  1. Given the state of our rotation last year, quantity is needed too... I agree that there has to be at least 1 blue chip signing, and like you I'd prefer a middle tier signing, but regardless, all signings need to target upside. That's true but if you spread the money across too many pitchers you end up getting crap at each spot.
  2. Quality over Quantity Throw ins = pedro Hernandez and Eduardo Escobar types. Liriano might have been the 3rd player in the big trade but he was fairly well thought of except he was injury prone. If getting a Liriano type throw in downgraded Meyer to a lesser pitcher then I would be upset.
  3. The problem is that I don't think they are adding new viewers or they are going to be adding new viewers in the future. where are they getting the extra revenue from to pay these ridiculous contracts? Are these deals setting up future bankruptcies in the future? Who was competing with them for these big contracts?
  4. 12-15/yr for one pitcher 5-10/yr for the 2nd pitcher scraps for the 3rd Quality > Quantity
  5. i think it's awesome that we are still arguing about UZR long after BYTO has died. I've seen enough from UZR to feel confident when defensively ranking players as the following (with multiple seasons of data): Excellent Above Average Average Below Average Awful It's clearly not as good as offensive stats but it does give a pretty good idea of a player's talent level. And it is 100x better than using gold gloves or relying on random defensive evaluators that at best get to see all of the players in the MLB a couple of times/season and mostly on TV.
  6. this is a pretty poor argument since it includes all kinds of stuff from ticket sales, concessions, apparel and everything else in addition to TV revenue. I guess I just don't think of many of my friends and family back home making it a priority to make it priority to watch a baseball game on TV after work or staying inside on weekend. And imo it falls far behind the other multimedia choices that people have.
  7. To some extent for the same reason he was .311 hitter. A few diving plays and some easy grounders hit to him and he makes more plays than an average 3Bman. I think the runs saved part of the equation is a little questionable since it's more of a plays made data set though.
  8. Was Valencia really a .311 hitter or was he not? Or don't we know? Isn't that the crux of the issue?
  9. Parmelee might start the season in RF but Hicks or Arcia will end the season there. I can also almost guarantee that one of Mauer/Morneau/Doumit/Willingham/Parmelee will be injured at some point freeing Parmelee to play DH/1B.
  10. I like using multiple seasons of UZR to determine if a player is excellent, above average, average, below average or awful defensively but I have issues with its weighting in WAR equations and I don't like WAR much as a result. It would be great to address the SS issue but it's just not going to happen. The Twins have limited resources to trade or to spend and that needs to focus on starting pitching since that is a far bigger issue than addressing SS longterm. I am hoping that the Twins at least get a guy like Drew, YEscobar or Kelly Johnson to at least give the Twins one competent MI'er instead of a herd of utility players.
  11. This is precisely why you don't do a complete firesale and get rid of everyone that is somewhat old. It's also why the Twins should go after some mid tier FA's this winter. At the same time you try to trade your most valuable players that will be gone in 1-3 yrs to add to the farm system. I really hate how the Royals constantly get brought up as a reason not to rebuild. Despite being terrible and having high draft picks they had terrible farm systems until recently and they have made almost zero competent moves involving MLB players.
  12. I still have my BYTO ringer but it's in a closet at home. I did wear it to a couple of Twins games several years ago.
  13. I really don't understand why the TV contracts are exploding. I didn't think a lot of people watched baseball and I would have guessed that it would go down as multimedia keeps expanding.
  14. Of course some prospects won't pan out but the mid 90's Twins never had talent like the current Twins system. Maybe it won't work but farm systems set up long playoff runs. I think it's a little early to write the Royal's great system off. It's taking longer than SOME expected but that is an organization that has a lot of talent. Unfortunately none of the young pitchers have worked out.
  15. I rolled my eyes a little at the tiresome Hoey mention and then you properly debunked that BS argument that some have made. Great article all around.
  16. I think I like Gibson more than most. I'm not against Rosario but I really like the prospects ahead of him. I could easily understand an argument for Meyer between #3 and #7. I don't really understand #8 since Berrios and Kepler have far more question marks and have proven less than Meyer. What is even more exciting is that the Twins will probably land a college pitcher with the #4 in next year's draft and that pitcher will probably rank #3 on this list although Hicks, Arcia and Gibson should hopefully graduate. 1. Sano 2. buxton 3. Hicks 4. Arcia 5. Meyer 6. Gibson 7. Rosario 8. Berrios 9 Kepler a completely different tier below here
  17. This Boras complaint is ridiculous. He's not even in the majors and unless he's on the opening day roster in 2014 he's not going to be a FA for 8 years. let's worry about this Boras thing 8 years from now.
  18. I think sabermetrics would say that Dave Cameron is significantly overrated. And this is coming from someone that understands and uses sabermetrics a lot.
  19. The Twins are going to be bad in 2013 realistically so what he does in 2013 doesn't matter for this particular team. By far their #1 need short term and long term is pitching and if the Twins can land another borderline top 50 prospect then I am all for trading Willy. i would feel a lot more optimistic about the future with the the following set of prospects Meyer another good pitching prospect like Cingrani/Corcino/Delgado Gibson berrios #4 pick which is currently looking like a college pitcher
  20. I don't think Willingham will regress. there's a decent chance that he gets injured again and has very little value at the deadline. And he's the only current Twin that is going to land another legit prospect. Trading the other spare parts on the team will net a pile of Pedro Hernandez's. that's not what the club needs long term.
  21. Willingham will be 34 opening day, is injury prone and is only signed for two more years. given how unlikely it is that the Twins can compete in 2013 I think you trade Willy IF there is a solid deal out there. I would take a 2nd Alex Meyer if teams match up. someone like Delgado, cingrani or Corcino would be a good start. Minor or Hellickson would also work since it would give the Twins a solid starter for 5 years vs a very good hitter for 2.
  22. He's a borderline top 50 prospect so this is a pretty weak Devil's Advocate position.
  23. Of course it would have been nice to get a little more but this is exactly the type of move the Twins need to make to fix the franchise long term. Perhaps Meyer is a bust but you need a lot of good arms in your system to produce good starters. This also gives the Twins a little more room to sign FA's this winter. I think people also need to be realistic about how difficult it is for two teams to exactly match up with needs. The Twins got a borderline top 25 pitching prospect and very few teams are willing to give this up. Very few teams also need a CF'er.
