  1. This is the kind of thing they should have been doing all season. Play the young kids and see which combos work well. I wouldn't have expected Dieng to play this well but Dieng/Towns are by far the two most talented bigs on the team. Likewise Lavine is one of the most talented players and has been playing more.
  2. It is just a minor league deal but it would be more interesting if the Twins didn't have 20 DH/OF'ers.
  3. I like the idea of buying low on Bruce but I fail to see the point of trading Plouffe off for scraps (the 3B trade market is toast) and sending something valuable for Bruce. I think at the beginning of the offseason I proposed a Bruce trade and acquiring Bruce would be a better choice than Park (not against the signing) since Bruce plays OF and that would allow Sano to be in some sort of DH/3B/1B rotation. Now it appears that the Twins are supposedly out of money to add anyone. Otherwise I would propose a Bruce for Rosario trade.
  4. I don't think you want the distraction around all of the young kids and the fresh image of players owning the coach. It could work out (and KG would help immensely) but it is something that could really backfire. Brooklyn might want Thibodeau but if given the choice of an up and coming team vs that complete disaster then it would be an easy choice. Now if Brooklyn gave him a blank check then he might go there but they are in a hopeless situation. Of course Hoiberg would be an awesome get but I don't see that happening.
  5. I think Tom Thibodeau. Blatt might be a fine coach but he isn't far enough removed from the circus going on around him right now.
  6. The team takes on all of the risk and the player gets big leverage. Let's assume that most FA's are 28-31 yrs old. Some prime or near prime years left and then decline. Scenario A - Player performs great and the team wins. Sort of. After 2-3 yrs they either lose the player or sign them to an even bigger deal (that really ends up in the decline years). The Dodgers got great value out of Greinke but now they have a hole in their rotation. They would certainly prefer to have Greinke for the original contract. At the time I doubt anyone was offering more money than that. Scenario A (pt 2) - The team is forced to resign the player opting out because they can't afford to lose them. This is the ARod and CC scenario where the Yankees gave new contracts to the players well past their primes and are going to pay for it. Scenario B - The player underperforms the contract and the team is stuck with that contract. The bigger concern is the new Cespedes contract. Give me guaranteed money AND continual free agency. If this becomes the norm then offseasons will definitely not be boring for fans at least.
  7. The opt out is going to be viewed differently when we look back at this era of baseball. I think teams are really going to regret letting this become standard. It was a banner year for FA's and I don't think there were enough teams willing to sign FA's to massive deals. One reason is that the Red Sox, Yankees and Dodgers have loaded rosters with bloated contracts already.
  8. These are the types of players that good teams have waiting in AAA to call up when players get injured. I see way too much focus on how player X doesn't have a clear path to the starting lineup and no focus on having depth such that when the inevitable injury occurs there isn't a big drop off in performance. If Dozier gets injured (Polanco traded or at SS because Escobar was traded) then the Twins are looking at Santana or Beresford (or some other AAAA player) in the starting lineup. Big dropoff. If Sano at 3B gets injured then the Twins have Nunez at 3B (if Plouffe is traded). Depth is very important.
  9. The problem with your core going forward is that Wiggins and Lavine or Muhammad might not be able to effectively play well together. And the same problem is with Towns and Dieng. Obviously it is nice to have 2 potential superstars on the team but it is discouraging that most of the other upside players don't fit well with them. Rubio is completely essential to this team. Unless the Wolves luck into a top rated PG in the draft they won't be upgrading. And they don't need to. I still think it is funny that you think that Martin had any trade value. Even if he matches up with another team then they still need to navigate the salary cap and salary matching rules. It would have been difficult getting a 2nd rd pick back for him that didn't include a similar matching salary.
  10. One would think but Mitchell seemed to obsess about giving up size in the interview and how it wore out the smaller player even mentioning that Towns and Dieng give up quite a bit at C.
  11. I really don't the issue with signing Bastardo to a 3/18 contract. He would be getting paid about the same as Jepsen and a little more than milone. If you need to save money then trade Milone and move May to the rotation. Bastardo might be better than May in the bullpen and May is likely better than Milone. The years really don't both me. The walks really don't bother me. The prospect of Fien in the 7th/8th inning bothers me though.
  12. The interview with Mitchell summed it up. He doesn't want Wiggins guarding the larger SF's across the NBA. That basically leaves them with Prince and Muhammad. He is choosing Prince right now. It would be insane if the Wolves won the lottery from the 5th to 7th spot.
  13. I guess my issue is that the most promising players behind the big 3 don't fit well together. Dieng and Towns shouldn't be playing together and neither should Lavine and Wiggins. Bjelica and Muhammad look like solid NBA players but they might not be starters. Payne looks like a solid 10-15 min/game backup. That means that the Wolves need several key players that aren't on the roster yet. That sounds hard.
  14. That really has nothing to do with trading Plouffe. The few teams that could have traded for Plouffe have addressed 3B and didn't give up much to do so. This was basically one of the worst offseasons to have a player like Plouffe on the trade block. 3B is a really deep position right now.
  15. Great sample size of one. And that one is contending to be a top 5 player of all time. The skepticism as to when he is ready is justified though. At this point he almost too talented to be a complete bust but who knows what he will be. At least a competent starter imo.
  16. Many of the teams had valid reasons to move but many of the mentioned teams had so much history and a strong brand even if they didn't bring in fans (for example the Expos). I thought about listing the Cardinals but I kind of shrugged my shoulders at how much out of state fans cared. They were always kind of bad and afterthoughts in the NFL. The Oilers were kind of fringy also. More obvious examples of this are the Grizzlies, Clippers, Raiders (moving back and forth in CA) and the Rams (both moves).
  17. I think it is a little over-optimistic to expect all players to work out and not be injured. Pitchers could adjust to Rosario and he can't hit enough to be an MLB starter. Park might not be able to adjust to MLB pitching. Kepler probably has the most upside but good prospects flop all of the time. Buxton is almost too talented to not work out but it could happen. The Twins OF could be stacked in a year or two but it is also possible that it is merely decent after a bust or two and a disappointment.
  18. While it isn't a done deal, it appears that the Chargers are on their way to LA. This just seems wrong. Some teams move and it elicits a shrug of the shoulders but it just seems to be wrong for the Chargers not to be in SD. What are some of the other iconic teams that have moved? The moves could have made sense financially or stadium wise but it sucks from a fan standpoint. Football Houston Oilers Baltimore Colts Cleveland Browns NBA Seattle Supersonics Charlotte Hornets - not really comparable to the other teams but my peak interest in the NBA occurred during the Larry Johnson and Alonzo Mourning years. New Orleans Jazz Lakers - had to include MLB Brooklyn Dodgers Montreal Expos Milwaukee Braves NHL Minnesota North Stars - I won't include other hockey teams since I have never followed the sport but I know that their are a few heartbreaking moves
  19. I think Kepler's chance at making the team on opening day are <5% but there is a scenario that exists. If Buxton is headed to AAA then the OF could be a mess. It might be apparent that Santana and the retreads can't cut it and Rosario becomes the CF by default. A combination of not wanting a below avg OF defense at all 3 spots and Kepler looking really good (and ready) could lead to a opening day surprise. I think it is more likely that they go with a retread for a month or two until it becomes painfully obvious but possibly (small chance) not. I think everybody is expected Kepler to regress. The thing about his stats is that he has always had good K:BB ratios. Obviously he won't maintain a 1:1 ratio or BAPIP .359 long term but regressed stats still look very good.
  20. Nolasco, Milone and Stewart for Cargo. Make it happen.
  21. Basically it sounds like my worst fears. The Wolves have 3 good to great pieces and a bunch of other pieces that don't fit with those pieces. I still hold out hope for Bjelica being a solid complementary piece but Mitchell wasn't impressed with him. I guess the season is closing in on the halfway point and we can start getting excited about the lottery. again... awesome...
  22. The problem is that those guys with contracts can't be sent to AAA so the team loses a lot of depth by simply cutting them (or not having them) to make room for Berrios. At some point someone is going to be injured. The Twins aren't putting washed up scrubs in the rotation to block Berrios. Hughes is a season removed from being considered a 2/3. Ervin is at least a 3. Gibson is a fine #3. Milone has gotten #3 results even if his stuff is not exciting. Duffey arguably matched Berrios at AA/AAA and was awesome in the majors for a rookie. It isn't like 2014 Correia, 2015 Pelfrey or Nolasco are expected to be in the rotation this year. I will be the FIRST person to bash the FO if Nolasco is making starts ahead of a healthy Berrios.
  23. Revere's skill set is actually perfect for small ball although the Nats aren't a small ball team either.
  24. I am fairly certain that we can't create a system with 3 players that can't shoot at all and 2 of them don't contribute offensively at all. Ideally the Wolves could find the perfect 3 and D wing to fit the system but they are also looking for an ideal PF and they might have to deal with having Lavine/Wiggins since the other current options are lousy. Or they could at least showcase Lavine as a promising young trade chip if the ideal player ends up on the block.
  25. 5 year offensive numbers Gordon .353 wOBA 123 wRC .809 OPS (both players play in pitchers parks) JUpton .358 wOBA 127 wRC .826 OPS Gordon's defensive value is what has allowed him to be nearly twice as valuable as JUp in WAR. If you want to disregard defense that is fine but all that does is make the two closer overall instead of a massive advantage to Gordon. One other data point in all of this is that a player similar to Gordon (even better at defense though) just got 184M because he is young. Paying 72M for Gordon is not a bad deal at all. And it is only a 4 year deal so he needs to start getting old really quick for it to be a bad contract. It isn't like the Zobrist contract that pays him until he is 40.
