1. I think getting two #3's by 2015 is optimistic.
2. I don't have a problem signing a cheapish bullpen arm to throw into the 6th/7th inning mix but wilson just isn't a fit. I don't think this is a fit for Wilson either. He's probably looking for a one year contract so he can sign a bigger closer contract next year. And I'm almost certain that he would prefer to be on a contender than in the cellar.
3. I think the Shields trade makes them more likely to go after Marcum. They should be going for it now. At the beginning of the offseason I said sign the best pitcher that you can for 3/36 and be done with it. Haren was my choice then but Marcum was my backup plan so I'm okay with this. Right now Marcum and Dempster are the only guys that remotely deserve that kind of money aside from Jackson and Sanchez who should get more.
4. Comparables - neither signed as closer Ryan Madson - 3.5M plus 3.5M in incentives based on games and days on active roster (not the DL) Joakim Soria - 2/8M
5. The Span trade was a good one regardless of this ridiculous trade that the Indians pulled off.
6. Wilson will barely be ready to pitch opening day just like Baker and he's probably going to get similar money. I can see spending that money on Baker but spending it on Wilson makes less sense. It would be better sense than spending it on a guy like Correia though.
7. As I quote Pat Roycy, if Correia is worth $10M, then Grienke is easily worth $147M. If Correia is worth $10M then I am easily worth $1M.
8. A loogy and a formerly big name prospect that has crashed back to earth do nothing to change the trade. Even if you are down on someone that doesn't mean that you trade them for a utility IF'er, a loogy and a disappointing 1B prospect. they basically got Dozier, Perkins and Parmelee.
9. So Trevor Bauer is worth nothing.
10. No, it doesn't. Why is San Diego important anyway? he's been in Pitt for 2 years. I'm mostly indifferent to this signing. JR always signs a few washed up vets and there's a chance he might not be horrible. I can forgive him as long as he has another good move or two left this offseason. I'm concerned that he might be hinting that he won't be able to sign a better starter but he did say that he planned on bringing in 3 starters this season. The offseason isn't over yet.
11. How does trading Mauer so they can sign Dempster and Jackson make any sense when they would still have a <80M payroll? The Twins still have 25M this offseason to spend (and they could push that number higher). And there's more money next offseason. There is no reason to trade Mauer to free up money. The problem is whether or not they will spend it and whether or not they ridiculously overpay.
12. It's 12/11 and you've declared the offseason over? Keep up the negativity.
13. I'm not sure if you watched last year but with a couple of injuries or pitchers that bomb the Twins are plugging pitchers in that are far worse. That's the problem with the Deduno/Devries argument. Those guys should be left as a last resort before things get really ugly. I'm not a big fan of this move though but whatever. I doubt they have a 100M payroll this year and I doubt this prevents them from signing anybody. This is my concern also. There aren't that many #3 or better pitchers out there and a lot of teams looking for a starter.
14. This probably won't be considered a decent move ever but I'm rather indifferent. He's a guy that can hold down the #4/5 spot hopefully. the important thing this offseason is getting the #2/3 starter that at least gives the team some resemblance of a starting rotation.
15. I get the first question but the second two are confusing the hell out of me. Are they answers posed as questions? You're tricksy. I don't know why I did that. Vert tricksy.
16. Are you building for 2013 or the future? Getting a pair of average at best 30+ starters for a valuable trade chip hurts the future? If you are going to trade perkins then go after a nice prospect like zach lee or similar?
17. Who knows? Maybe the Royals click next season but I think they will regret this. The problem is that they just haven't been able to even get their pitching prospects to the majors to disappoint. their offensive core weren't on fire last year but they have a lot of talent in the majors (aside from Frenchy). Gordon, Butler, Hosmer, Mous, Alcides, Perez and Cain is a pretty solid core that will be around for awhile. If these hitters make progress and they find a few guys (Ervin, Davis, Duffy, Paulino) that can be solid MOR starters they could make a big jump next year. More likely this will be the defining trade that ends Moore's run as a GM similar to Bavasi's Bedard deal.
18. Of course Dave had to trade down to the pick right in front of me so I'm going to have to keep quiet about my favorites in the draft. Psuedo is sitting in an interesting spot although I liked Dave's original spot at #6. Imo Dave traded down because #12 is a semi reasonable spot to pick a Twin not named Buxton. I'm not mentioning guys that I think will be available on purpose but here are the guys that I think will be gone when I pick. Correa, Buxton, Zunino and Gausman - no doubt top picks Soler - I think he's that good Zimmer/Giolito - someone will still take both of them I think Puig - the Dodgers spent stupid money on him but scouts don't seem to think he was worth it Otani - will he sign? Almora The next wave that I think I'll be in happily - Dahl, Fried, Russell, Seager, Wacha and even Berrios. that's 16 deep so I think I'll be happy with my pick and I'm sure I can add a few more names to this list.
19. I really fail to understand why the Twins would be trading a valuable piece like Perkins for two old starters that are almost FA's. The Twins should pick up a guy like them but they shouldn't be trading a valuable piece for them.
20. It's abominable because they will open the season with a 15M payroll once they trade Nolasco. I would disagree that they didn't get talent in return though. Marisnick and Nicolino aren't far behind May and Meyer imo. And they also rid themselves of Buehrle's contract. I've made an argument before that in addition to a luxury tax, baseball also needs a salary floor. If you don't spend X then your revenue sharing is reduced and/or eliminated. There is absolutely no excuse that Loria should get any of the revenue sharing for fielding an absolutely awful baseball team.
21. It's kind of humorous how people are surprised that rebuilding teams trade veterans and are hesitant to sign aging and declining veterans to long contracts.
22. Questionable defense and questionable bat? What's not to dislike? He just isn't good enough to be throwing a top 100 (almost top 50) prospect at.
23. I would trade Perkins for a good young starter/prospect. I would not trade perkins in any part of a Capuano/Harang/Lilly/Gordon trade.
24. he's not going to get 4 or 5 years (unless things just get stupid on all of the contracts) because he is injured every year. He should make good money each season but I can't see anyone giving him more than 3 yrs because of the injury risk.
25. I disagree with Meyer and May being fringe #3's but I think that some have overrated May and Meyer. Imo they have good upside but they aren't likely to reach it (esp May).
