  1. Yesterday was the time to do that... A total no-brainer. Major improvement over Florimon and I am not even going to talk about Bartlett here.
  2. Not the only ones. Matter of fact, lots of out of towners are watching the local broadcasts (via MLB.tv,) buy merchandise (at full price nevertheless at the Twins' store online, because don't have access to discounts in MN-based Targets & Marshalls etc.) and attend games as well both during ST and during the season. And I bet to venture based on my experience and talking to people that most ST attendees in Twins games are not from MN. As far as TF attendance goes, yes indeed most of the people attending are from the Cities. But by keeping a closed mind and targeting things locally, the Twins brass really loses out opportunities... (like most of us would care less about the Minneapolis Millers - a New York Giants minor league team)
  3. I see what you meant Miss-understanding & I should double check what I write to clear it up from idioms from the other side of the pond (where I hail from.) By "speaks down" I did not mean "talk down" (as in the American English = condescending) but, as in "shows" or "reveals". And am I sure that everyone is loyal fan in here The point I want to make is that some of us are loyal Twins' fans whether others are loyal Minnesota MLB team fans (which happens to be the Twins.) Slight difference maybe but noticeable nevertheless and it becomes larger in hard times...
  4. I suspect that they count Canadians as foreign as well and the Twins are minus 2 this season. As far as African Americans in baseball go and the decline in their numbers, is more complicated than race: there is a huge decline in baseball participation in urban areas in general. Baseball has become a suburban and small town sport. Imagine kids try to play ball after school on an urban street or a parking lot or where? Not a race or even socioeconomic thing; more of a space and exposure thing. Academies? On this hemisphere always surprised that Mexico, with its large population is somewhat ignored as a baseball source here. I think that this is a huge market to tap. Europe as well (and making it an Olympic sport for a tad really helped, but now...)
  5. Escobar got to root for the little guys
  6. This is kind of an interesting statement and I think that really speaks down to a large division in the Twins (and any other team's pretty much) fan base. There are some of us (and lot of us do not live in MN any more) who would follow the Twins and root for them because we are Twins' fans no matter what. This includes if they moved elsewhere. Minnesota Twins, Charlotte Twins, Honolulu Twins, they are my team. No matter what. There are others, and almost 100% locally based, who follow the Twins because they are the hometown team and if they moved, they would follow the team that replaced them and "hate" the Twins because they moved and even root against them. Think NorthStars/Stars vs. Wild for example. And the Twins are betting mostly on the second group (which is the less loyal fan group) for some weird reason... And it seems to me that the second group is the one that cares less about the Twins winning, as long as they stay put... Just some food for thought...
  7. Unless you think outside the box and trade some good pieces and blocked prospects like Kepler or Walker to get better pieces like the Tgers seem to do season after season. And there is always the DH position occupied now by the ghost of Kubel's past. Sure there are better options there.
  8. I think that 96 on top of 99+96 breads negativity (as it should, unless one is apathetic). Ryan with open pockets, helped alleviate that partially, but the closest it was coming to the Spring Training and the realization that as far as bats go, the Twins are (practically) replacing Morneau with Suzuki and Doumit with the ghost of Kubel's past settled, that open pocket hope faded. And for a good reason. Still, as every spring I was optimistic and thought that they will be a .500 team. Until I went there. And, frankly, this 2014 team has worse attitude and energy compared to the last 3 seasons' teams. And this reality really hit me hard. Call it "negativity" as much as you want. I call it reality. And if there is anything "negative" about this team, is the ones who are dragging it down. And this is not the fans who are unhappy about their team being horrible (again.) It is the people in the team who are paid to win and who do not care about winning and the ones in the team who are apathetic about it and feel that it is ok, as long as the receipts are ok and the team is back in black. That is "negativity"; I cannot call negativity wanting to see a World Series parade again down University Avenue and vocally disliking the fact that it might not be in the cards again for a while...
  9. Penilla has a few GCL innings and most in relief under his belt. He has to be E-town bound...
  10. yes there are indeed. http://cache1.asset-cache.net/gc/81338656-baseball-minnesota-twins-manager-billy-martin-gettyimages.jpg?v=1&c=IWSAsset&k=2&d=GkZZ8bf5zL1ZiijUmxa7QStpwr2fIHnefm0vEX1vus9a4hJIYAZTVxi52eenKjzI3AO5UBfLKQ0pu%2Be9IepbflfVgUfuq16zDI3lrHQm1PI%3D
  11. Sulbaran played a grand total of four (4) games with the Kernels last year. Hard to make conclusions based on that. His career line (in 118.7 IP) in the Midwest League in a tad more than a season, is: 3.56 ERA (FIP around 3.3ish), 1.340 WHIP, 7.9 K/9, 2.89 K/BB. Hardly top of the line level... I first saw him pitch this spring, and I liked what I saw, but for some weird reason in the back of my mind, I have 2 words: Jose Mijares...
  12. I saw Vielma play a couple of weeks ago and was really surprised (whole ST post here) by his play, and had this to write about him: This is the single one most unknown superstar in the making in the Twins' organization. He turned two unassisted double plays (one a line out/throw out the other a step on second throw at first) today and he made them seem so easy. Like it is an everyday kind of thing. Looks like his contact tool is getting better. He has crazy nutty speed and as a cutoff guy, he almost threw a guy out at third on a easy triple. Very strong arm. And he has room to grow. I think that he will move into second in my SS rankings after 6th overall ranked Jorge Polanco. That "superstar" categorization was not written lightly. The kid has Ozzie Smith ceiling with the glove. Very good catch by Keith Law, but the rest of us had not seen him play before this Spring. Which makes me think that a July-August Fort Myers trip might be in order to catch GCL Cedar Rapids' folks are in for a treat with this kid... On JC's roster I am certain that there are at least half a dozen or so total position players and (mainly) pitchers, including Josh Burris who are on the CR roster but in the DL. Bet we will find out early next week.
  13. Depends how you count If you count WAR, here is the top 10 (11 actually because the last 2 are so close) hitters in the franchise (and this is not career WAR is franchise-only WAR) : 1 Harmon Killebrew 66.3 2 Rod Carew 56.9 3 Sam Rice 50.3 4 Joe Judge 45.6 5 Kirby Puckett 44.9 6 Joe Mauer 44.0 7 Goose Goslin 42.2 8 Tony Oliva 40.7 9 Buddy Myer 38.9 10 Kent Hrbek 37.6 11 Clyde Milan 37.5 and here are the top 10 pitchers. 1. Walter Johnson 123.9 2 Bert Blyleven 57.9 3 Jim Kaat 50.2 4 Camilo Pascual 47.8 5 Brad Radke 44.5 6 Dutch Leonard 37.5 7 Johan Santana 34.8 8 Frank Viola 30.0 9 Dave Goltz 28.3 10 Kevin Tapani 24.7 So, undeniably, the best franchise player is the one who (for some weird, unfortunate and disturbing reason) does not have a statue outside Target Field... And Killebrew is miles behind him Mauer does have a HOFer behind him in the list, but Goslin's career WAR (add Browns and Tigers) is 64.
  14. Good stuff JC. And I really wish that the biggest of the Twins' problems were who was going to be the last man on their bench... A little nit picking: Quick: Identify the one who does not belong with the others in that list. Hint: He will be 31 this July.
  15. 4 times officially (without the boss changing his mind later in the season or off-season.) Many more unofficially...
  16. Rangers too and he was the 3rd base coach and a big reason for the '65 Twins team
  17. This is good stuff and definitely these guys were (Puckett) and are (Mauer) the faces of the franchise in up (mostly) times. Puckett is the guy who is mostly associated with 87 and 91 and Mauer the one who mostly is associated with the improved Twins in this millennium. Hard to compare them otherwise. A couple of interesting things that Souhan did not mention: Mauer has the highest BA of any active player right now, while Puckett has the 4th highest post WWII BA of any RHB, behind DiMaggio, Pujols and Cabrera. Given the contracts of the last 2, and the fact that DiMaggio's best seasons were before WWII, Kirby can easily to this list in 2-3 years..
  18. RIP http://i.ebayimg.com/00/$(KGrHqYOKo0E1z3+WM5vBNtZrJN-9g~~_3.JPG
  19. Howard Fox indeed, and the unknown ear belongs to The father of Drew. There is a video of that some place... I guess it is here now too [video=youtube;w2F3eTgZXGU]
  20. I hated that move when it happened. I remember that you also were a bit surprised when he left,: And after his last year (2011) with the Twins you had him as the 6th best hitter, in the system just behind Sano and well ahead of Parmelee and Arcia among others. Forget about his teen seasons in Foreign Rookie leagues and in the GCL, but a career .315/.349/.452 line over 152 games in AA is pretty darn good for a middle infielder. Heck, it is better than most of the Twins' MiLB OFs have had. Hard move to justify, especially in a team that the last 3 seasons had the likes of Clete Thomas, Doug Bernier, Matt Carson, Erik Komatsu, Sean Burroughs, Matt Tolbert, Jason Repko, Brian Dinkelman & Co on the 40- and 25-man rosters some time. And I am not even going to touch their pitchers. Glad to see that he made the Yankees (Neshek made the Cardinals and Manship made the Phillies rotation btw; the latter saying more about the sorry state of the Phillies and not about Manship) And in 2014, he might look better in a Twins' uniform as a super utility guy instead on the ghost of Bartlett's past...
  21. I don't know about MS, exploder etc, but about half of the issues this site has with loading is due to the Flash ads. And I am on the latest version of FF (which is a memory pig, btw) and works really well when I go to the task manager and nuke flash. Willing to bet that the site will load 1000% faster if not for the flash ads, but I bet, you don't want to find out I suspect that the Chrome problems people are having are due to the known issues that the latest version of chrome browsers have with certain software firewalls like Norton or MS. Rebooting solves that.
  22. This is old and incomplete. Hold onto your horses Pat Dean, for example, is in the New Britain rotation...
  23. I assume that you mean free of cost, as well - Wikimedia - flickr or photobucket when the owner says so - getty images (some of them are pay only, some of them are free) - library of Congress and the like government sources
  24. +1 He was with the Phillies for a while and I have seen him play both at Reading (AA) and Lehigh Valley (AAA) and despite being one of the center pieces in the Roy Halladay trade, he is an stick only corner OF with Delmonian instincts on the field. Would he be an upgrade over someone like Wilkin Ramirez and the like at the AAAA level? Maybe. But at this point, even Colabello's stick is better than his, and Taylor is out of options.
