlier than other prospects, but Buxton hasn't even played in AA yet. Let them start in AAA and AA and earn the trip to the big leagues. If they can't do it in the minors, there is no point in bringing them to the majors. Besides, we got our fresh blood in the lineup - it looks nothing like it did at the beginning of the season.
  7. I think we really need to take a realistic view of Mint. He's getting a lot of credit for the Miracle's success, which is fine. However, with the talent they had, I don't think these last couple of seasons necessarily proves that he is a great managerial candidate (it also doesn't prove that he is not). My point is this: pick him if you think he has what it takes to be a great manager but don't pick him based on a very short run of success. We just fired a guy with a better track record in that regard.
  8. Given what Morneau experienced, you have to wonder if concussions have long lasting effects that the player is not even aware of. Morneau struggled mightily for quite a while and then, magically, is back to one of the best hitters around. My guess is that Joe bounces back next year to normal career type production. I also believe that he will be one of the better defensive first baseball by this time next year - you could almost see the development over the course of the season. I have given up hope, however, that the move to first base will limit his injuries.
  9. Nothing but good things to say about the guy. Plus, Gardy identified him as the leader of this team now. Hopefully his improvement will be to cut down on his strikeouts and then we will have something special. His fielding is as good as it gets - second base is really his spot. All the athletic diving plays he makes just weren't possible when he was playing short. He didn't have the time or the arm to pull off what he does at second.
  10. Fair enough. I will assume going forward that we will dismiss all criticism of Ryan for poor drafting. Seems like I've read that before around here....
  11. Its not a popular opinion because there is not a shred of evidence to support it. Its pure speculation on your part because you don't like the guy.
  12. OK - since you don't seem to grasp the answers that I have already provided, I'll try again. How many 90+ loss seasons: 7. There, now you have to wait at least 3 more years before you ask the question again.
  13. I'm not sure what is "unfair" - everyone will have their own opinion on your question and my answer would include "it depends on a whole bunch of factors". You would like to judge him after one poor season I am guessing and want him fired. That's fine - not the way I look at it.
  14. Not going there with you Mike (its your favorite question). Plus, GMs get graded on many things beside wins and losses.
  15. GMs need to be judged over a much longer time frame than managers. Their main responsibilities (like a farm system) are all things that take time. Its too early to cast judgment on Ryan's second tenure. I liked Gardy as a person. However, I'm sure we can find another manager that will do equally well or better. I absolutely don't feel that way about Ryan - chances of finding someone better to guide this franchise is pretty low. And if we are going to rip on the free agent signings, I think we also need to recognize that Hughes and Suzuki were two of the best signings and many of the pitchers TD posters were clamoring for Ryan passed on and avoided a landmine.
  16. Ok, so catchers stealing two strikes per game are putting fear into hitters. I got it. If that's true- you ain't much of a hitter.
  17. So hitters are "scared" of certain catchers because they garner an extra two strikes per game? They wouldn't even notice an extra two strikes per game much less fear it. I get that certain catchers are better behind the plate than others but the whole notion gets extrapolated much too far.
  18. Ok how about his observations are precisely the type of biased observations that are scorned sabremetricians?
  19. Well, since he is 10 for 25 I guess his perceptions are not entirely accurate. Defensive metrics are highly inaccurate with pitch framing being the worst culprit.
  20. I'm ok with this either way - I do not harbor any hopes that the Twins will magically be better because of a different manager but maybe a different voice will help. I will give him credit in that one of the ways coaches / managers should be judged is if their players play hard for them. Gardy has always gotten maximum effort from his players even when they had nothing to play for. I'm sure he will get another chance - he would be a good fit for a veteran ballclub.
  21. The problem with prospects is that it takes multiple legit prospects to end up with one bona fide big leaguer. This makes is tempting to trade them as most never pan out but also is the reason that you have to hoard them if you are going to have a strong minor league system, consistently improving the big league club with better replacements. To me the answer is this: you have to trade from an actual position of strength, where you have players waiting in the wings that have proven themselves or darn close to such. To do otherwise just opens a different hole and weakens your farm system by creating another weakness where we are short on prospects for too long. Had Rosario progressed, we maybe would be in a position to move Dozier but not now. I really think that the next position of "strength" will be at DH. We just cleared out one log jam and another is building already.
  22. He's been a breath of fresh air. I also think it is worth noting that he thrived under the Twins "throw strikes" philosophy
  23. It's now being reported that the Twins have offered him a chance to pitch an inning this weekend which he declined Classy on both parts especially because took himself out of a couple games early in the year.
  24. Wow the Twins took a castoff and turned him into an ace for $7 million per year. They must have a shrewd GM and effective pitching coach.
