  1. I get the sense that he's working from a strict sense of "C equal adequate". Though I agree Dozier should most certainly be an A. I'm not sure what else he could really do. But Mauer has earned every bit of that D.
  2. I think that's the point of discussion that becomes the most difficult thing for Twins fans to accept. This may be what Mauer is - a 23 million dollar, inferior hitting first baseman. And if that's the case, does that change the outlook for this team?
  3. The Husk of Josh Willingham should not be logjamming Pinto. That's precisely the problem.
  4. Except Hicks really hasn't proven he can hit the lower level pitching. Certainly not with this new approach. That's a very key difference.
  5. Arguing about counterfactuals is counter-productive.
  6. Michael Rand posted the following video about the Twins and their current record. He even cited our own Nick Nelson and his most recent blog entry. So here's my question after watching it: Which of his obstacles are the Twins most likely to see reverse itself? A) The .197 cleanup hitting (.596 OPS. The fifth spot is managing only a .630 OPS. An sOPS+ of 58 and 68) Mauer's production. C) The team's league worst ERA D) Lineup consistency
  7. It did for Hunter and Morneau....is this something we continue ad infinitum? If the minor leagues weren't effective for helping with player development.....they wouldn't be used for player development. By and large, where the pressure is off, that's a safer place to work on skills.
  8. I would totally agree. It's going back on a ball that he has to take his eyes off of. Unfortunately for a CF, that's pretty important. I still think with his athleticism there is a good CF in him. It's just not even close to happening at this point, isolated spectacular catches or not.
  9. He's robbed 3 homeruns. He's made figure 8's in the outfield dozens of times. Several times more this season than he's robbed homeruns. His catch was spectacular. This play was pretty good too (or this one). I'm certainly not using that one play to base my judgement off of that player either. Small sample sizes please, cmon.
  10. It wasn't perfect. He made a great catch but he made it harder on himself too. That's just being honest about what happened and not trying to paint it as perfection. I'd argue given this team's pitching staff Hicks has had more opportunities than most to rob homeruns (rimshot?), but in truth flashy players don't make for great defenders. Great defenders make all the plays, typically making them routinely. Hicks has often struggled with routine plays. I'd give up every flashy play this season just to avoid one of these. And those happen far too often.
  11. Ouch for the name drops in #13......
  12. Um...he jumped the wrong angle....that's why he had to reach back to get it. He was a full foot (maybe more) too far to the left of the ball. He just has enough athleticism to make up for it. It was a spectacular catch any way you slice it, but that doesn't mean he didn't make it a bit harder on himself by getting lost on the flight path of the ball. That is not knocking the catch, that's just not overglorifying it either. It wasn't perfect, but he made it and that's what matters. It was a helluva catch. Also, you don't do figure 8's to set up for a throw. Start behind the ball or take an angle? Sure. Literally turn your body around? Ugh...no.
  13. Not enough opportunities to qualify, but yeah...they play the position very similarly.
  14. It wasn't "flawless" but it was a great catch. He still, as demonstrated on it, has trouble tracking the ball without watching it, but that was a very difficult grab that he made a nice catch on. But one good catch doesn't change all the other circular routes he's taken. It's just one great catch.
  15. I was entertained...but Hughes was on the mound and Arcia was back. The next time Correia pitches? Not appointment television. Maybe I'm just sour after really trying to invest in watching last weekend's series. I'm probably not being fair.
  16. The problem is the margin of error makes "doing it badly" far more likely than doing it well.
  17. People are talking out of both sides of their mouth on this one. I honestly can't understand why anyone would suggest it's a good idea to have someone learn a totally new skill against competition already beating them routinely. It's an incredibly poor development idea. Not unlike if we were to just call up Stewart tomorrow with the idea that "he has to work it out against MLB hitting someday right?" You want to keep him up out of necessity by poor roster decisions? Ok, I guess. I'm not convinced of it, but I get it. You want him to fight through it because it'll help to be at the MLB level for this? That's certifiably crazy in my mind and people are making that argument. And they are using a whole host of small sample sizes to do it. This thread and the other are full of examples of it. If I argued his 0-2 last night was an example of a failed experiment it would only be mildly more invalid than saying "Look at the last 40 at bats!". Ditto the idea that one very nice catch last night invalidates the fact that he runs around out there like he's dodging drone attacks. (Credit: Labombo) Lots of subpar or struggling defenders make nice plays. With his athleticism I'd expect nothing less, but one spectacular play doesn't make up for the league lead in F8BC. (Figure 8s before making a catch)
  18. Maybe I'm just lucky. On any given night I have 4-5 possible radio stations carrying the game, even if the Moondogs or high school stuff pre-empts a few of them I still have a slew of options.
  19. Are people finding these games entertaining? I am entertained when Hughes is on the mound and Deduno as well....but the rest of the time I keep feeling like I'm watching the same bad baseball as last year, but that everyone has a 4 leaf clover around their necks. I guess I haven't found the brand of baseball this year all that compelling. (Though Dozier is fun to watch and Arcia is a welcome relief to see as well)
  20. So you're saying a night in the bomb shelter is in order?
  21. We hicks are lucky to have a bevy of affiliates. It's strange that an area with as many cows as people can more easily listen to the team play.
  22. It's nice to see them have good fortune and get an undeserved win last night. But I really see them making a run at their Pythagorean record.
  23. Would you like to call up Kohl Stewart and let him learn at the major league level? I would imagine your answer is no. Answer A with the same logic.
  24. And this meme is old too. I've seen very few people "give up on him". I've seen the vast majority of people say "Time to go to AAA for a bit". These are not the same thing by any stretch of the imagination.
