  1. he was last year too, at least improvements. And then he ran over Molitor's dog or something. Right around August 1st.
  2. I don't think acting like adults is superficial. You can be competitive without the unwritten rules being necessary. I think that's really the crux of the disagreement. And I'm more than a bit baffled that you think competitiveness requires this. Or that rivalries require it. Really, all the unwritten rules do is offer shade to overly sensitive players that want to enact revenge. And if you want to be overly sensitive in any job and enact revenge, you could. It's just most of us don't, because laws prevent us from doing it and basic decorum. Baseball allows it to operate because, for whatever reason, trying to hurt someone else is ok. It doesn't have to be. I played football and hockey, I had rivalries, I was competitive, and never once did I feel I had to intentionally try to hurt the other player in order to stay competitive.
  3. It's a daunting task. Plan a month to get through it.
  4. Great post Nick. I loved LOTR as a book, but I think the movies transcended the book by cutting all the filler and really emphasizing the best of the book. I'm hoping the same here. I loved the Dark Tower Saga, but I'd be lying if I didn't say there were entire sections that bored me or I thought were just plain stupid.
  5. Well, I'm sure construction workers could create an equally ambiguous unwritten code if they wanted to. It's really not that hard, it's just most of us act like adults when we're adults.
  6. I can't speak for everyone else, but you won't here me complain. I acknowledge and expect struggles, so I won't overreact when it happens. But that's just me, I understand the concern more generally.
  7. I would add that he can only (seemingly) discover/refine that in AAA. That's the part that gets me. That it's somehow impossible for this to happen with the big league coaching staff.
  8. I'm not saying they are incompetent, I'm saying it's hard to find any good reason for this move. And it's frustrating to see maybe the biggest wild card for not only this year, but many years to come, spinning his wheels.
  9. I don't disagree that there is an element of ignorance here, but if we let that stop us you might as well shut this puppy down. In general, when I see a prospect that dominant, I'd rather see them work on what they need to succeed at the next level on the next level. I'm entirely consistent on that, it's exactly what I said about Buxton. It feels more to me that people are picking and choosing their position on this relative to what the FO is doing and not on what they would argue in another situation. I'm sure if Berrios comes up and struggles we'll hear "See! Told you he wasn't ready!" or if he succeeds: "See! Told you what they were doing was going to work!" Me? I just believe a kid that has demonstrated mastery on something ought to move to the next challenge. Having him do the thing he mastered already, doesn't really help the new skill as much as, you know, working on the new skill in the context he needs it.
  10. I get showing the FO some benefit of the doubt approach. But 5 months ago I could also argue Falvey came from an organization that clearly understood the benefit of a good bullpen and have used that logic to defend my thinking that they'd be aggressive fixing that. Well, they weren't. These guys aren't in Cleveland and Texas any more, we sort of have to judge what is going on here and now. And for the very same reason I want to see Buxton stay through his struggles, I'm willing to endure struggles from Berrios as well. At some point, you have to learn how to do it in the big leagues because it's a different animal. It feels to me like we're trying to make someone a better math student by having them do 1+1 a few hundred times. That's not how you refine a new, more challenging skill. And at some point, doing that not only fails to advance your abilities, it might stunt them altogether.
  11. Nick Tepesch is such a poor talent his innings have been limied to *drumroll*.....4 in the last three years. C'mon man. Berrios' talent, pitching success at AAA, and upside are why I want him. And because he's not Nick freaking Tepesch.
  12. At some point, I also have to actually do the job. You can train me until the cows come home, but at some point I have to do it. And in baseball, that step is very different than your typical job and many, many players with serious talent never make it. I get some deference to the judgment of the new FO, but the kid has been in AAA a long time with a demonstrated history of success. The team is about to pitch Nick Tepesch instead of him. You seem to believe an indefinite sentence in AAA is warranted unless he meets....some standard....I guess. The standard you believe the team is rightly holding him to or whatever it might be. I preach patience too, but I preach patience in letting the kids adjust to the difficulties of the major league game. Not patience with making your only high end pitching prospect rack up hundreds of AAA innings. Hell, I'd almost rather our best pitching prospects never pitch in AAA, much less rack up 200 innings there.
  13. I don't see how Berrios is going to be any bigger detriment than Nick Tepesch. I get what you're trying to do Pseudo, but you should feel how shaky the ground is you're treading on. You're punching blindly for reasons and the ones you can find for solace aren't all that strong.
  14. And I think the question on the table is, how possible is it to "work past that success". At some point, the game is just so different, you're not even able to work on the skills needed for the next level because the one you're at doesn't present you the opportunity.
  15. Perhaps, but I'll ask the same question - how long do you have him keep throwing against inferior hitters? Doesn't, at some point, his success there hinder his ability to progress when he is so dominant?
  16. "Don't tip your pitches" doesn't strike me as the same thing "throw your fastball to the right place". Again, if indeed he has things to work on, just how long do you keep him in AAA? Indefinitely until he does it?
  17. As am I. I love the Elba casting from the get go and seeing this on film is what I imagine Tolkienen nerds felt like when LOTR hit the theaters. I'll be there the first weekend.
  18. I guess I'm confused how many different plans of "command it better" there might be. We don't have any indication they are changing his delivery or anything of that nature.
  19. Well, if the rumors are true and this is a post-novels, more enlightened version of Roland perhaps that explains it? I'm spit-balling, the trailer seems to indicate a very different outline of the story.
  20. Getting both Grossman and Vargas in the lineup against lefties is important. That was more my point.
  21. It might help your case if Molitor didn't use the exact same terms to describe what Berrios is working on as he did last year.
  22. No, internet bets are dumb. But don't worry, when he turns back into an out machine that gets inexplicably walked from time to time, I'll do daily updates in your honor.
  23. I loved this series of books, but this look like a significant change to the story. I guess we'll see how that turns out. Hearing Idris say the "Aim" quotes I think sold me - he can be Roland. This one is pretty high on my interest list this summer.
  24. Kid needs a day off every now and then Dave. I love Kepler, just a reality.
  25. I just think against a tough lefty you could give Kepler the day off from time to time. Just rotate that with Rosario. Most of the ABs should be coming at Mauer's expense though.
