  1. I'm indifferent to what they do with Anderson if they keep Gardy.
  2. You wrote an article that long just to say that perhaps Rick Anderson should go?
  3. I think the Twins have reached a point where it is impossible for them to do anything without being criticized. The only difference was this was a national guy instead of local. The Twins have reached a point where people are just looking for a chance to pile on and are actually upset when something positive happens. And I"ll repeat my defense of the marketing department - it might look bad, but there is really no way to put lipstick on this pig and make it presentable. That isn't the marketing department's problem.
  4. Dozier? Arcia? Santana? Vargas? Pinto? Hughes extension? Mauer extension? Hicks (wishful thinking)? By 2020, you would have the same $87 mil for the 4 fa, plus potential of guys listed above, plus guys that debut next year (Sano, Buxton, Meyer, Berrios, etc) starting to get paid for arb. Same issue in 2021, but even more expensive arb cases. Obviously all these guys aren't going to make it to arb, but that also counts no other free agents to fill in possible holes that are filled by guys that don't make it internally. There is, without question, a window of 4-5 years to go big on a fa or two, and I hope they do, but they only really have one or two shots to do so, not 4.
  5. Your math confuses and frightens me. Unless I am misunderstanding your point, the 2019 payroll would be $87 mil with just the 4 hypothetical fa signings. And this assumes basically no one else makes above the minimum (to stay under $100 mil)?
  6. Every single person on the roster and even guys in the minors right now will receive raises in that time frame. So no, they couldn't do one of those contracts the next four years and stay under $100 mil. They probably couldn't even do two.
  7. The Twins are currently #6 in mlb in runs and trending upward. The lineup is good enough to at least be competitive (which is not to say it can't be upgraded). EDIT: They are actually #5 behind Oakland, Angels, Tigers, Rockies.
  8. I recommend you look at some of the other teams and see who has hit in the #3 and #4 spots of the order at least once this year. It will change your perspective on how devastating it is that Dozier and Plouffe ended up there a couple of times this year.
  9. And he is quoted yesterday as saying Pinto has made significant strides in all aspects of catching.
  10. And the bullpen could use serious upgrades as well. The way I would plan with Buxton and Sano is to plan on nothing next year, but to pretty much avoid a long commitment at those positions. From August 31, 2014 to April 1, 2015 I would anticipate 2 different hitters (not counting Pinto for Fryer) and 5 different pitchers at a minimum.
  11. I must add that Nick accusing someone of using excessive hyperbole is especially funny.
  12. You undersold the Twins, they were first in runs in August. But alas the record was the same.
  13. Those positions are all locked in for September. He had a great year but was at AA for less than half a season. All we need is just a little patience.
  14. I think this is a little too aggressive in expectations. The Twins will graduate 5 everyday position guys (if you count Hicks/Pinto) and a handful of pitchers in two years. Very few teams can match that. And the top three still haven't made it. No farm system ever can turn over a roster in only a couple of years.
  15. I just don't see how that is possible that the best players will lose time. Pinto replaces Fryer and some Suzuki, Hicks replaces some Escobar and some Schafer, and the other 2 everyday guys won't play very much, especially not at the expense of anyone you are thinking of. The pitchers could get some innings, but that is probably a good thing considering the current state of the bullpen.
  16. Maybe next August. Made no sense to call him up this year. Dozier is playing almost every day and it is time to give Santana some run at SS.
  17. Ryan was quoted as saying he wanted to shut down Pryor after coming back from labrum surgery. Apparently his velo was down the last game or two. Still likes his future, so there's that.
  18. I'm not opposed to throwing a minor league vet a bone, but the priority absolutely has to be giving the vast majority of reps to players that could potentially help next year. Pinto, Herrmann, Hicks and whatever relievers need to get a look. Probably about time to move away from Fryer, Parmelee, Duensing, Burton, Swarzak, Deduno.
  19. Nick hit it big time, a preliminary PST VII nomination on Twitter!
  20. A September callup will mean nothing in regards to starting the season in the rotation.
  21. You're much too kind to Duensing, and how did you not mention Fryer? But I suspect your list (other than Pelfrey) will be accurate when it is time to make the decision, and I would add Duensing, Fryer, Ibarra and Milone, possibly Pino and also Schafer if they can't come to an agreement (they won't go to arb with him).
  22. Davis is under contract for next year.
  23. I suspect concern about the total payroll is immaterial as long as it approved by ownership. What probably makes Ryan uncomfortable is having over 40% of the payroll locked up in two players and going over 4 (or possibly 5) years for a pitcher.
