  1. Congrats guys! Wishing you 10 million soon
  2. ok, here it goes: Mike is 4-4 tonight. Here comes another CF controversy
  3. Yeah. And it is because there are apples and oranges and people (like what you are doing up there) try to compare them. Big big picture: There are a couple types of "stats": Rate stats (things that usually divide by something - think PAs, IP etc) like BA, OBP, ERA, WHIP and cumulative stats (things that add, like RBIs, R, K, etc.). Batting average (like mph in your car) is a rate stat. WAR (like total miles in a trip or what the odometer of your car shows) is a cumulative stat. They both have their uses but you cannot compare them against each other. WAR is awesome for figuring things like belonging into the hall of fame after a long career but sucks for week to week comparisons. It is all about context and appropriate use. (and doing a bit of homework...)
  4. You are missing something. Society for American Baseball Research SABR aka "Saber" In addition to having members who create and evangelize a whole bunch of analytic measures aka "advanced metrics", they have members who do a ton of old fashion research on things like the origins of the game, obscure historic feats, obscure independent teams of lore and all topics baseball.
  5. Originally published at The Tenth Inning Stretch ----- It is really wonderful to see professional baseball players to be good corporate citizens and invest in their communities, appreciating what they did for them in their earlier steps on the way to becoming stars. From the Twins' world, local Minnesotans, Joe Mauer and Glen Perkins have donated a lot of their money and time to several local causes. But they never had a team named after them. A third Twins' lefty just did. LHP Brian Duensing, a graduate of Millard South at Omaha, Nebraska (the place where he met his wife as well), has donated a large sum of money to his local High School Legion team to be used for uniforms and baseball-related expenses. In return, the team will be named the 52s (his uniform number) in his honor. Always good to see the players of your favorite team do the right thing. Congratulations to Brian Duensing! http://mlb.mlb.com/images/2011/02/24/bFlRh7Za.jpg

  7. Chicken or egg situation: Unless broadcasts incorporate more modern statistic measures, the "casual" fans will not get familiar with them and they will be foreign to them. I have issue with DickNBert using crappy measures (like "quality starts", "batting average", "RBI", "holds", "ERA", "runners stranded") and treating them like gospel. I suspect that part of the lack of usage of advanced measures by DickNBert is their unfamiliarity with them, thus the sour grapes... I do not understand how a pitcher's velocity drop during a game or release point inconsistency (both "advanced measures") are "difficult to grasp by the average fan". Pretty easy notations for everyone methinks.
  8. That's good stuff. As far as 2016 goes, I would keep Deduno and Diamond off that list, btw And I would add Florimon instead of Dozier. Color me impressed. Kepler, Harisson, and a handful of relief pitchers from the 2011 and 2012 drafts will be there too. Also I suspect that there will be 2-4 veteran and/or not infusions in the roster and maybe a college kid from the 2014 draft in there. I think that the Twins can win the Central next season if they play it smart (and get rid of certain older players) and if 3-4 pitchers currently at AAA and AA develop the remainder of the season and get rotation spots next season. I think that a Baxendale, Gibson, Meyer (alphabetically), Worley (better) and Diamond/Correia rotation might make this a competative team, but the first 4 need to improve between now and April 2014 and the ones who are running the team (hopefully new people) trust them enough to go with them. I'd also suspect that late 2014 will be the ETA of both Sano and Rosario and late 2015 the ETA of the kids who are in Cedar Rapids right now. And Mauer will be the first baseman (and his brother the third base coach)
  9. Indeed. Add Morneau and Willingham to the equation, and there is plenty of playing time for both Parmelee and Arcia. And if Herrmann continues to hit, trade Doumit as well.
  10. Including their best pitcher, Steve Gruver...
  11. I just don't get this. Hicks aside (injuries happen,) the Twins have plenty of replacement level CF depth. Lamenting about the loss of 3 of those (Mastroianni, Benson and Ramirez, the latter not really a CF) while having Thomas, Richardson, Pettit and Morales still around, does not make much sense. Do the Twins have 2 starting CFs like they did last season? No. Was that an uber luxury in a 99+96 loss team? Yes. It will be fine. If Thomas does not work, get Richardson until Hicksie is healed or Mastroianni healthy (and Hicksie is not exactly hitting the cover off the ball) and call it a day. You can plug any of those guys and have pretty much the same results. CF is not much of the problem in this team. Really. If Correia is your best SP, you are doomed even if Kirby were the Centerfielder. This is like someone with terminal stage cancer complaining about a hangnail.
  12. No. In addition to being the first serious test for a hitter (A+ is a pitcher's league), it is a huge PR issue. And Fort Myers is a Twins' town.
  13. I'd rather see Romero play third than Carroll these days. Romero was a highly regarded prospect and was put on the 40-man roster as a 22-y.o 3 seasons ago. He finally got it together last season. If his house did not burn down last off-season and had his paperwork and made it to ST, he would have fought for a spot on the roster. Good to see him hit again.
  14. They waited until the half of the season was over for Fort Myers (& they clinched a spot in the postseason btw.) A+ All Star break (Now) and not MLB Happy to see these guys in AA. The Rock Cats are going to Reading this month, so I think I will be there more than once. Just hope that Meyer is up and running by then...
  15. This will not happen even in video games
  16. Nope. Signing him would get rid of the likes of Clete Thomas, Antoan Richardson, Chris Pettit and Jordan Parraz.
  17. The easiest position to play is second base, not corner OF, not 1B, not 3B.
  18. Until Buxton can do what he does now at Fort Myers, Sano is the better prospect.
  19. Re: the alleged 6/2 deadline: I do not buy it, because apparently Clete was mucho surprised when he got called up and was totally unprepared. Were there a deadline, his bags would had been packed for one place or another.
  20. The particular writer does not follow the Twins nor cares about the Twins. He (like the town he represents) cares only about their AAA team, no matter the affiliate. He was one of the leading voices in the Anti-Twins campaigns in Rochester the past few seasons... Thus, his opinion about what is good for the Twins (vs. Rochester) should be taken with a grain of salt the size of the Dead Sea.
  21. Danny Lehmann is very good defensively, but the only catcher in the organization with a lighter bat than Butera's and soon to be 28. At this point, he is below Eric Fryer (same age but can hit a little bit and run a little bit) in the (AAA) depth chart. In any future C discussion Matt Koch should be included.
  22. UZR (and thus UZR/150) needs 3 years or data to be significant. Good reading here. For shorter samples +/- and DRS are probably slightly better, but not immune to peaks and valleys. So give Hicksie a couple more years before you bring up UZR.
  23. Juan Fransisco can hit MLB RHP FBs and mistakes. That's it. He can hit AAA stuff, but not lefties even there. And he is a worse third baseman on the field than Plouffe. I just have a hard time see it happening. Allegedly Atlanta is having trade talks for him at this point.
  24. I think that Ramirez is coming back, but Thomas deserves it and Romero had a really unfortunate string of events (I thought that he will be fighting for a starting job in the Spring before his house and birth documents burned) but he will be up sooner than later. I saw both Olmedo and Richardson play and been totally unimpressed. Escobar is much better than Olmedo and other than speed pretty much every other OF (including Thomas) is better than Richardson (his fielding tool is not as good as many would think.) So if not Ramirez (and this team needs a righty) then Thomas.
  25. The other thing that needs to be added to the equation is that about half of the players selected after round 12 or something (and that includes college seniors who sign) do not sign, and they usually wait to get drafted higher. With the hard slots now, this percentage will be higher.
