Ranking the Twins' Biggest Disappointments in 2023
Schmoeman5 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
You're right. I didn't make a list. I didn't make a list because I didn't have high expectations for a lot of the guys being listed as disappointing. Buxton. Is doing what he'd done his whole career. Kepler has been on a back slide hitting wise since 2019. Gallo about what I expected. Miranda 2nd year jinx and being under Correa umbrella might have let it go to his head. So with that here goes. #1 Correa. Signed for big money. I didn't expect .200 in June. #2 Gordon. I did expect him to come out hot. Especially with injuries he was going to get chance to prove last year was no fluke. And he was described by some as one of the best utility players out there. #3 Falvey. In an interview in January or February, he insisted the bullpen would be just fine and didn't require any kind of help to upgrade it. #4. The bullpen except for Duran. I did not expect multiple blown Holds and saves. Although I didn't have high expectations for Pagan. I did think Lopez Jax Moran etc would do much better. #5. Lopez the starter. I saw him this spring and his first 2 starts. I think he threw 31 pitches 1st inning vs KC. But settled in. I was wowed. But since he signed the contract it's be so-so at best. He seems to have that 1 bad inning per start. Disappointed in him since then. But there's hope that they can turn it around.- 43 replies

Carlos Correa is Coming On for Minnesota
Schmoeman5 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I still disagree 2016 27 did it 2017 29 hit over .300. With the emphasis going away from the homerun on some clubs and going to OBP. You can expect more athletic hitters. That's the kind of increase I expect. And not overnight. But prospects we'll see in the next few years. An I'm not demanding that. I just see baseball moving away from the 3 outcome hitters.- 49 replies

Can the Twins Predict Injury With Byron Buxton?
Schmoeman5 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
When the Twins signed Buxton to his 100 million dollar extention, how was it a steal? A career .230 hitter with some pop. Great speed. Best defensive CF in baseball. But! And that's the biggest part of it is that he's available a little more than 50% of the time. That's not a steal. That's market value. And now that he can only DH and it looks like his availability remains the same with highly diminished returns. It looks like Buxton got the steal. Not the Twins.- 15 replies

No and No. When he signed his contract last year there was no thought of him just being an every day DH. Or if there was, no one mentioned it. More along the line that he got half his value because he only played in half the games. And what is his trade value? I don't think there's any team that would give a top prospect for a guy who is game but more fragile than Humpty Dumpty. Let's look at it another way. You're a team that has a Royce Lewis type player. Tremendous upside but out for the last 2 years. Would you trade him straight up for BB? I wouldn't.

Carlos Correa is Coming On for Minnesota
Schmoeman5 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Why? With strikeouts down. More emphasis on speed and getting on base. I expect to see More .300 hitters. Team BA already higher than last year except for the Twins and a few other clubs- 49 replies

Carlos Correa is Coming On for Minnesota
Schmoeman5 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Better than Ozzie? His range is nowhere near his. Correa has a big arm supposedly. I see a lot of his long throws skipped over to 1st. Not saying he isn't a good shortstop. But I don't think he's any better than Ripken another tall SS. I'm not buying what him and Boras sold the Twins. If Turner Seager Simien that 2022 group of FA coerced big money longer deals from their clubs why wasn't Correa able to? Something is not adding up. We'll have 6 years to find out and assess who zoomed who. And now he has Planters Fasciitis That's not going away by tomorrow. We'll see.- 49 replies

Ranking the Twins' Biggest Disappointments in 2023
Schmoeman5 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
4 and 4A. Larnach and Miranda. Hmm. Larnach wasn't even supposed to be with the big club coming out of Spring training, but due to injuries. Polanco and Kirilloff came north. Had a real good 1st 10 days. Struggled and got sent down. Came back and hit 2 3R homers when he got back. As well as increasing his RBI total. Got sick with pneumonia and continued playing. Has missed 3 weeks and still leads team in RBI's. Miranda? Soph jinx maybe. But not top 5 disappointing.- 43 replies

In the original post that I responded to. It was implied that umpires were costing the Twins to lose games. When the thread specifically says " fortunately it didn't cost us this time" it's pretty clear that it's saying that umpires calls on balls and strikes have cost them games before. This is not true. Their bad calls aren't 100% against the Twins. Even though sometimes it may seem that way.

The only questionable strike last night was the called 3rd strike to Lewis. The rest were money. And the umpires aren't costing the Twins hitters. The Twins hitters are doing that on their own. There are missed calls all the time. Houston had a coach ejected over balls and strikes. So it goes both ways.

I wouldn't call it a fascination to extend starters to their limits. What is Varlands limit? 100 pitches? He wasn't there yet. So why not let him start the 8th? The bullpen used 3 guys for the final 2 innings. The bullpen btw is the reason the Twins aren't 10 or more games over .500. Not the lineup. I have more confidence in the lineup and hitting than I do in the bullpen

You mention Steer and CES defensive limitations and yet you want to see what Miranda and Julien do over the course of the next 6 years. Both of them are limited defensively as well. In fact with Buxton as DH where do you see Miranda playing with Lewis manning 3rd and Kiriloff at 1st.

I think we had this discussion a few months ago. I said then that the Twins would have a hard time cutting anyone that money was owed. Unlike the Yankees who cut loose a guy who they owe way more than the Twins owe Pagan. I'm not sure if it's a monetary thing either. More of an embarrassing thing because nobody likes to hear the phase "I told you so" I'm sure that behind the scenes the Twins are working with Pagan. His stuff isn't terrible. You've seen it, as have I. I think it's a mental thing more than a physical thing. Low leverage, high leverage. Makes no difference. Cut him and wish him well.

I've said since March that Buxton will not play CF this year. And it's not about the possibility of him being injured while playing CF. It's the additional wear and tear on his body. Every time he's on the bases it's 100% effort when running. And his slides are brutal. It's the same reason they haven't had him attempting to steal bases. How many has he attempted? He is fragile and everyone knows it. You and I may not agree with the the way the Twins play him as solely DH, but they're trying to maximize his AB's and that will limit him solely to hitting.
