  2. As long as Mauer's career doesn't spiral downward like Knoblauch's then he's a lock for the HOF. And then he's probably still in. It's better that he stays at C but I don't think it matters as long as he keeps hitting.
  3. Sale was the key and now I'm pretty stacked aside from closers. I'm actually trying to get either of Reyes or Tulo but I would rather not give up everything I have left on the farm. My farm system now consists of Bogaerts, Rosario, Hedges and a bunch of fringe top 100 prospects. Still a solid system but more middle of the pack. Sometime I need to make a list of all of the top prospects that I've traded away. It would be a pretty impressive list even though most of the prospects have fizzled. The only prospects that made it to the majors were Alonso, JWeeks and Parker and I've traded the last two already. Is there a backdoor access to the BYTO archives? About a year ago I had compiled a list of all of my trades and it would be nice to look back in hindsight. I think the only one that looks bad is Dan Haren for Jordan Zimmerman (before he came back from TJ), Mejia (before he had TJ), Singleton and Dwyer. And Haren carried me to 2nd place that year.
  4. I'm saying that the Twins shouldn't be trading away any of the hitting prospects because this organizational strength could easily flip in a couple of years. They don't need to trade for bats but I wouldn't turn down a trade for a non 1B/OF prospect. I think the Span and Revere trades are kind of a guide for value although the Phillies overpaid. Meyer barely squeezes into the top 50 if does while May is probably going to be just outside of the top 100. Those are about as good as it's going to get in a willingham trade.
  5. His contact problem could push BA down to the .250-.260 range. Even with a lot of walks that probably results in a low .700's OPS. A very good player but that's what keeps his prospect helium in check.
  6. I'm all for moving Willingham and Morneau this offseason or at the deadline since they aren't part of the long term Twins but I think people need to control themselves when they think about this overabundance of hitters in the minors. There's only one good MLB hitter (Mauer) on the team aside from Morneau and Willy. Hopefully a few of Parmelee, Plouffe, Hicks and Arcia show that they are MLB hitters this year but this offense could get scary ugly fast. I also think the Twins will be very lucky to get a top 50 prospect for Willingham. Forget about Hultzen.
  7. I think BA has the most content and is also comprised of several different people rather than singular sources at ESPN (Law), BP (Goldstein) or most of the others. Fangraphs, prospect361, minorleagueball and some others are free sites though and it's best to use as many sources as possible when prospecting imo. It should be noted that BA and Sickel's at minorleagueball also publish a book that goes much further than anyone's online content goes including their own site. The books go 20-30 prospects deep (full scouting reports) while there are very few online sites that have more than 10 scouting reports/team.
  8. I would focus on a Willingham for Olt trade also but realistically I don't think Willingham will land a top 25 prospect. This was indirectly mentioned by what kind of pitcher the Twins could get back in a Willingham trade. If I had the choice between a 2 lesser prospects or a much better one then I'll choose the much better one.
  9. I'll make this simpler. The Twins should trade for Olt because he is a top 25 overall middle of the order bat that is MLB ready. I would love to get a top 25 overall pitching prospect but it's not easy to match up exactly on trades like this. And I wouldn't pass this up (if available) just because we have someone that is over 2 years away. I like Plouffe but his defense is also pretty questionable.
  10. Marcum is only a #3 (is that average) yet Diamond, Worley and Gibson are potentially above average? You do realize that Marcum has 3.55 ERA for the last 5 seasons. Haren was obtainable on a 1 yr deal for a relatively minor prospect (similar to KC's deal for Santana). Haren would have made the same amount as Correia and Pelfrey combined (13ish M). marcum is by all accounts available relatively cheap but instead Twins are piling up #4/5's for decent amounts of money.
  11. You know what's out of hand? Constantly bringing up Koskie like it's relevant. Keith Law isn't the only person that thinks Sano won't stick at 3B. Pretty much every scouting report says that he's a good athlete but he'll likely be forced off 3B. Of course you give him every chance to stay at 3B but you also need to prepare for a likely inevitable move. The depth chart at 3B consists of Plouffe, Sano and harrison (even worse at defense). Even MI has more depth in the minors.
  12. The problem is that the Twins still don't have a better than average pitcher and they just keep filling the bottom of the rotation.
  13. Hard to judge though since it's not a competitive team and typically putting a ton of money into FA's doesn't rebuild a team and instead just pushes off rebuilding for a few years. I just wish that he would quit pissing decent money down the drain on the bargain bin type FA's. 14M committed for a pair of back end starters could have went a fair ways towards landing a Jackson, Marcum, or Dempster. Perhaps I'll be shocked and they will also sign Jackson or Marcum but I doubt it. The Twins also could have traded a mid tier relief prospect and landed Haren for about 13M. Haren actually had the chance to be good.
  14. I don't really get the point to signing both Correia and Pelfrey. The Twins needed to go after a #2/3 starter to go with Worley this offseason and instead they signed 2 #4/5 guys (upside) and pissed a little money down the drain. It's pretty clear that JR is doing whatever it takes to avoid tying up future payroll and build internally. It's a good long term plan but the Twins aren't that poor and unless something crazy happens they aren't going to come close to a 90-100M payroll in 2014/2015. And even that payroll is below their means but I understand (and support) that they are rebuilding. So far this offseason's FA's are reminding me of '07/'08 offseason where they had extra money (after the Johan and Torii departures) but shopped in the bargain bin spending 15-20M on guys like Lamb, Everett, Monroe, and Livan. These guys were awful and aside from Lamb they were expected to be awful but they avoided tying up money long term. Perhaps JR will surprise me but I now think these are the 3 pitchers that we were going to add this offseason.
  15. Awesome. Willingham has a career season at age 33 and you think that is worth one the best SS's in the league that happens to be 24 yrs old. This is what I consider delusional.
  16. Debateable with those that have delusions regarding the value of Willingham and Morneau I guess. Offering a top 15 prospect does nothing to close the value gap or the needs that Texas has (MLB needs).
  17. Sano will make room in the OF or 1B when he's ready. it's just unlikely that he'll stick at 3B even though he'll have a another season or two to work at 3B. I'm not sure why the lack of MI prospects was brought up. I'm all for targeting MI prospects also. Schoop is on my list as well as Sardinas and Odor from TEX but Olt is a better prospect than any of them and if I'm trading then I'm trading for the best prospect that I could get. And it's not like the Twins are stacked at 3B. Profar is completely off the table so please stop bringing his name up. Andrus is also unobtainable for the Twins.
  18. Does it matter? the Twins aren't going to beat any of the other teams in the central and that includes the Indians which are pretty bad.
  19. There is no way that Andrus (or Profar) are in play for anything the Twins have to offer. If the Rangers are desperate then perhaps Olt is in play. Olt's a borderline top 25 prospect so it's not like he's mediocre.
  20. Elvis Andrus gets traded for a Justin Upton type player and not a Justin Morneau type player. There should be absolutely no way that the Rangers trade Andrus to the Twins but it has been a strange offseason. I think in the end the Twins end up keeping Morneau until the deadline because he's not going to bring in a good prospect now and he's a very popular player. Optimistically the prospects on the Rangers that you should look at (if the Twins pay half of the salary) are Perez (if the Rangers have soured on him), Alfaro (toolsy catcher), Odor (toolsy MI), Sardinas (toolsy SS) and Buckel.
  21. I like the trade for Name and don't really understand for Dave. It could work out if Beckett has a nice bounce back season but even then he doesn't seem like a guy that will bring in a prospect haul. I DO NOT TRUST Rodney.
  22. There's getting good value for your money and there's being a miser. I don't have any problem with trying to get good value but I think FA is evolving and salaries are going to inflate and teams are going to be taking a lot of players off the market in what looks like big deals. It's possible that the Twins go into next offseason with <50M (possibly <40M) committed and very few options to spend it on then also. At some point you have to spend the money.
  23. they already brought in Correia so there is no reason to dive into the mediocrity dumpster a 2nd time. Go for Marcum, Jackson or possibly Villanueva or stay out at this point.
  24. 1st - Holland was only available when the rangers were trying to sign Greinke. They didn't and now they will keep him. 2nd - It's hard to say whether or not the Rangers would do a Willy/Morneau/Olt trade but I would. No, it's not pitching but it's a really good value and currently the only hope the Twins have at 3B in the next couple of seasons (or longer considering Harrison/Sano play terrible defense) is Plouffe. I would prefer pitching but Olt is a really good prospect. There's also the theory that the Twins could spend more money in FA... tbh - I know there is an extreme pitching need but the Twins offense starts getting a little thin until guys like Buxton, Sano, Rosario, Kepler, etc make the jump from Low A or rk ball. I wouldn't overlook Olt just because of the need for pitching. Perhaps Plouffe could play 2nd. By midseason C - Mauer 1B - Parmelee 2B - Plouffe? SS - ? 3B - Olt LF - Plouffe? CF - Hicks RF - Arcia DH - Doumit
  25. I would have no problem if the Twins went to 5/80 or even 6/90. I think they will have a difficult time spending their available payroll during the next several seasons. There's a good chance that Sanchez could be solid for most of the contract and it seems like there will be a lot of inflation in baseball salaries soon.
