  1. The NFL and MLB drafts are so different, I don't think there are many lessons to be gleaned by comparing the two. An NFL team can draft a handful of players that make an immediate impact on the team, an MLB team doesn't reap any rewards from a given draft for 3-6 years. It's almost impossible to project what a major league team's roster will look like that far in the future. Also, no baseball player can have the same impact on a game as a QB unless he is some sort of Walter Johnson/Babe Ruth hybrid. It's apples and oranges again. It seems the positional value is already weighed into the current draft rankings. Pitchers are probably holding down 5 of the top 6 spots in consensus rankings right now. Turner and Gordon are flirting with the top 10 because they project to stick at SS, not for their bats. Circumstances could change but taking one of those two with the fifth pick would be a stretch right now. The Twins absolutely need to find a SS of the future and add more high-upside pitching talent. They can't force it, though. That's how you end up with Christian Ponder.
  2. One of my uncles did the proposal thing at a Badgers hockey game about 20 years ago and even the preteen chuchadoro was embarrassed for him. The important thing is they are still happily married but the act cannot be undone.
  3. Stuart Turner and Jesus sure do make great battery mates. http://www.bostondirtdogs.com/2004/JD_baseball.jpg
  4. You guys may be interested to know that I just bought John Voight's Chrysler LeBaron.
  5. I started this topic because Parmelee will be an oft-discussed player this spring and the misspelling of his name seemed to be spreading like a common cold. While I agree with JB that there are much more egregious mistakes (lose, loose), I also agree with others that the comments at TD are constructed better than just about any sports-related site. I wouldn't bother with the comment section if it had the same quality of ESPN or YouTube. I also don't automatically discount what others write just because of a few errors. There are members whose opinions I respect because they know more about the game than I ever will. I am willing to overlook some mistakes because I am familiar with their work and because my writing is far from perfect. That being said, I find the "my fingers move faster than my brain" justification tiresome. You just wrote 100 words, how long does it take to proofread? Don't make hundreds of others slog through your post just because you need your opinion known RIGHT NOW! We will still be here after you glance it over.
  6. Chris Parmelee was the Twins' 1st round pick in 2006. He has been in the organization nearly eight years, maybe we could give him the respect of spelling his name correctly. I would estimate I see "Parmalee" nearly half the time whenever there is mention of said player. C'mon guys, it's not like his surname is "Salt-a-la-ralph-macchio".
  7. The notion that Sano's injury is a blessing in disguise is laughable. Should we hope for all Twins prospects with 2014-15 ETAs to get injured in order to delay their service time? The Twins were not going to be a competitive team in 2014, with or without Sano. The only things I was looking forward to this year was the development of the top prospects and a starting rotation that is not as terrible as the previous couple of years. Hopefully we see Meyer, May, Hicks and others get their feet wet in the majors this year. I'm still excited about Arcia. But I can't help but feel that a lost season just got...more lost?
  8. Dr. Andrews happens to be one of those "few doctors". Perhaps he learned a lesson from the Washington Pro Football Team/RG3 Gong Show, though. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/09/26/dr-james-andrews-finally-clams-up-on-rgiii-sort-of/
  9. The Twins should've gotten a bucket of KFC for a sacrifice. %*€# you, Jobu.
  10. I have an Arby's coupon that is about to expire but I already went shopping and have plenty of decent food in my kitchen. Should I use the coupon while I still can, possibly at the expense of the food I already bought? Probably not since I got Arby's last year, ate half my sandwich, decided it was not fit for human consumption, and cooked a different meal.
  11. What do you mean by "you people"?
  12. I think you might be misconstruing the other side of the issue. It's not having too many options, it's having low-upside options possibly blocking Gibson/Meyer. Most fans won't automatically freak out just because Worley, Deduno or Diamond win the 5th spot. What some of us are worried about is the Twins not taking the best 12 pitchers north just because some guys are out of options. P.S. I might freak out if it's Diamond.
  13. I can't speak for everyone but would assume most understood what you meant in the article. I was just agreeing with you that the inevitable comparison of the two is unfair. I'm definitely not high on him right now, though.
  14. Good stuff regarding Swarzak, it could make Burton (more) expendable. I hope someone not named Scott Diamond wins that fifth spot, though.
  15. The Turner-Michael comp is unfair but I'm not terribly impressed with what I've read about Turner so far. "He's really fast and will likely stick at SS" is just about all I've heard on him. Having wheels is great but it's often the tool that first abandons a player. There is also a big difference between sticking at SS and being a plus defender at the position. I'm not saying Trea won't be good defensively. I would imagine he has good range and enough arm to get the "likely to stick at SS" label but I'd rather hear "projects as a plus defender". I also haven't heard much about his hit tool. If Turner projects as an above-average defender with a decent shot at .270/.350/.375, I'd gladly take it. My uninformed opinion has me in the Kolek camp right now, though.
  16. The only thing missing from the article is Nolasco's RBI total.
  17. But he made that heads up play that one time and dove into the stands to catch a foul ball on another occasion all while playing for the Yankees; ergo, he's a great defensive player. Grit, leadership, banana sandwich; Jeter is the full package.
  18. Of course we're all fans but some of us would be considered popular Twins bloggers first and foremost (hint: not me). Your response to the idea of Hicks abandoning switch hitting just seemed a little dismissive, as if it was a laughable suggestion made only by fans who don't know ISOp from Ice T. I apologize if I inferred too much from your statement, I just wanted to point out Nick's blog post from six months ago asking the same question. Hicks was bad as a lefty at A, A+ and last year. He was pretty good in New Britain in 2012. Maybe not a lost cause but not much to get my hopes up from the numbers I've looked at. How much can Hicks improve as a lefty? Is it too late in his career to abandon switch hitting? Could he actually be any worse taking his natural right handed cut vs RHP? I think these are worthy questions (plus FA is over and ST hasn't started yet. There are only so many prospect lists one can look at).
  19. Fans like this guy? http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=2&ved=0CCcQFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fm.startribune.com%2F%3Fid%3D221480121&ei=-ob6UuKMOdTQqwHdsIHgBA&usg=AFQjCNFk0QfwDmyPVteOPlImPZU_RQQjrA
  20. Eddie should know that weed has no place in baseball since the "Amphetamine Era" was courageously ended by MLB after a short 60 year reign as the player's drug of choice. Also, how did Eddie get busted? Did Selig pay off Eddie's dealer to acquire his records? On a more serious note, Eddie has made a few mistakes but isn't deserving of the sanctimonious tsk-tsking that sometimes follows these stories. I'm not too concerned he's going to become a Tampa Bay-era Josh Hamilton. Also, Rosario should stick at 2nd until if/when it's absolutely clear he can't play there. Rosario could adjust to a corner OF spot very quickly. He's not going to look like a meandering Parmelee just because he spent an extra year or two at 2nd.
  21. The person who executed the moderation action is still very much a part of the crew and I appreciate his hard work that goes into making this the best Twins site around. I didn't mention the editing issue to demand satisfaction but to discuss it and find out if it was an ongoing practice. I'm glad to hear about the consensus.
  22. I have a specific complaint regarding the editing of comments. I commented a few years ago that "at least Mauer would continue to lead the league in lady b*ners". Pretty questionable, I would have had no issue if it had been deleted. Instead, a mod changed the phrase to "swooning ladies". If I wanted to say "swooning ladies" I would have sent my closest chap a Western Union regarding his favorite baseballer, Cap Anson. Delete, warn, ban; do what you need. Don't put words in others' mouths.
  23. I think tobi is working from the premise that May will be a hard-throwing, cost-controlled bullpen option at worst and Revere needs to hit .325 to have a .350 OBP and could not throw a ball out of a wet paper bag. It might be a little early to call it a good return but you can see what he's getting at.
  24. I'm still optimistic on Kepler but the production needs to catch up to the tools in the next few years. Kepler not looking out of place in the AFL as a 20 year old is a good sign. He will be of average age for a low A player if he repeats at Cedar Rapids in 2014. I think Kepler takes a big step forward this year if he stays healthy.
  25. I'm also glad the Twins have gone out and spent some money in FA. On the other hand, what choice did they have? The Twins would have a payroll of $60-65m in 2014 if they had done their usual offseason dumpster diving. I'm guessing Dave St. Peter didn't want to run a "This is Houston Astros Territory" marketing campaign after three 90 loss seasons. After years of poor drafting, players aging, leaving and/or being sold at their lowest value, the Twins had no in-house players to extend (besides the Milkman and Pony Boy). The core of the next competitive Twins team will be making league minimum for most of the rest of the decade. Most of those guys aren't on the major league team yet. The Twins could not afford to trot out a AAAA team again without risking long-term damage to their brand.
