  1. Santana is kind of an interesting guy. His xFIP has stayed pretty much constant all these years while his Fastball dropped 3-4 mph (but his breaking stuff and change stayed pretty much constant, so I think that this might be a mechanical issue thing maybe.) I don't know. He will be 31. He is a lefty. Here is my thinking about next season: a. for the Twins to compete they need at least 2 #1 #2 types in the rotation and a #3 (so you can let Diamond be a number 4 and deal with 5+). b. those guys are not to be found unless they get creative about trading and willing to trade prospects and they get lucky c. they are probably not willing to do b. (and there are like 3 ifs there), so they better trade the excess fat (Morneau/Span/Willingham/whatever else) for younger players and shoot for 2014-5
  2. ok, Pin it on the Twins. But someone has to be accountable. Who would that be in your mind?
  3. Let me put it this way: I've seen plenty of Kendrick in the minors and majors around here. And there is a very good Twins comparable: Anthony Swarzak. Matter of fact, I think Swarzak has better stuff. Kendrick would be a huge huge mistake.
  4. I hope he does. There should be another question also: Should the Twins' manager and pitching coach be held accountable for letting R.A. Dickey go, while they were planning a season (2011) with Brian Duensing and Nick Blackburn as starters ahead of him?
  5. Here is one of my gripes with some of those lists that are treated as holy grails: Wonder how many times has Sickel seen Rosario and Arcia play (either live or on TV?) And I am not picking on Sickel. Lot's of those lists are the results of bandwagon jumping from good and bad reviews. (Full disclosure: I saw Rosario about the equivalent of one game and Arcia for like 10 games or so.)
  6. BA is (and has always been) biased towards drafted players and against latin american free agents, unless they are can't miss types... So no wonder Pimental and Polanco are not in their lists... And frankly part of the bias here is because they spend a lot of time scouting the US guys as draft prospects and not so many the other guys as July FA signings... That's why they are biased. Seen them more. Plus they are scout-driven so if they went to 2-3 games for the E-Twins and some of these guys had bad days, they would not make their list.
  7. If anything this sound indicate that inclusion in the BA top 100 prospect lists means absolutely nothing other that a nice status as a trade chip. Remember, the Twins were completing in '92. Wonder if they would have won a bit more before the strike that changed everything if they had traded a bunch of those "blue chip prospects" for some established players...
  8. Lets see how long will take the Twins to follow suit
  9. Any ideas if he is wearing contacts or something?
  10. I think that there is domination and there is domination in the minors. Slowey had only one season with WHIP higher than 0.834 (and that was 0.958) And his highest full season ERA in the minor before that call up was 2.12. Slowey's worst seasons would be Hendriks' career seasons and Hendriks is pretty darn good. Small sample size to talk about HRs. ... A good comparable to Hendriks is Frankie Viola who made his debut (like Hendriks) at age 22 and had a full season at age 23. Both of those season were not remarkable and then Frankie got the changeup going and became Frankie. Hope that Hendriks follows that trajectory...
  11. I really think that the middle infield might go 2 ways in 2013: a. let the "kids" (Dozier, Escobar, Florimon,- alphabetical order) fight for 2 starting positions and trade Carroll b. hand Carroll a starting job (heck he is a 2.3 WAR MIF... they have not exactly grown on trees for the Twins) and try to get someone else for the other, while having the "kids" fight for a utility job assumptions: Nishioka is traded to Japan and Casilla is non-tendered (I don't like the latter much, but...) b. makes sense only if the Twins get 2-3 starting pitchers better than Diamond. a. makes sense otherwise.
  12. I am sure that the Twins will look again in the heap pile and find another couple pitchers better than Capps next season (like they did with Burton and Fien this season) I just find it irritating that they are playing him in expense of a prospect or two...
  13. Phillies and Span (and?) for Tyler Cloyd (and?). I wanted the Twins to make that trade in the deadline when Cloyd was still in AAA and flying well below the radar. Got to see him pitch the couple last seasons in Reading and at Lehigh Valley and the guy is legid and the Phillies did not value him because he does not throw 98. Maybe the Twins missed an opportunity here.
  14. Too much... What you are suggesting is a deal better than the one Perkins got. No way the Twins should do this.
  15. Of course. Capps is a proven MLB-closer
  16. Unless the Angels and the Tigers make the postseason, neither should be the MVP. MVP is about value to the team (i.e. helped the team go some place; unlike Cy Young, which is a best pitcher award.) Because the Angels and the Tiggers would have missed the post-season with them or without them. So, it might be between Cano and Beltre, depending on who makes the post-season. That's my take. Maybe baseball needs a best player award like the Cy Young (Call it the Babe Ruth or the Barry Bonds Award ) and then we can have that discussion...
  17. Good stuff (one little note, 'cause some people are kind of sensitive; and I promise I am not gonna start that discussion again : It's always a good ideal when have race questions to use the current official US descriptors of race and ethnicity. Those in the box in the bottom right of the link here)
  18. Got to add another name to the list and makes absolutely no sense: Matt Capps. Yes, the Twins sent him there to take valuable time from the young players (like he would throw another pitch in a Twins' uniform....) Total nonsense.
  19. A lot will depend on what happens: a. At the MLB-level with the manager and the coaches and there need to be changes after 2 seasons of 99 and 90+ losses and the way the Twins' pitching has been. b. with Rantz. He is long overdue for retirement (will be 75 before the season starts) c. with Ryan. Very disappointing season, doing nothing at the deadline and assembling that pitching staff. His job is probably on the line despite what Jr is saying publicly If those things than need to happen, happen, there will be wholesale changes... otherwise, most of these guys are tenured in the organization
  20. OK. For the record (whatever that might be) : - I do like Nick Blackburn as a person. And in more than one occasions I wrote about his unlikely assent to the majors (he was the guy on the bike then). - That said, I still do not believe that he belongs to a major league rotation (and I said that since before the Twins signed him to that contract) but he might actually find his way into a pen and be very effective. He never relieved in the majors. I saw him throw 94 as a starter, so he can dial it up (think Perkins, and, sorry Glen, Perkins was a worse pitcher as a starter.) - Big ahem and political correctness here, but I feel that it is necessary because there were some quotes attributed to Nick. Here is how it goes: Please folks, take these with a huge grain of salt because Nick is a great guy but he is not the sharpest knife on the block. /Done and over and out
  21. that would be Tyler Robertson. And he is about the size of Jared Allen. Feel free to tell him that in person. He is a nice guy though
  22. This is kind of an interesting comparison... Couple of the most tenured managers out there. One was an all star with 13 years experience in the majors and the other was a utility player with 3 years in the majors. One of them kinda adjusted and changed the people around him. The other one did not (just shuffled their chairs.) Both of them are old and tired, let them rest in peace and let them make pizza and hardware commercials.
  23. Well, I suppose it depends on what your definition of earned is. But for a rational reason, conventionally, Deduno has a better record (6-4 to 5-5), a better ERA (3.84 to 4.11), allowed fewer runs per nine innings (3.96 to 4.95), allowed fewer home runs per nine (1.0 to 1.6) and hits (7.4 to 9.0). The stats you reference (WHIP and K/BB), it mainly skews to De Vries's side because of Deduno's egregious amount of walks (as referenced in the article). Combine that with what I believe I had presented a superior stuff, I say the scales are tipped in Deduno's favor. Now, I am not suggesting anyone has earned a spot but if I had to rank them, and this is nothing against De Vries (who has pitched very well) but I put Deduno ahead of De Vries. So Deduno has better RA9, better winning %, better quality start % than Diamond (and equal HR%) and better K/9. Do you put him ahead of Diamond too? If not, why?
  24. Here are a couple of things (and, no, I am not gonna mention my Fire Gardy and Ryan mantra) : - National writers unless they are specialized, they do not know prospects in every organization other than the top ones - Most teams, if they are creative, they can turn top hitting prospects into top pitching prospects. All it requires is a mentality of "yes, it is ok to trade OF prospects if you have more than you can use". This will be part of the challenge for these Twins
