  1. Morneau in his MVP season was a 3.5 WAR guy. same in 2009. In 2010 he was a 5 win guy before he got hurt. last season he was below replacement level, this season he has been 1.1 WAR player or so. Might finish with 1.5 Last season in 21 games of every day play Parmelee was an 1.3 WAR player. Also in Rochester he proved sustained success if he plays every day. So it is ridiculous to pay someone 14 million to get the same level of production as you get from a minimum wage guy, if you have as many holes as the Twins do. A $14 million a year first baseman is a luxury for a team who have lost 99 and is on pace for 95, two years in a row. They Twins need pitching. Morneau and his $ relief will be able to do that. And there is a ready replacement in line. As far as Dunn goes, the White Sox have been handing out some really awful contracts (and Dunn is not alone). Why should the Twins do that?
  2. You can get more if you search: Leonel Zazueta beisbol Here is a write-up from February of 2011 when he was just 16, titled "A golden prospect"... (Must just turned 18). My Spanish is getting crusty but here is the basics: Pretty much the biggest prospect in his area. Was linked heavily to the Yankees. Short and Stout for a 16 year old. (5'10"ish and 190ish) His FB was around 92 back then and he though he can do better. His nickname for some reason is "Witch" (which could be the equivalent of "Wizard" in English). He has been an outfielder as well and is pretty good with glove (the Spanish word for a "fielder" is the same as for "gardener". Go figure) He signed into that academy right then. Of course, he is also described as a "Diamond in rough"... Other tidbit from here and there: Selected at the Mexican National team for 15-16 year olds.
  3. I am not a fan of Parmelee playing the outfield. At this point I can see an OF of Willingham/Revere/X/Mastroianni. Let the ones who you add to the 40-man next season (Arcia/Hicks) battle it out. If nothing goes, I am fine with Carson having a shot too. The OF is the least of my worries. If they do not get 2 good starters one way or another, you might as well play Doumit out there. Part of the problem with this team the way it is, is that they have a few DHs (Willingham, Plouff, Doumit, Parmelee) slated to be on the field. And that's ok if you are not going anywhere.
  4. Sano is just one year older than Buxton and he is mashing at 2 levels higher than Buxton, while Buxton is having a .750 OPS. Just cannot rate him higher than Sano. At this point, Sano has a couple of proven tools. Buxton is all about potential
  5. This is pretty good stuff. A few comments: - Span has to go. He has proven that all over again. Sell High. I hope he plays a bit so his off-season value can be as high as the trade deadline value was. - Check the K/9 of Tyler Robertson. They is no way you get rid of the best strikeout pitcher in a team who does not have many. - I have hard time with the Twins signing NL pitchers. For some reason NL pitchers do not translate in AL. (Sanchez and Greinke last couple examples, Marquis, Peavy, the list goes on and on and on...) - I don't mind Baker as a number 2 (if he is healthy) And he is long tossing which is a good thing - This team needs a young ace. Trade whatever you have not named Sano, Arcia, or Rosario (you cannot trade 2012 draft picks) and get him. Even if that means Gibson/Hicks/Span as a package.
  6. Extending Morneau will not only continue blocking Parmelee who has a small window for the Twins to see what he can do in the majors before Sano is ready, but it also takes away a potential decent starter that the Twins can get by trading him this off-season. This team does not need to extend thirty-somethings. Look at what the Rays have been doing with their old men, and whether they have been competing or not.
  7. I think that Diamond could be a 3rd starter. His numbers this year show that. Law is a scout type. I bet his opinion of Brad Radke was the same (bottom of the rotation starter.) Just some pitcher pitch better than their stuff (ask Mr Maddux) and Diamond (not that am comparing him to that) has been doing it this season. Will he sustain the success? Maybe. But compared to the ones (DickNBert) who are calling him an "Ace", Law is closer to the reality.
  8. It is an interesting story. And traffic back and forth from the independents to affiliates baseball has increased it seems this season. Twins' very ex-own Luke Hughes was on his way to Independent ball after cut by the As before he signed with Toronto... One thing I might disagree with: I don't think any 28-year old belongs to AA. But I like the Twins signing independent league star players better than signing washouts (like they did in the past and less this season) for Rochester. Colabello would look good in Rochester (but Burroughs for some reason has been ahead of him). And he might make it to the majors; Watkins did after all
  9. True. Most AAA ballparks are around 10000 people but the attendance is not. If they pack a 7000 seat stadium and have adequate standing room and glass seating, they will do ok. Most people these days unfortunately do not sit and watch baseball games.
  10. And will start Saturday Because it was not mentioned before
  11. Agreed. The other thing that comes in play with an A team in the Twin Cities is the distance from other ballparks that may necessitate flying. And I hope that if the Twins buy a MiLB club and move it to the Cities, it would be the AAA team and not the A team. Having a AAA team close makes a ton of difference. I can see them buying Vegas (or even the Tuscon club that is drawing a A level like 2,889) and moving it up there. The 2 year agreement with Rochester gives them that option.
  12. And Stop Sign Scottie third base coach again?
  13. I think that the original question was about what some of us do... repost content on the blog area here, which we own the copyright and have preciously posted on our own sites. I don't think that you all would have an issue with that because there are no copyright violations Same way Twinscentic re-posts articles between here and the Strib.

  15. Originally published at The Tenth Inning Stretch ---- Here is this week's installment: When Nick Blackburn was put on waivers this week, there was some confusion about that meant. Blackburn and Nishoka did not get Designated For Assignment, they got outrighted. There are four types of waivers in baseball, all explained really well here (this is a must read and bookmark link) :[PRBREAK][/PRBREAK] Trade Waivers, Waivers for the purpose of granting a player his unconditional release (DFA), Outright Waivers and Option Waivers. The first and last kind are revocable, while the other 2 are irrevocable. The difference between DFA and Ouright waivers is that if a veteran (Blackburn is that and Nishioka is not) refuses, in both cases he becomes a free agent, but in a DFA situation the team in on the hook for his contract while in Outright Waivers, if he refuses assignment he loses what is owed to him. You can find all the transactions by the Twins' Minor League affiliates last week here. Tom Powers of the Pioneer Press is on a personal quest to find the scout who gave the thumbs up to the Twins to sign Tsuyoshi Nishioka. He also proposed some resolution, but leaves out door number three, which is exactly what the Twins are doing right now: Having discussions with Japanese teams to assume his contract. This is a great interview of Liam Hendriks by Minor League Ball's John Sickels. Hendriks admits that he has changed his delivery mechanics "several times this season", talks about his pitches and ponders why he has been so effective in AAA and not quite so much in the Majors, yet. Miguel Sano was the first draft pick in the Dominican Winter Leagues. He will play for his hometown Esrellas Orientales. The wife of a Twins' player wrote a guest blog here and she keeps her own full time blog here. Lee County Commissioner Ray Judah was defeated in a primary vote (link to a Dave St. Peter tweet). Not certain what that means for the future of the Twins there, since the county approved improvements in the Twins' Spring Training facilities and Hammond Stadium, which made the Twins renew their lease for 30 more years. Not sure whether papers were signed (I suspect so) but this is an intereasting story line to follow... And apparently this article in the Fort Myers paper, indicates that indeed there might be issues because the winner in the primary is lobbying against baseball spending and breaking the lease. Picture day for the Twins a week ago and a Matt Capps sighting. Top row to the left number 55. He looks like he gained a few because of the inactivity. Speaking of rehabing (or not) Twins' pitchers on the DL, Carl Pavano's fastball is sitting at mid 80s, which is not very good for the Twins' prospects to get something for him this August or for his prospects to continue playing baseball next season. Here is an interesting article about the Twins' A level affiliate Beloit Snappers' pitching coach Gary Lukas. Meanwhile, Beloit is the worst Twins' affiliate as far as attendance goes. Another killer article by Tyler Mason on food and major league vs the minors. Here is an interesting article that, among other things, lists what the Twins did when they moved from an air-conditioned environment to Target Field to battle hot and humid days. With the Twins looking more and more likely to get another high pick in the 2013 MLB draft, apparently, according to Baseball America the draft is pretty deep in high school Left Hand Pitchers, which is always desirable. One particular Twins' outfielder would not only be happy to move to the infield, it is where he played mostly before he became a pro. Also he was exclusively an infielder his first professional season. It seems that the Twins are looking for help at high places. This is great work looking at Twins contracts, projected payrolls, Options of minor league players, rule 5 draft exposure and related topics. Looks like Ron Gardenhire found his next shortstop. If you wonder what some major leaguers do during rain delays, check this out. And a certain Twins' player has been claiming falsely that he was his High School's mascot. And, no, it was not Drew Butera who was a professional clown for a while. Twins' product of the week is the Minnesota Twins Therma Base Hoodiehttp://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=biowriters&l=as2&o=1&a=B007V9B8CC. Because Winter Is Cominghttp://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=biowriters&l=as2&o=1&a=B007HJ84ZK The parting shot today brings us to happier times in the Twins' land. Spring training. Last week of March. The team is ready to get up North hopeful for a new season with the slate wiped clean. Tabula Rasa. Rick Anderson is pitching batting practice to a group of Twins' infielders and catchers not in that days' lineup and he is using what it looks like a four-seamer, and not his signature two-seamer, grip. Happy days. This has been a long season. Spring training 2013 is (almost) around the corner. Hope Springs Eternal. Just about 190 days left until Spring Training 2013. Go Twins!
  16. Speaking of the MWL affiliation changes, I think it will be interesting to see the attendance numbers (which indicate at least fan loyalty to the local team) . Data from here and about a week old. (Average home game attendance for 2012 is listed) Dayton Dragons 8,514 Fort Wayne TinCaps 5,662 Kane County Cougars 5,375 Lansing Lugnuts 5,035 West Michigan Whitecaps 4,940 Great Lakes Loons 3,520 Lake County Captains 3,517 Quad Cities River Bandits 3,485 Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 3,446 Bowling Green Hot Rods 3,359 Peoria Chiefs 2,767 South Bend Silver Hawks 2,663 Cedar Rapids Kernels 2,291 Clinton LumberKings 1,570 Beloit Snappers 981 Burlington Bees 862 I highlighted the team in play. There is huge variability in fan loyalty there... (and infrastructure as well) So there is a pecking (or picking) order.
  17. Sweet Jesus are you kidding me? Ryan should have traded him at the deadline... huge mistake.
  18. I knew you would bring up overall stats but the reason why I asked if you watched him pitch is because he was a much different pitcher after the complete game against the Sox. His velocity dropped and his command wasn't the same. He reportedly had bad bullpen sessions prior to his last 3 starts and it showed on the mound which tells me that he was already hurt. Much like Pavano they kept running him out there. Take a look at first 3 games. 21.1 innings 2.95 ERA WHIP under 1 and a K/BB of 3. Keep in mind this was against the Blue Jays, Tigers and White Sox. I'm not saying he is a guarantee but I think you have to give him a long hard look when he's 100% OK. It makes sense then. (but his velocities have been consistent throughout his career) If he will accept another minor league contract. He will be a MiLB free agent after this season. I would not mind giving him September (if healthy) and 2013 Spring Training to win a job (but I hope that the Twins would really get 2 pitchers better than Diamond, so that would make Diamond number 3 and talking about #4 and #5 competition here...)
  19. A couple of interesting quotes from Shipley's article. Really good stuff (and emphasis mine) : and down a little more A couple of things are really scary here: - First of all he was hurt since ST (Like Baker - pretty much but different part of his body) and they kept trotting him around so basically giving up on every fifth game. - This whole attitude that if something is hurt because of a repetitive motion and hurts while you are repeating that motion, if you keep doing it will hurt less, is Medieval. Like if you are running barefoot on gravel I am sure that it will hurt less at some point. Eventually. Keep doing it son... it builds character. This goes beyond the medical staff. It shows front office and pitching coach and manager attitudes as well.
  20. I think I probably missed 3 games the whole season. Here is PJ Walter's fangraphs page. You can see that per PitchFX has 3 FBs, a 4seamer, a two-seamer (these average at 88.x) and a cut FB that averages around 85 mph. Also a couple breaking balls and a change. If you look down a bit at his pitch values, you can see that only his slider is a decent pitch. Also he got a K/BB around 1.5, a K/9 around 5.5 and a WHIP at 1.5+ Not that great. I have never seen Hernandez pitch. Cannot say much. Saw Hermsen pitch at Spring Training and, yes, he does not have overwhelming stuff. I saw his FB sit a tad higher than Walters' values in the Twins' gun behind home plate last ST. But Brad Radke never did either and neither does Scott Diamond. (I am not comparing any of these 3 players btw, just giving examples of Twins' pitchers will less than great stuff who had success.)
  21. When? Where? Just wondering. He said something about him (like how well he is doing and he is fulfilling the big expectations they had for him) but really totally diplomatic (I did not detect a hint) when Tom Pelissero asked him on his ESPN 1500 show (6ish PM CDT?) He will need a spot for 2013 anyways (Arcia too). Just hard to see him do that right now, unless Span is well done.
  22. I think that the medical staff screwed up big time this season with (Chronologically) : Zumaya (evaluation when they signed him) Baker Wimmers Capps Pavano Plouffe (I hope I am wrong, but, again...) Here are some fun numbers. The cost of the Twins' 12 highest paid pitchers this February: (in $MM) Pavano 8.5 Baker 6.5 Liriano 5.5 Blackburn 4.75 Capps 4.5 Marquis 3 Perkins 1.55 Burton .75 Zumaya .85 3 at .5 Total $37.4 M $ wasted for medical reasons: 20.35 or 54.4% $ wasted for bad contracts (Blackburn and Marquis) : 7.75 or 20.7 % Total Money wasted for medical reasons and bad contracts about 75% So these Twins threw away 3/4 of what they spend for their 2012 pitching staff... How can a team not suck if they do that?
  23. Seth, I really know that for some reason you are high on Manship, but he has been worse that Blackburn in any of the 3 chances he got to pitch in the majors. Out of options in 2013. I think we can pretty much say that he is not in the Twins' plan for 2013. Also, the same with Walters. Horrible peripherals, horrible 88 mph FastBall etc. Matter of fact, I'd rather see them add BJ Hermsen to the 25 man roster and have him start a couple of games instead of Walters and Manship who are not going anywhere in 2013. Hermsen might make himself part of the equation next season and he needs to be added to the 40-man next season. And doing this this September instead nor they use any option neither his clock starts. Or Pedro Hernandez. He should be in the equation as well, maybe ahead of Hermsen. But no Manship. (and no Walters either.) At this point, Manship is out there with Gray and Blackburn, IMHO. (and speaking of, DFA Gray and Free Anthony Slama where we are at it)
  24. That was so easy to see coming from miles away. Capps is done too btw...
  25. In his recent interview with John Sickels, Hendriks admitted a couple of interesting things about his stint with the Twins' to begin the season: he tried to finesse too much (in so many words) and abandoned what made him successful (getting after hitters) and he changed his delivery mechanics many times and returned to the original back in Rochester. It will be a good chance to show what he can do. I hope they get Vasquez up there as well in September. Still 2 spots open on the 40-man. Here is an interesting fact about Vasquez: Last time he was a full-time starter was in 2007 (he was a swingman the next season in PCL) with Mobile in the Southern League. His numbers there were pretty good. Actually very similar to his composite numbers this season in Interantional League. I think that he is one of these guys that will be a MiLB free agent next season and he is out of options so the Twins need to figure out what they have in him as well...
