  1. It was tough to watch the concussions derail Morneau's career and his swing/plate approach devolve afterwards. He did have a 4 or 5 season stretch that would rival almost any player to ever wear a Twins uniform, though. Morneau turns 33 next year, I would love to see him put in a few more career average years (something like .280/.350/.475 with 20-25 HR) and finish his career on a high note.
  2. I'm encouraged by the Twins being linked to the various catchers but excuse me if I'm underwhelmed by the pitchers. How about spending 15-17m/yr on a good pitcher instead of 15-20m/yr on two average/below average pitchers? I understand that they still might not land Garza or Jimenez but there's zero chance if they don't make an offer. The Twins are loaded with #5 starters and AAAA guys. They don't need two more #4s unless the goal is to win 73 games in 2014 and 2015.
  3. Mauer is the Twins' best player, I wouldn't call him their most valuable asset. Age, contract, and position all factor into the value of a player. It's a minor point but I've seen that phrase used a few times recently regarding Mauer. The most valuable assets the Twins have don't play for the Twins yet.
  4. Puig was part of the initial offer but his hot dog antics are anathema to the Twins Way.
  5. Good point about Pelfrey's representation. $13m would be overpaying but the offer would keep payroll/roster flexibility for the team. I don't love the idea but it makes a lot more sense than qualifying the husk of Justin Morneau.
  6. Trade Correia for anything (though I doubt anyone would want to pay his $5m salary next year) and extend Pelfrey with Correia's money plus a few million. Who am I kidding? Cut payroll another $30m and roll with Gibson and a herd of AAAA donkeys. I'm sure the savings will be reinvested when the Twins return to competitiveness, right? Right!?!??
  7. I had forgotten about Blackburn and actually got excited about him for a moment. I then realized how far my expectations have fallen in a few short years. Now I'm sad.
  8. Thanks. We also hope he's less of a d bag and is able to steer clear of mentally unstable strippers.
  9. Is this because I mentioned in passing that Gibby throws harder than Webb? Did you see the first part of the statement that was very complimentary of Webb's sinker? I don't remember writing "Gibson throws harder, therefore he'll be better than Webb." Apparently, you misinterpreted what I wrote or are aggravated by "everyone's" emphasis on power pitchers.
  10. Who is a good comp for Gibson? I always thought he had a Brandon Webb-type of ceiling. Webb's sinker was absolutely devastating but Gibson throws a little harder than he did. I don't expect Gibson to win a Cy Young but I think some were underselling him a bit.
  11. Get to know 'em (in the biblical sense!) - New TD campaign
  12. What reasoning could be given in this hypothetical conversation? 1. Gibby, you've been pitching really well the past six weeks but we need to see you do it at AAA a little longer. Keep it up and you might get to make a few starts with the big club. 2. Gibby, you've been pitching well lately but there just isn't a spot in the rotation right now. The guys up here are pitching too well to take out and are important members of the club's present and future. 3. You're doing great, kid, but we're a bunch of cheap d**ks and want to delay your service time as long as possible. TS, bro. 4. Derp derp "Gibson-ly" starts blah blah "Gibson-ish" attitude derp high levels of "Gibson-icity". Anyone have other possible explanations? #4 is the only one that holds any water IMO.
  13. I'm pretty sure Hendriks' MLB ERA is infinity.
  14. Don't hate the Yankees, just hate your d bag friend who is a Yankees, Patriots, Penguins, Heat and Manchester United "fan".
  15. Gibson's problem has been pitching too well at times. If his good starts weren't as good, he'd be more consistent and he'd already be with the big club. Also, the hotshot thinks it's ok to show up the other team by making batters swing and miss sometimes. We don't care for that type of attitude in Twins Territory.
  16. I agree it could be crowded in the OF in a few years. It could also be fairly barren since the prospects you mentioned are in fact, prospects. Hicks might never figure out how to hit as a lefty, Arcia's best position might be DH, Buxton is a monster but hasn't reached High-A yet and Kepler still plays in the Ramstein Air Base League, I believe. I think Arcia and Buxton are going to be phenomenal but I'm not sold on the other two. I'm not sold on Plouffe either but there will be room for him to find a spot for at least the next couple of years.
  17. Pelfrey is here to help this team reach its full 74 win potential. The Twins brass decided a full Houston-style rebuild (exceptions being Mauer and maybe Perkins) would be too big of a PR hit for a team that just got their shiny, new Section 8 housing a few short years ago.
  18. Plouffe is going to be a relatively cheap power hitter under team control for the next four years. Hammer, Morneau and Doumit are as good as gone. Parmelee and Hicks are far from given as future mainstays. The Pohlad's still throw nickels around like they're manhole covers. The Twins are going to give Plouffe the next two or three years to find a home (RF would be my guess).
  19. .202 in May and 7 hits in 25 June ABs? Eat your heart out, Drew Butera!!!
  20. Just put Hammer Time in CF for a few weeks. It might be hilarious enough to help us forget about Pelfrey, Walters & Co. for a while.
  21. I'm more of a Keith Atherton guy but to each his own. Great article, as always! Also, thanks for linking to your draft write ups, I didn't have the chance to read many of them right away.
  22. I will be extremely underwhelmed if the Twins go with McGuire. I do think that is the least likely scenario John laid out, though. Unless the Twins are completely in love with McGuire, they are not going to want to hear the Butera comps that will inevitably be thrown around (rightly or wrongly). "Good HS defensive C with unprojectable bat" seems like a bad combination of risk and low ceiling for the 4th overall pick, even in a weak class. Full disclosure: I know next-to-nothing about these prospects. I wasn't terribly thrilled with picking Buxton at the time. I probably shouldn't feel strongly either way about who they select.
  23. Gibson better start pitching more consistently, the Twins have a seemingly endless supply of turd sandwiches they can run out there.
  24. I think your points are valid that it has much more to do with the current rotation than Gibson knocking down the door. However, think those reasons are plenty good enough to call him up. If there are a number of guys who aren't producing, why not give a top prospect a shot? Did Hicks deserve to be given the CF job? Did Liam "Lost Boy" Hendriks give the team any reason to take him north (besides having an arm attached to his body)? Does Pelfrey's mediocre NL track record plus being one year removed from TJ inspire any confidence? Everyone else sucks huge donkey b...isnt very good. Gibson has pitched ok, is 25 years old and should be a fixture in the rotation for the rest of the decade. He may not have success right away but the reasons you pointed out are good enough for me.
