  1. Seriously. You're not going to beat the Yankees most days with 2 runs. When you've got bases loaded with zero outs you expect more than one. This should be a much more lopsided game than it is, and unfortunately I think we might need it to be later on.
  2. Wait. I mean, I'm happy for him. Or whatever. Shut up.
  3. What the hell? Stop giving up hits to Garrett Goddamn Cooper.
  4. Oh good, another reviewable play.
  5. Really, really, really have to stop leaving men on base.
  6. It would have been a very hard challenge to win, but 1) it was a really big spot with potential for many more runs, and 2) it's very hard to get any closer than that. I think you challenge. Still, I'm happy that neither of these things mattered.
  7. Very well done, Kepler/Superman. Saving the day!
  8. It didn't look like a very good slide, did it? Though it's hard to second guess the players on exactly which type of slide to do when they have a split second to make the decision. Oh well.
  9. This could just be homer bias, and I clearly don't have the fortitude to watch a replay ten times like Riverbrian on a routine fly ball to Robbie Grossman, but... it reeeeeally seemed like he had his foot blocking the plate well before he got that ball.
  10. Man, you gotta get more than that from bases loaded with no outs. I kind of agree with the above posters about the lack of a challenge. What else do you think you are going to use it for that'll be closer than that?
  11. I know I'm getting into but-Sano-is-athletic territory here, but I agree. Vargas is a very big man, but for a very big man, he's not bad at defense. You can't expect him to move around like a shortstop, but he generally does what needs to be done. Mauer on the other hand is flat out good at first base.
  12. Doesn't the catcher have to move out of the way of the plate? Did he? What's the ruling from people who know the rules better than I do?
  13. Dozier poking the ball through the right side of the infield again. Beating that shift.
  14. I don't dislike Vargas, so I hope this isn't taken as a knock on him. But the difference between Mauer's defense at first and Vargas's is day and night. I know there's not much of a positional adjustment for 1B according to WAR and the like, but Mauer has been very, very impressive over there.
  15. That's about as big a turn as you'll ever see from second base.
  16. Is there a central California version of Paul Bunyan?
  17. I love how confused Dick Bremer has been literally every time he's said Garrett Cooper's name. "And ...Garrett ...uh, Cooper, at first base."
  18. 6'7", I read. He'd look normal if Alex Meyer were pitching to him. Or, if we're thinking in other dimensions, if Bartolo Colon were pitching to him.
  19. Great pitch. Good start to the game.
  20. Garrett Cooper is making his debut today and playing first base. I am doing all in my power to be positive about this, even though I grew up with a couple of his older brothers, and they're kinda dickbags. I'll just keep reminding myself it's not his fault.
  21. I guess I wouldn't be that surprised if it took that long, and I think that's how most major league front offices would prefer to operate. But I disagree with "little to lose" before next spring training. If you keep him all offseason, you block up a 40-man spot. The thing you might lose is a prospect.
  22. I get that they're giving him every opportunity to show that he can come back, but I don't see it. I agree with the above posters. Whenever the front office is fully convinced that he can be replaced, or that there's no value there, you give him the Nick Blackburn treatment. That money's gone whether we get anything of value out of him or not. Another thing to think about is the 40-man and 25-man situation. Obviously, not having Hughes on the major league roster gives us another opportunity to have a guy like Busenitz or Curtiss come up and show us what they can do. Similarly, but with a slightly longer view, there are a lot of good young players who will need to be protected this offseason, and even some of the fringier guys (Dereck Rodriguez? Kohl Stewart?) who may not ever make it, I still don't see the wisdom in having a guy like Phil Hughes block them. He is what he is. Who knows what some of those guys will be?
