  1. Dodger fans are mixed on Puig. You get the old curmudgeons just like you do anywhere else. FWIW, Scully loves him and his enthusiasm for the game. He commented once that Puig reminds him of how Negro League baseball was played - before those same players were forced to conform to "white baseball" code of conduct BS.
  2. That's a ridiculous comparison. Comparing apples and pine cones (well, they both come off of trees, so must be comparable! level of equation).
  3. I don't get this at all. I've also seen plenty of the "stare down the pitcher" commentary on what Puig did. He did not stare at the pitcher at all - he watched the home run leave, then looked out to see that the pitcher was looking, and then he placed his bat down. As a pitcher, I was always zeroed in on every hitter individually as an overarching goal of completing the inning, and, further, the game. After that fight with the individual was won or lost, there was a level of exuberance or disappointment. Being able to generate that exuberance into a display at the end of the individual is not "showing up" as much as it could very well be a "tip of the cap" to someone just as well. Puig's background has plenty of people after him, but he's also the guy who was joking with and hugging Javy Baez after the finger wag at second base as well. He's a guy who plays with emotion, but he's learned how to direct that emotion. If a pitcher has previously called out bat flips, he very well may lay down the bat as a point of statement. I have no issue with that whatsoever as he's not starting the fight, he's responding to previous statements.
  4. I'd not add him. He's not played above A-ball. You do put him on the AAA protected list, though because he'd absolutely go in the AAA portion.
  5. No, it couldn't be. Plus, the Braves don't have a GM right now nor multiple other pieces they'll need to be ready for the 2018 season. They'll be a step behind other orgs this offseason, waiting for an announcement once the WS is over.
  6. I saw this thread and serious have spent ever since when I have a moment searching for the article or program where I saw this interview, but one of the people present among the press when LHO was being transferred was interviewed and talked about Ruby stepping on his toe, and that he was so vanilla to the crowd - blending in perfectly in size, build, even generally in racial background. Ruby was able to slip in among the reporters crowding in that area, giving him perfect cover, because he blended so well among them, so much so that this particular guy mentioned he didn't notice Ruby until he stepped on his toe as he stepped forward through the group and then out as LHO was brought toward where he was standing.
  7. Diaz has very good pitch recognition. He's just aggressive on the stuff he sees he can get after, and he's got the contact ability to make contact with most of it. He's kept his strikeout rate low due to a solid understanding of the zone and pitch recognition. He honestly reminds me a ton of a former Twins lefty swinger that racked up doubles and then had a swing adjustment in Boston that turned him into a Hall of Famer. Hopefully Rowson gets with him to continue the swing work he's done in the last year+ to improve his ability to impact the ball. Things sound different off his bat, even if they don't leave the yard. I don't have access to exit velo on him, but just in watching plenty of his games, I'm not sure anyone but Vlad Jr. had a ball leap off his bat the way Diaz did this year in the Midwest.
  8. I'm a huge Diaz fan. Absolutely love him.
  9. 3-6 top 100 guys this offseason, depending on who you talk with is fairly good top end. The depth, however, is very, very good. I've chatted with a few at places that will be putting out lists that have the Twins as a top 10 system. Don't sleep on Graterol. Might be surprised how many top 100s he creeps into this year with the talk about him with folks.
  10. Yep, and he's been pitching fairly major spots along the way. His broken arm was the most brutal part of it. He came back from TJS and in an early-season game had a Dave Dravecky moment that simply made your stomach turn over - that's why they were granted longer rehab time for him in the minor leagues as well. He'll be a back end guy for them in 2018. Point being that the Braves picked him knowing he was headed to TJS and have held on through all this other stuff. Burdi very well could go.
  11. Braves still have a Rule 5 guy who is arbitration eligible this year. He'll have to be on the team through May next year to finally fulfill his Rule 5 from 2014.
  12. Not making excuses of course, but still....today's weather was absolutely nuts.
  13. In all seriousness, the weather had a lot to do with that. The wind was ridiculous and unpredictable, which made throwing for both sides difficult. Rhoda had some nice throws also get dropped. I will say that I don't care if he's 6'10" or not, throw the damned flag for DPI on guys when they're draped on Wozniak. Both tight ends had multiple DPI calls blatantly missed today to the point where my wife and foster daughter hollered at the TV.
  14. A number of teams are sitting with $1-2M that they had left or have acquired since the news that Otani would come over as that will be against the signing cap, so collecting some room is important for these teams, even though they'll definitely go over with him. The intention is to avoid the massive financial penalty for going over by having available pool space.
  15. While details are not 100% certain, the Yankees are thought to have between $1.25-2M left of their budget. Signings of $10,000 or less don't count toward that cap, but everything else does. Oddly, the Braves likely had one of the highest amounts of money unspent, as they had acquired just under $2M on top of their initial $4.25M and they had a $300K signing limit this season.
  16. Yes, but they also spent pretty heavy so far. $500K wouldn't buy much in the market if guys were set free.
  17. Plus, Twins wouldn't be able to do much signing. Most of the guys would be required to go through either draft caps or IFA caps.
  18. A lot of people are hoping that, but the more things are brought out, it's less and less likely anything happens there. Turns out that the initial report that got MLB involved was not from another team, but from a report from an employee who resigned after a Coppy blow up in the draft room that completely isolated a number of employees. Said employee essentially pointed the directions to the 14 y/o they had a written deal with already. In fact, one of the beat writers is indicating that the Braves may have been instructed by MLB not to announce the resignation until Monday, but that it had been decided as much as weeks previously.
  19. Yeah, Coppy was dumb enough to put his name on paper. Usually everything is verbal and handshake. That put too strong a tie to him. However, plenty have lost jobs. Jim Bowden has been blacklisted in MLB because of how he ran international affairs (skimming off of international bonuses). Ben Cherington had already resigned when the Red Sox got punished, but they did have two international scouts lose their jobs. The White Sox had an employee fired a few years back after an investigation, but they had already moved on in GM, so that wasn't an issue. This offseason could bring more - heck, it might bring more with the Braves as Hart is not in the clear at all.
  20. This is covered quite a bit in the main MLB season thread in more depth.
  21. Stanton's contract is going to be prohibitive for most teams. He's barely opened the envelope on the first check of his $300M+ extension. I'd wager it's Yankees/Red Sox/Cubs/Dodgers, like most guys with contract issues...
  22. I'm having to deal with someone saying this is basically the prime reason for an international draft on another forum. That does nothing to help kids. The Braves are being investigated for domestic draft dealings, and there are plenty of financial shenanigans in the international draft as well.
  23. Sounds like the league didn't investigate based on fellow Braves employees, but on other FOs reporting Coppy.
  24. One of the throw away lines in Passan's article and mentioned in Rosenthal's article as well was that the league is in the midst of investigating as many as 15 teams for international violations. The most recent CBA did give the commish's office a lot more teeth in the international market to discipline, so this could be an interesting offseason.
  25. The "big" name that the Braves could lose is Derian Cruz. They signed Dian Toscano and Carlos Portuondo from Cuba for more than most thought they would get, and Cruz was a highly-regarded prospect in the class the season before the big 2016 class the Braves signed. All three were represented by the same trainer. There's some discussion about some low-money guys in that class being "hidden" from other teams by the Braves to keep their prices down, like Juan Carlos Encarnacion and Yoeli Lopez.
