  1. For as much abuse as Prince is taking, the Rubio/Wiggins/Prince/Garnett/Towns unit is the best defensive squad the Wolves have had since Sprewell said $8 million wasn't enough to feed his kids. Bjelica is at the point where he's Kevin Love-lite. I wonder if the next step for the Wolves is to look to make a move for a youngster with 3 & D potential-- maybe Andre Roberson from Oky City. It has to be a better idea than bringing in an aging Deng or Corey Brewer.
  2. I like the thought of keeping Wiggins at SG and forcing the mismatch on him, then trying to find a good 3 and D at SF. If they could get the 2005 version of Prince, it would be the perfect piece. While we've got a time machine in that scenario, we might as well grab the 2002 version of KG too.
  3. Post game tweet: The Wolves are shooting 49.5% with Ricky Rubio on the floor. And 32.7% when he's sitting.
  4. A healthy Rubio and Pek, they can win somewhere in the 30s. If they're not, well, Ben Simmons wouldn't be a bad piece to add.
  5. I was hoping this thread would be about Tony Batistia.
  6. Buxton v. Hicks is in a ways this years' Santana v. Escobar. Hicks is never going to be a superstar, but he looks set to be on a run as a Mike Cameron-esq center fielder for a couple of years. But playing right would also lower his value. Buxton, on the other hand, could be a superstar, but he's not quite there yet. If you could have Hicks ready to make a good trade haul as a centerfielder and Buxton ready to be a star by next July, that would be the dream scenario.
  7. I don't care if a guy throws 88 or 168 miles per hour as long as they get strikeouts. Greg Maddux didn't throw hard, but three other really good pitches and a change up that defined a generation. That's the definition in shelling this as a debate of stuff vs. velocity. You're never going to get a guy like Pelfrey to get strikeouts though unless you can go back in time and teach him a second and third pitch, even though he throws hard. He simply doesn't have great stuff.
  8. Ideally, you're going to need Martin and Rudez to stretch the other team's defense so they can't collapse on the hoop and clog the lane. I'm skeptical about how well Lavine and Wiggins will play out together on the same court, but when Rubio gets healthy my gut feeling is he'll help space things out better with his passing. It should be an interesting year.
  9. Both as one of the biggest concerns of the Twins going forward and to irk Nick Nelson. http://espn.go.com/mlb/playoffs2015/story/_/page/playoffs15/bringing-heat-key-success-mlb-postseason
  10. Better hitting team. With just enough pitching to get rolled in the Wild Card game the next two years!
  11. So Mauer, Berrios, Burdi and Tapia for Tulo and Hawkins, as a not perfect but fairly close approximation. Who's happy with that?
  12. Hoffman is number 33 on BA's top 50 midseason prospect list. Castro is a better version of Burdi. Even Tinoco shows promise. If that's getting off cheaply, I'd hate to see paying through the nose.
  13. I'm not sure I'd agree with pennies. Hoffman might have the highest upside of any pitcher in the minors right now. And for the Twins to trump what the Jays gave up it would have cost at least Berrios and another interesting arm. That's not exactly cheap, especially when you take what's remaining on Tulo's contract into account. And I'm not sure I'd trade remaining schedules with Toronto. 13 games against the Yankees isn't exactly what I'd call an easy task.
  14. That we're not as good as the Yankees, Pirates, Blue Jays and Angels yet? And really, what was the deadline trade that was going to make us that good?
  15. There are 55 games left after tonight. More than half of them are against teams with losing records. And 25 of them are against Cleveland, Detroit and the White Sox, which are waving giant surrender flags.
  16. 1. The problem with this team is they've played .667 ball against the teams they should beat. And .333 ball against the team that they shouldn't. That's why it's been a little bit of a Mr. Toad's Wild Ride season. But If those numbers hold, there are plenty of wins left on the schedule. They're also at an extreme disadvantage in any Wild Card game. 2. The real wins this season didn't count in the standings anyway. That veteran pitchers are already afraid of Sano is a big one. Hicks stepping up at least defensively and potentially at the plate is another one. May looking like he can be a cromulent starter is a win. Hughes fell back, but he looks like he can be the new Radke over the next couple of years. Gibson stepped up to where he's a decent enough mid-rotation guy. 3. For the rest of the season to be successful, the first kind of wins are nice. But the second kind of wins are more important.
  17. At the same time: Hu didn't make the Twins BA top 30 list (Tapia was #29). Hu was number 20 on Sickels' list, with a C+ grade, albeit with a sleeper alert on him. Hu is having a nice season at Fort Myers, but his peripheral numbers are starting to regress. The write-up BA had on Hu seemed pretty much what you'd expect given his numbers. 90-91 sinker. No other really good secondary pitches. His probable upside is more #4 starter/middle reliever than guy you regret trading. As for Meisner v. Hu, if I have to pick one I go Meisner. He strikes me more as the Mets version of Stewart than Hu. And if they had traded Stewart or Gonsalves, well, that would have been a trade that's worth outrage.
  18. Travis is the only one of those players on the right side of 30. The core of their offense is approaching their decline phase years. And they gutted their farm system to make a final run. If Toronto were a Led Zeppelin song, they'd be Achilles' Last Stand.
  19. Different strokes for different folks. If the Twins had given up Berrios to get Price, what would the reaction have been? Toronto may catch us, and they're the better team. But they also have 13 games against the Yankees left. And whoever takes over if Anthopolous gets fired is inheriting a dumpster fire next year.
  20. Sorry then, 25 games against the AL Central dreck, including 13 against the Indians, plus series with Tampa, Texas and Seattle is all the hope I can give you.
  21. Could it have been done earlier? Perhaps. But none of us are privy to the full story. Maybe they had their eye on someone else and they lost out so Jepsen was plan B or C. Does it move the needle? Probably not. But nothing short of giving up a small fortune for Price was really going to move the needle. This team is pretty average across the board, but they have enough games against some really bad teams where holding on to the wild card is feasible. Will Jepsen be worth $5 million next year? The Magic 8 Ball says ask again later. But its not like Hu and Tapia were A or B prospects and the Twins had better internal options for right now.
  22. I liked Hu, but pitchers with decent command and three average offerings tend to be rotation or bullpen fodder if they make it. Tapia is the better lottery ticket, because his velocity could tick up, But he's still a lottery ticket. Granted, Jepsen doesn't fix much. He's just a slightly better option than what we have.
  23. <Abbott&Costello> He cost us Hu? </Abbott&Costello>
