  1. There are ways around that. They could restrict the field to only 2 teams from a conference and put them in the same half of the bracket. I like the do or die aspect right now. If there were 8 teams then a team like Ohio State would likely be in the final 8 field w/o playing in a conference championship game. But I think things could get ugly and political after a couple of years of tossups for the 4th spot. yes, somebody is going to get left out of the 8th spot but at least every power conference would be represented (if deserving) and an independent or Group of 5 conference could get in. Another thing that I really liked that everyone thinks is a longshot to happen would a SEC/BIG10 challenge like they do in basketball. That would be an amazing weekend of football.
  2. I didn't say don't shop him now. I am not concerned if the Twins can't trade him now. The way that they lose in this situation is if they force a trade now.
  3. There is one reason that Plouffe could have more trade value at the ASB (or next offseason). This is a strange offseason where 3B is really, really deep and most contending teams are set at the position. The key to his trade value is a contending team really needing him. If a team loses their 3Bman (to injury) in June/July and are playing Matt Macri for any length of time then they are going put an offer out there that is better than any of this mediocrity that we have read about.
  4. He is a good player (not a great one) and the types of trades mentioned in this thread are completely uninspiring. Somebody mentioned trading Plouffe for a couple 15-20 org prospects. Other trades are going after non-dominant RP'ing almost prospects. Yawn. Basically it is playing out exactly like I thought it would. Why is a team going to trade for Plouffe when Freese (and Daniel Murphy) is out there? Why would they give up a good package of prospects when Frazier is likely available? I don't really buy the substance of these rumors (demand). It all sounds manufactured or even speculated by writers instead of real demand.
  5. So far people are suggesting that a Plouffe trade package is going to get Tropeano or Bedrosian as a main piece? This is very shrugworthy. If Plouffe can't fetch more at midseason then they shouldn't even consider trading him.
  6. I guess I go into the 2015 season trying to win games instead of gutting a team that could have been +.500. They weren't a perfect team but I don't like an org tanking the roster unless they are truly bad. I don't hate the prospects acquired (Folty, Fried and Wisler plus a dozen others) but they are a little underwhelming for Kimbrel, Upton and Gattis (principal trades). I think these trades (comparable) would have been there at midseason. The Heyward for Miller trade makes sense in most situations and especially if you are eyeing the future.
  7. Why not just sign a solid RP in FA? There are several available and this doesn't really make sense. Is he really only worth a guy like Jepsen who was acquired for a guy well outside of the top 100 (and likely top 200)? I can understand trading Plouffe for a top 50-75 prospect and another top 30 (org) guy. I cannot understand trading Plouffe for any number of #15-20 (org) guys. At that point just keep him.
  8. I am just loving the way that the College Football Playoff is working out. There are still a lot of possibilities for the top 4. The Pac 12 is basically eliminated at this point but ND could force out a 2nd major conference. Obviously one of the Big 10 teams has to lose but how do you rank the teams (if they win out) for the last two playoff spots? Could Iowa be left out if they go undefeated? What happens if either UNC or Fla upset Clem or Ala in their conference championship? Do they replace that team as a lock in the playoff? Is it just me or is it much harder to go undefeated or even lose a single game? Is this only due to the added conf championship or has the competition become more intense in the top 25? How long can the Big 12 hold out until they add 2 more teams and a conference championship game? Let's say that ND and a Big 10 team get the final 2 bids. How long until they expand this field to 8 teams (scheduling problems)? I am not sure if that is better or not. If that happens then 2 loss teams are getting in. Locks if they win out Clemson (SC and UNC) Alabama (Auburn and Fla) Strongly in the mix if the win out ND (Stanford) OU (OSU) MSU (PSU and Iowa) Baylor (TCU) Iowa (Neb and MSU) Need help and/or a big upset Ohio St (Mich) OSU (OK) Fla (FSU and Ala) UNC (NCST and Clem)
  9. I also had problems following the ball but that was a shot. I am still disappointed that I didn't get to a SK game while they were in Taiwan (went to US/JP instead).
  10. I guess I was including last offseason as well. They took a .500 ish team (with problems) and tore it down to the ground.
  11. So the Braves are truly tearing it down, aren't they? At what point does Freeman start demanding a trade? This is ugly.
  12. this is the answer that everyone wants and yet everyone expects that Nolasco will at a minimum have a tenuous hold on a rotation spot somehow.
  13. Are you kidding? The Marlins are not getting rid of Fernandez to get a couple of okay prospects. They would trade him since he is one of the best pitchers in baseball and expect to get a haul. A haul is not dangling 2 prospects that are borderline top 50 pitchers (and a fast fading prospect like Stewart). The Marlins are not in a position where they have to dump Fernandez and probably every team in baseball would be able to put together a trade package that makes Kepler, Polanco and Stewart laughable.
  14. The problem is that there were a lot of indications that Liriano wasn't fully recovered. His velocity was down 4 mph, K's were down and BB were way up. Liriano looked like a pitcher that wasn't fully recovered and he has never returned to his pre TJ form. Every indication is that Fernandez is completely back.
  15. I don't think a long term deal is possible but I think they could buyout a year of FA (the more common result). I am okay with 'only' having him for 3-4 years.
  16. Adding to the bullpen really depends on other moves that the Twins make due to cash available and May being in the rotation or bullpen. Let's assume that the Twins have made their big moves and keep May in the bullpen (not what I want). Based on that I sign the best guy that will take 2/12 (ballpark). I might also look at signing a cheaper LOOGY. That gives the Twins a pretty deep bullpen with potential in AAA/AA although it isn't necessarily dominant at the backend.
  17. Johan Santana was a completely different situation than this. Fernandez will make 2-3M next season and below market rates for the following years. That is why (and Bill Smith) the Twins didn't get a comparable package for him. ERA+ is a pretty weak stat to use to show that someone (like Liriano) had fully recovered from TJ. Velocity was way down, K's were way down and BB's were way up. Liriano looked borderline awful that year and got demoted at one point. Fernandez came back like he hadn't been away and he was dominant in his return. It was only 60 innings but he certainly looks fully recovered.
  18. Which part of his comeback doesn't satisfy you? 11 K/9 - power is back 2 BB/9 - control is back 95+mph fastball - power is back Sure there is risk but typically TJ recoverees that don't come back from TJ struggle with control and/or velocity. We aren't talking about acquiring the 30-40th best pitcher (Sonny Gray for example). We are talking about acquiring a Johan Santana level pitcher. If Liriano had posted those kinds of stats his 1st year back then there is not a person on this board that would have traded him for any collection of prospects.
  19. If Fernandez was available then this is the guy you sell part of the farm for. Berrios and Kepler for Jose Fernandez is a no doubter despite how much I like both of them. Even if they only kept him for 3 years Fernandez is the type of guy that completely transforms a team. There are a limited # of spots in a lineup/rotation and the effect of having 2-3 6+ WAR players on the same team is huge. No amount of 2 WAR players comes close to that. And it isn't impossible to find 2+ WAR players. It is nearly impossible to find 6+ WAR players.
  20. I think Duffey and May could be combined into one best thing. Finding two potentially MOR starters or a setup guy out of the midrange prospects is a huge thing for the Twins. Depth on the pitching staff is key for the Twins going forward.
  21. Phil Hughes would have made my list. I really expected him to be the #2 that the Twins needed and he fell apart. Still it is a pretty good list.
  22. I am also pretty sure that you can drop guys if you sign a FA or make a trade during that time. This is a little different since they know that they will be signing someone (hopefully) but there is no such thing as rosters being locked until Rule V.
  23. Miss October 2003 that is the only claim to fame for my HS but that trumps a state championship.
  24. Here is the reason to do it: None of the Twins prospects except Arcia (last chance) should be in the majors and sitting on the bench. Upton was actually halfway decent and could be an option to platoon with Arcia as well as a legit backup CF'er. Buxton is the only true CF'er on the roster right now. Upton > Robinson (not considering the money) The one problem is that Upton is owed 32M vs Nolasco's 25M (inc buyout). That can be worked out though.
  25. There is no reason for this to happen. Vargas is the odd man out with Park, Mauer and Sano (and Plouffe) on the roster but he still has a chance to be a pretty good player. I could see him tearing up the NPB league like Wladimir Balentien (single season HR leader IIRC). That name goes back to the Johan Santana trade rumors when both Balentien and Adam Jones were still with the Mariners.
