  1. I dropped a note to a Braves player, and he told me that Riley was crushed. Sounds like he and Wade chatted before Wade left Arizona, though, which is probably good for Riley's psyche heading into an offseason.
  2. As a Braves fan, cannot be more pleased than I am with Alex Anthopoulos.
  3. Except that you had the rookie of the year, Chuck Knoblauch, Mike Pagliarulo, Scott Leius, a guy who finished with votes for MVP, Chili Davis, and basically an entire new setup crew - Mark Guthrie, Carl Willis, and Steve Bedrosian. The 1991 team was a big makeover from that 1990 team. Don't kid yourself.
  4. Part of what can happen when you release the list this early, sadly, and especially when you go this deep.
  5. Watching this live in my kitchen, I went to a knee with an audible gasp that got every child in the house looking at the TV in the living room when they were previously half paying attention as they played with Legos. It was horrific live to see the play.
  6. Thing is that he asked not to be inducted if he wasn't by the time he passed. Many feel his nomination now is disrespectful to his wishes.
  7. I had just spent an hour Tuesday talking with a scout about Flores in doing research for my upcoming Red Sox list. His text Wednesday night was two words: "F*** cancer"
  8. This is tremendously well-done, and also a concern to anyone hoping for sweeping changes in 2018: https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2017/11/08/donald-trump-johnstown-pennsylvania-supporters-215800
  9. That could make a good theme for a Twitter handle or even, if I may say so, a Tigers forum!
  10. I've shared this a few places this afternoon... I've had the chance to see Maddux, Smoltz, Pedro, Clemens, and Big Unit all in the prime and at their best from a stadium seat. I've had a chance to see Max Scherzer have a perfect game taken away from him by Jose Tabata's elbow (on my honeymoon, no less). However, I've never seen more exciting pitching than watching Halladay start and Johan come in to relieve Kenny Rogers, I believe, in early 2003 before either had really established himself and were both looking to make their way in the game. He had a special way of approaching his work on the mound that made you want to watch every single pitch, and when I do scouting reports, many guys are in a class of "incomparable" - there's really not another Maddux/Altuve/Pedro, just guys with their physical attributes that will have to hit the 0.00001% that those guys did with those physical attributes to make it - but my incomparable on the mound has always been Halladay. He was unique, and so good at it. The "positive" on this is that I'm pretty sure it'll end up giving him a bump come HOF voting and we won't have to listen to a debate on that, thankfully.
  11. ...and he didn't look out of place, either. That part impressed me quite a bit.
  12. Long-time Twins AAA affiliate...
  13. I'll get away from the Morris talk and say that the best Modern Era candidate isn't on the ballot - Lou Whitaker. Incredible that he's not in the Hall already. Actually, a better word would be pathetic. The former Twins arm to argue about isn't Morris...it's Kaat.
  14. I know that you're thoughtful on this issue and not making this statement, glunn, but my biggest issue is that the ONLY conversation, seemingly, about mental health circles around acts just like this, regardless of what is used to commit the act. Mental illness leading to someone committing an act like this is about akin to the 400-pound man who runs a sub-4 hour marathon. It can happen, and it does, but it's not the usual or expected outcome. Mental illness is an area where this country in general is so incredibly mal-informed that it makes the knowledge in areas like nutrition in the country look incredibly informed (and it's not...at all). The overwhelming vast majority of mentally ill will never act out against another human being, and most definitely not against a stranger to them. When they are a threat to themselves or others, it is typically more of an issue of lashing out against loved ones, not against strangers. Acts of aggression against a stranger are incredibly rare within true mental illness. If we want to have a REAL discussion on mental illness and mental health, great, let's do that! I can think of little that is more needed within the American society currently. However, if we are going to continue to placate ideas of mental health funding and/or reform and see any changes simply be a matter of a way to funnel federal money to a prominent donor, then count me out. It's better to have the country stay in the dark than to push that mantra and create an even more damaging social stigma.
  15. That guy is Graterol. Well, and Lewis. Lewis is considered by many a guy who could play in the majors in 2019, which is remarkable for a high school talent. The biggest questions I got from other teams' guys who saw him in GCL or Cedar Rapids was whether he stuck at short simply because the nuance of the pro game at the position may not have time to develop before his bat is ready for the majors.
  16. Now that the series is over, we can hear the conclusion to this... Of course, with the news out now that this may be involving Coppy and Blakely doing some illegal skimming in their money paid out in Latin America, the stuff that MLB punishes may not really hurt the Braves much at all. More of a "lack of institutional control" thing. FWIW, the Braves are not searching for a GM, they're looking for a President of Baseball Ops, and as of the last out of the World Series, Hart doesn't have an active contract with the team in that role, so it's entirely feasible that he either returns to MLB Network or is bumped into a more reserved role.
  17. Davis is fun to watch play the game. He's a guy who you can tell understands how lucky he is to be playing the game now after losing a season and having that chance possibly taken away from him (his injury to his shoulder was pretty gruesome). Hard not to cheer for a guy like that.
  18. That once was true. That has significantly changed in the last decade or so, to the point where teams are intentionally developing guys in the bullpen and choosing not to develop them as starters. Certainly, the decision to move them to the bullpen is happening sooner now than it ever was before with guys who have the chance to be legit elite relievers. There's good reason to get behind certain guys, but there's also a lot of "feel" on relievers. A guy that Seth watches throw 3 pitches in the bullpen and top out at 92 from the left side could look like a LOOGY at best sort of guy, but I watch him and see something in his slider that makes me think he could have a shot at working against both sides - and either one of us could be right. Like Seth, I often discount guys in the bullpen a tick or two because they're in the bullpen, but you cannot deny a guy who has shown elite stuff and health up to the upper minors. That's when those guys start ranking in top 15-20 range, even as a reliever.
  19. I was able to go out to 100 a few weeks ago without a lot of trouble. The biggest issue was who to leave off, especially among relievers, as the Twins do have a significant amount of guys who have a legit chance of a major league career of some variety in the bullpen, and that's of value for sure. Already hearing buzz from guys of the Twins having a top 10 system, and the more talk that there is about the system, the more people seem to really like the depth.
  20. The whole point is that we are watching this game from our couch. I don't know the relationship between the players in question. We don't know if it's something where he and the pitcher are going to laugh and hug about it after the game. All we see is what the clip catches or the game video catches. I've noted Puig tip his cap, pat a pitcher on the back their next encounter, and point his bat (or finger) at him with a smile to acknowledge the pitcher getting the best of him. We just don't know what the pitchers and hitters are thinking and doing on the field from play to play. They are competitors, but they're also friends. I played against good friends on the football field and how we responded after a play would have looked bad to people for sportsmanship if you didn't know that we were friends and having fun with one another.
  21. From what I've seen of him, the shape of his body has changed drastically in the last two years. He does have some very good instincts at first, though. Much like a guy like Bellinger, you could have a guy playing average or even above average outfield or playing high-end defense at first. At what point is the trade off not worth it, especially as there's obvious work on his offensive approach happening that I'm sure the team wants him focusing on.
  22. You're entitled to your opinion. I happen to think you're completely reading the situation wrong.
  23. Not advocating for him to be protected, but he isn't limited to 1B defensively as he has a good arm and is reasonably athletic - moreso than Rooker for sure.
  24. When I'm powerlifting, I get on par psyched when I finish my last rep of my last set of squats during a week of rep work as I do when I do a single-rep max weight lift. That level of exhilaration is not uncommon for many in athletics.
