  1. Randy Johnson is in a different stratosphere than Morris and the others mentioned here. Same era, but dominant, unlike Morris. There are 38 pitchers between Randy Johnson and Morris. And there are 24 pitchers between Morris and the closest Hall of Famer (Jim Palmer.) And, yes, Gooden and Viola (and Wells and Stieb) were true Aces (unlike Morris) in Morris' time but they are not in the Hall as well.
  2. Wood had that one season at Rancho Cucamonga and several good but not great seasons elsewhere. That location and the California League are tricky. IIRC Dallas McPherson and Mike Napoli as well put monster numbers there. Other than that one season, Wood could not crack .300 isoP again. Even at the PCL. Sano cracked .300 isoP with 3 different teams in 3 different leagues (and not so much hitter leagues like the Eastern and FSL...)
  3. ...it is not happening. Same with that Kubel 16 (or 1) and the Hughes 38 (I will be wearing my Hughes jersey at the Fort anyways...) The Twins have announced all the uniform numbers for their 40-man roster as well as the Spring Training invitees. The full list is here. They did not do any favors to Buxton & Sano either.
  4. Wrong questions T or F: Ozzie Smith ranks first among short stops in WAR (which takes account both offense and defense). That's why he is and should be in the HOF.
  5. Back to that comparison with Charlie Hough: Their rate stats (and total IP are extremely similar; a refresher: ) Morris: 3.90 ERA, 1.296 WHIP, 5.8 K/9, 1.8 K/BB (3824 IP) Hough: 3.75 ERA, 1.302 WHIP, 5.6 K/9, 1.4 K/BB (3801 IP) Hough was a reliever and a closer in the first part of his career with the Dodgers and starter with the Rangers. Here are their 10 highest single season IP totals: Morris: 293.7, 267, 266, 261.3, 257, 250, 249.7, 249.3, 246.7, 240.7 Hough: 285.3, 266, 252, 252, 250.3, 230.3, 228, 218.7, 204.7, 199.3 Still in the ballpark and Hough pitched in some crappy teams, which meant early exits.
  6. Roberto Alomar Jay Buhner Jose Canseco Shin-Soo Choo Carl Crawford Rafael Furcal Luis Gonzalez Jose Guillen Todd Hundley et al. Had TJ surgery and recovered pretty nicely. Lets hope that this is nothing as far as Sano goes.
  7. According to this logic, the Twins should be set in 2014, since they are loaded with 4 "Aces": Nolasco: Opening Day starts (3: 2008, 2009, 2013) Pelfrey: Opening Day starts (1: 2011) Worley: Opening Day starts (1: 2013) Correia: Opening Day starts (1: 2011)
  8. Interestingly enough, the closest comparable from his time in ERA, WHIP, K/9 and K/BB is this guy: Morris: 3.90 ERA, 1.296 WHIP, 5.8 K/9, 1.8 K/BB (3824 IP) Mystery Pitcher: 3.75 ERA, 1.302 WHIP, 5.6 K/9, 1.4 K/BB (3801 IP) Eerily similar numbers. Is Charlie Hough a Hall of Famer?
  9. No such a thing They use DH instead of 10
  10. Kenny Rogers (who was a Minnesota Twin for exactly as long as Morris was) and got a single vote had higher career WAR than Morris. Did not see many cries from the Twin Cities crowd there. Brad Radke had a higher career WAR than Morris. And he was a Twin for life. Did not see many cries there either. The two former Twins who should be in this large inclusive hall are Jim Kaat and Tony Oliva, not the Tiger Jack Morris. And before I forget: The Hall is not "without Jack Morris". There are memorabilia of that game 7 in the Hall. Which is the way it should be because that was one of the best games ever played. This does not mean that Jack Morris is one of the best to ever play the game and should be inducted to the player section. There is a difference.
  11. Too early and they will add players, but here is mine : Hicks CF Dozier 2B Mauer 1B Arcia RF Sano 3B Willingham/Kubel DH Plouffe LF Pinto C Escobar SS
  12. Phil Miller does not know that Aaron Thompson is a lefty, apparently.
  13. Kubel will likely be the opening day DH. I will take what Miller said re: Bartlett with a huge grain of salt; it's his own assumption. Ryan was quoted to say something like 'nobody has seen Bartlett play for a year and a half and we'll see what he can do'. BTW, in the same piece he also lists Aaron Thompson as a "right hand reliever" (which is wrong & disappointing).
  14. Jack Morris was not the highest paid player in 1991. He was not even the highest paid pitcher in 1991. He was the highest paid AL pitcher. That said, comparing the MacPhail Twins of 2 World Championships to the Ryan Twins of misery followed by almost good enough to misery, and the methods of the 2 GMs, does not make much sense.
  15. Santana is in the high minors (AAA) and on the 40-man roster, but he is not much of a prospect. I think Escobar is next in line for the SS position.
  16. Not quite. He is stripped off his BBWAA credentials (which open the doors to every ballpark.) He can still get press credentials but needs to get them directly from his workplace and from each team. Plenty of press people who cover baseball and are not BBWAA members.
  17. I agree that stability at short (and at second) helps the team defensively tremendously. But: a. the Twins had an extremely stable IF last season. That did not take them many places. b. Define "reliability" please. Florimon is a tad more reliable than Butera with the stick and he was 4th in errors committed in the majors (and second in the AL) at SS last season.
  18. Meyer is pretty close to a right handed Randy Johnson, if anything
  19. No way There is about 25% chance that Sano becomes the next Chris Davis, 25% chance he becomes the next Miguel Cabrera, 25% chance he becomes the next Harmon Killebrew and 25% chance that he is better than them all. He is that good. Already better than Brandon Wood or Dean Palmer ever were. Chris Davis is his floor.
  20. Sano will be much better player than Beltre. The above is a no-brainer situation, just like the Mauer/Pierzynski or the Morneau/Mientkiewitz situation. Sell high on the veteran and keep the younger better prospect. But you cannot say the same for Kepler. There are 1B and OF prospects of similar age who are better than Kepler, will get to the big leagues earlier and stay longer.
  21. Assuming that Turner will start in Fort Myers, now they have invited all catchers from Fort Myers (minus Grimes & Rodriguez) up. Apparently Turner is ahead of these two in the depth chart...
  22. Just a body I think. They have so many pitchers that they need extra catchers for the workouts. Usually they have more that that, but with 4 on the 40 man, that makes 7.
  23. That's all dandy and fine, until you realize that there are a few back doors to the HOF that let and will let not worthy people in...
  24. How about this for marketing purposes? I do know that tables at Twinsfest go at crazy rates, but how about joining with an established someone who will be there and willing to be there and sign copies (and give that established someone a commission) You will be there anyways, might as well make something out of it...
  25. Still don't get the affinity of Twins' fans with Morris. The Twins made him the highest paid pitcher in the AL in 1991. He decided to go to Toronto next season for the same money the Twins offered him. And yes, there was that 1991 game seven. And yes, Morris lost to the Twins in '87 while wearing a Tigers' uniform. And including his postseason record, he won 22 and lost 12 games pitching for the Twins, but won 23 and lost 12 games pitching against the Twins. Yeah he hails from the Cities. So what?
