  1. Maybe. Lower fielding percentage than Sano at RF this season and fewer stolen bases as well. Kirillof's fielding tool is not that great either....
  2. This sucks. Wishing him a quick and speedy recovery.
  3. Of course that is the low hanging fruit. Manipulating ratings for players who are playing in an owned team to increase attendance etc compared to the rest of the league It is more than that. Think the possibilities of artificially depressing the rankings of amateurs so they can drop to your team and/or sign with less $. And BA is not exclusively a "prospects" publication. Part of it is about the business of minor league baseball, team purchases, moves etc. Direct conflict of interest there.
  4. It is complicated and it is turned into a saga of sorts. This is the latest. The park is owned by the City. Even the GM of the team is a city employee. The Twins threatened of leaving and the city finally approved $3.2M for the renovations necessary (read: Pretty much a whole rebuild) but there is still back an forth and whining from the locals. Interesting story to follow. The Twins will play there in 2017, but nothing is set in stone for 2018. Part of the problem is that Elizabethton is a small town of 15,000 people or so.
  5. That's a euphemism for "has not been good enough to stick at third so they wanted to see whether they can find a position for him". Kind of hard to peg him with the bat as well. Look at Cedar Rapids: he managed a .286 BA only out of a .403 BABIP, which is really horrible. For comparison, Cedar Rapids' other second baseman, Louis Arraez, (same age btw) managed a .347 BA from a .382 BABIP. So something is due for a correction there. There is still hope, but as long as he is in the same team as Arraez, he will not play second base consistently (because Arraez is by far the better player), something that he needs to do, otherwise there will be problems because his bat will not play at a corner position. Maybe they need to hold him back a bit to get those reps...
  6. Here is the problem with Romero: The most innings he pitched in a season was last season and it was 90-1/3. The second most was in 2013 and it was 45. To consider him close to big leagues he needs to get close to 150 innings. And he will not get there in 2017. Too big of a jump. Maybe he will get to 120 innings or so, depending on health, but they will keep a watch on his arm. Very similar situation with Jay who he only pitched 83-2/3 innings last season. Do not expect these guys in the majors, as starters, any time soon.
  7. I think that a lot of it depends on how Hughes is and whether or not he can pitch competitive by the end of Spring Training. There is no way I see Berrios starting the season in the majors. He is behind May, Vogelsong, Haley, Santiago, Mejia (and maybe even Duffey whom the FO might give another chance as a starter, since they have adopted a wait and see approach) in the depth chart, plus he chose to miss at least a month of Spring Training (along with Santiago, which puts both behind the 8 ball a bit.) If Hughes is healthy, I see the Twins rotation as Santana, Hughes, Gibson, May, Vogelson/Haley with the one who does not make it follow Santiago in the pen as long/swing men. Mejia, Berrios in AAA with the one who is pitching better getting the call up if necessary. Too much congestion in AAA again. I suspect that about half of those guys listed, if still with the team after ST, will pitch in the Rochester pen... Starting pitching is an organizational glaring weakness. Only 3 players with top of the rotation stuff, two of whom might end in the pen (Jay and Romero) and the third is so far away and raw that nobody knows how he will end up (Graterol). Everyone else, including Berrios after last season, mid to rear of the rotation in a competitive team ceiling. The Twins really have to address this..
  8. Santiago was mostly a reliever in 2012 with the WSux (42 G, 4 GS), then mostly a starter in 2013 (34 G, 23 GS) and 2014 (30 G, 24 GS). He is a swingman. Swarzak material. As a matter of fact, if you ignore his ERA and look at his FIP, He has been pretty consistent. His career FIP is 4.73 and has been +/- .60 all his career. FWIW, Swarzak's career FIP is 4.30, as a comparison point. Gibson was off (and hurt) last season, but pretty consistent the previous 2 seasons (3.80 & 3.96 FIP). I'd take that and 180+ IP from him. Solid number 4 type.
  9. Thanks. Labor of love. Some researching, mostly watching and taking notes. And writing. I figured that it took me about 30 hrs to write it all. Oh. Thrylos. As far as pen name goes: Source of it is Greek. 99% of the people who pronounce it get it wrong. Thry does not rhyme with fry . The original pronunciation is something like "THREE-loss" and it means "rumor" (or "legend" as in urban) So that's that
  10. Seth, look at the video of last September up there. He is not close to that. He's got a base I give you that. But 225 max at that height...
  11. Here. Probably as good as you can find in the internets these days. International free agent signings has been pretty much a game with a lot of players who were there to make a profit, including "scouts", "handlers", "the authorities", etc. So take everything you read about who "the best prospects might be" with a huge grain of salt.
  12. Here is the thing: When I said that he is "listed very generously" I mean it. I have seen some places listing his weight close to 250, which is wrong. This video was taken last September. He is about 225 or so. Your call:
  13. From the BA top 100 chat: Tiny Lister (Compton, CA): Who was the guy that didn't make the top 100 consensus, but that you fought the hardest for inclusion? Matt Eddy: Some of my picks to click who didn’t make the Top 100 were Brock Stewart (Dodgers) and Scott Kingery and Roman Quinn (Phillies). Some others with carrying tools who deserve mention: Padres 2B Luis Urias (hit), Reds OF Aristides Aquino (power), Cardinals OF Magneuris Sierra (speed, defense), Twins RHP Fernando Rodney (power stuff, plus control) and potential power-speed outfielders Desmond Lindsay (Mets) and Jesus Sanchez (Rays). That "Fernando Rodney" has to be a Freudian slip describing Fernando Romero.
  14. I used lower innings because of injuries etc. Also in AAA, if a pitcher is pitching 70 innings (my cutoff) well, chances are that he will get promoted, so you don't want to penalize the good ones...
  15. As far as prospect ranks go, the players have to prove nothing. The ones who do the rankings have to prove that they did a decent job. Buxton did not rank himself number 1. Others did, and they are the ones who need to prove themselves "correct".
  16. in AAA? Um No. The International League had 14 SP with 70+ IP with <5% BB% and 27 with <6% and the Pacific Coast League had 10 with < 5% and 21 with 6% and under. Hopefully that 5% in AAA would translate to an 8% in the majors BTW 13 starters with 100+ IP had <5 BB% in the majors, 39 had 6% or less and 85 8% or less. Data here. Not sure where you got your numbers....
  17. - Pitching great for Puerto Rico against AA/AAA opposition will mean nothing - Unfortunately, the Twins' hands are tied behind their back as far as allowing their players to play in the WBC. It is political. MLB needs some serious rules about not allowing anyone who is on a 40-man roster to participate in the WBC. - ST is for getting stretched and win a spot when there are several others who also have interest in that spot. May and Vogelsong as a matter of fact have more reasons to be handed a spot than Berrios...
  18. The problem I have is that he was on his age 22 season last season and this season only in his age 23 season. Good 7-8 years from his prime. Too young to have to prove anything. Just lazy work IMHO. They are players in the Twins who have to prove more (Gibson, Hughes, Vargas, even Dozier proving that 2016 was not a fluke.) Pure lazy.
  19. I love the use of the world "consensus" to describe 5 people's opinions... And in 2015 half of them had them behind Bryant
  20. Totally understand it. Re: Diaz: I have been higher on Vargas than most (he ended being number 7 in my list last time he was qualified) and Diaz has better power, hit tool, and speed. FWIW, he has 2 triples last season as well. Re: Javier: The comparable here is Buxton who was pretty much number 1 since he was drafted, but Javier does have better power than Buxton, less speed, and better pitch recognition. Very similar players, but Javier is a bit better at that age, plus he is playing a more premium position (SS vs. CF). I know that I am higher than most in these 2, but I believe that they are the real things.
  21. 2014. Moved about 10 feet back. Here is a great writeup of the park before they moved the fences. The Twins (that actually own that club) got the City to approve a budget to further renovate. As you can tell that ballpark is a mess...
  22. He.Made.His.Own.Bed. What Berrios needs is to improve the command of his fastball and to throw strikes. He had 8.3 BB% in AAA, and 12.5 in the majors. He needs to drop that down to 5% before he comes up
  23. 1. The previous owners of BA were almost 100% into automotive industry holdings, including Motor Trend 2. The current owners need to do something to minimize conflict of interest, since they also own Minor League teams, which are covered by BA. If they do not, there might be some issues here...
  24. Here is the problem I have with Berrios (and with Santiago to a lesser extend) : He knew that he was in the bubble as far as a rotation spot went and he decided to forego a month of Spring Training to pitch for Puerto Rico, instead of fighting for that spot. This says a lot about priorities and I would hate to see the Twins rewarding player(s) who made Puerto Rico a higher priority than the Twins after an 103 L season. At this point I think that he got himself behind May, Vogelsong and even Mejia in the depth chart, and it is all his doing...
  25. I have him as 3rd overall. I hear that "lack of game-power" and I see a .264 isoP from Diaz, same league same team same year where everyone's latest greatest, Kirilloff, has .146 isoP, and wonder how people would feel about Kirilloff's dismal game-power, as a comparison. /sarcasm. Plenty of game power
