  1. I love a good alternative station, but this one doesn't mix up old and new alternative music enough. WAY too much of the same 6-10 songs. But it is better than the Current, that station sucks.
  2. I'm excited about him but whoa man...you may want to slow your roll on that a bit. At least for a little bit to let him develop or you're going to be disappointed.
  3. The numbers are better for Mussina than my perception of him. I always thought of him in the "very good" but not "elite" category. David Cone is a guy that comes to mind as a similar level of pitcher to me.
  4. Yup and I hope what people remember is that this comes with prospect development. Players have to make adjustments and that usually entails a drop in production. It just means we have to temper our immediate expectations for the kid, but I'm with the other posters here - I'm all-in on Vargas being a big-time part of the solution here.
  5. I expect him to regress this year and come back strong in 2016.
  6. After last year I'm wondering if Dougie M. or Denny Hocking are able to break in an OF glove. We don't feel that much different this year from that abysmal decision.
  7. If the Twins go with Schafer and Hicks it is all but formal acknowledgement that Hicks has busted out. I really hope the Twins haven't given up on him yet. Send him to AAA and hope that ship hasn't sailed just yet.
  8. Very deserving class.
  9. It's one thing to take a chance on a player like Hicks. It's another to repeatedly go in with no alternatives.
  10. I'm glad we all agree that the only thing that makes sense (something like 4/18) would require Brian Dozier to have a lobotomy before agreeing. So, basically, an extension isn't going to happen yet. (As it should be)
  11. Oh cmon, most scouts acknowledge they don't get to see players in person much at all and much of their scouting work is done from cut-up tapes. You keep adding things on to the plate that just aren't really there in a scouting profile. It's not a diss on scouting, it's just the nature of the beast. Getting a true picture of a player's defensive abilities takes a lot of sample (whether that is with eye test or defensive metrics) to get an accurate idea and that's just not possible. Here is a relevant article. And some quotes: "Outfield-wise, oh boy . . . it's a real crapshoot. To see an outfielder do a few things, shoot, you might have to watch five games." For me, of course over a couple of years with a college guy and you hope to see him a couple of times per year. I'm just taking the reality of scouting and being clear about the practical effect that has on a scout's accuracy.
  12. I too think it'd be nice to see someone with the guts to dive both feet in for a few seasons to see how it works. It's just going to take a lot of determination to stick with it if things go awry.
  13. Crain got 3 years and 13M, that is a far cry from 4/36. I just wouldn't use 4/36 as a good example. I've always been torn on this subject. In theory I agree with the idea of not limiting yourself by the roles you assign to players. At the same time, I also know as a human being that I like having some routine and my job to contain relatively predictable situations and circumstances. (And that this helps me do my job) I think this may be one of those times where theory doesn't work when the rubber hits the road, no matter how well-intentioned and argued the theory is.
  14. I'd suggest this is a very new phenomenon. His deal doesn't have a lot of precedent.
  15. I don't think the presence or absence of guns (or regulations) is our problem. I firmly believe our problem is that guns are sexy and awesome in American culture. Our cultural perspective on guns is the true problem, not how many there are or what kind of gun they are.
  16. I don't think a spread out sampling is any less of a small sample. When you watch a pitcher he's on the whole time. A batter will be up and on display regularly. A fielder? You could see one chance the whole game. This erratic nature of defense I'd unlike scouting offense or pitching skills. It's how Trevor Plouffe is a two time "best infielder" according to BA. I could list others too that are simply preposterous. Only the Twins have a good idea about Sano's true defensive abilities, the rest of us are going to need to see more.
  17. To add to this - there are also quite a few armed populaces that still met the boot of a tyrant. Even today. And even further, if the goal of the second amendment is to have an armed populace...fine. Why does that mean every Sally Shopper and Bob Browser at Walmart have to be packing heat? Is that where the government is going to strike first or something?
  18. 10-15 games is still a small sample. I don't disagree that Sano is likely to be a sub-par defender, but I'm not going to start shuffling pieces on that yet. I would trust what the Twins' minor league coaches say for sure, but we don't have access to that information.
  19. It's hard for all of us to know that obviously, but we are talking about a fairly established, multiple season pattern of indifference (to outright disregard) of outfield defense. So I don't buy that out you are trying to give them.
  20. It is relevant, people are making sweeping assumptions about Sano's future based on minor league scouting. That's just a bad idea for a number of reasons.
  21. All you can see with any reliability in that small sample is arm strength. Hicks is a great example...catch him on a good weekend and I get the scouting reports about how good he is. Watch him over an extended period of time and the poor instincts, the sub par range for his speed, and the mental errors takeover. I have seen many, many garbage reports because they saw a poorly reflective small sample. By most all accounts this kind of small sampling is how scouting happens. That just doesn't work for defense.
  22. Do you think you can get a good vibe from watching a weekends worth of ball games? These scouts aren't sitting there for two weeks, it's a game or two to evaluate their defense. That's just not sufficient for a good idea of defensive abilities.
  23. Not possible? No, it's possible and would be valuable. Is anything close to an accurate and reliable method being done now? God no.
  24. I'd prefer not to make a decision on Sano playing third base until after we've seen him play it a bit. Minor league defensive scouting reports are garbage. I hope Plouffe forces a tough choice though. It's a good problem to have.
