  1. Nolasco/Santana/Lincy have bad contracts written all over them IMO and both will require draft compensation. No thanks. Haren is having his second straight bad year (this time in the NL) but won't require a long term contract/draft compensation. I would be interested. Johnson is the one guy I would be interested in as long as he doesn't cost the Twins a draft pick. Also, I wouldn't mind Hughes.
  2. You could easily make the argument that Sano or a handful of other prospects for that matter are just as good or better than Buxton. Buxton, Sano, Bradley, Russell, Correa, Lindor, Bogarets and Taveras all have legit #1 arguments. All of these players not only have elite tools but have performed like elite prospects. Buxton just has the best set of tools out of the bunch.
  3. Wasn't a fan of the Twins trying to sign Guerrero. Wasn't a fan of the Twins trying to sign Gonzalez. I would definitely be a fan of the Twins trying to sign this guy. Even though he will be stuck at 1B reports about his bat are insane. Ben Badler suggested he would be a major league above average player with a ceiling higher than that. That, I can get excited about.
  4. I understand why people are talking about Stanton but why are people talking about Fernandez? Because he is a pitcher? The Marlins are not trading Fernandez. They have no financial reason or organizational reason to trade him. If you want to talk about trading for a pitcher Price would be the guy. At least there are rumors about him moving.
  5. I stated in my......first post that I felt.......trading Sano+ would be worth it...... I was just pointing out.....the fact you ignored his current down year in your post.....which inaccurately shows his full career. Any team would be lucky to have a young player like Stanton.
  6. Stanton has been injury prone and is having a down year. .241 BA, only 13 HRs, but does have an OPS of .800. He is still an elite young player seeing he is only 23 but let's not act like their are no rough edges.
  7. Even though this has no backing and the only reason we are talking about it is because the strength of our farm system I will play a long. If we did try to trade for Stanton any deal would have to start with Sano. Marlins have a huge gap at third and tried and failed to fill it this past off season. After Sano you would have to add at least another top 10 system guy and a 10-20 guy. Worth it? Most likely. Fernandez is a pipe dream. The Marlins talent line up with him so their is no point in talking about him. Move on. Now, how about Price? Most experts suggest the Rays will try and trade him next year because of his ever growing price tag.
  8. Hartman talked to Jim Pohlad and he had this to say about the Twins: “We just have to keep working hard and try to develop the players and just be relentless looking for talent — whether it occurs during the offseason in the free-agency market or in the scouting world, we have to be relentless, because maybe we took our eye off the ball.” While the policy of the Twins over the years has been to develop their own players and not go big in the free-agent market, Pohlad said: “That’s definitely something we’d like to pursue because we have to get better. There’s no way [of adding players] that is closed to us orTerry [Ryan, Twins general manager]. … I’m definitely optimistic. Terry is solid and we’re lucky to have him.” Link: StarTribune.com Mobile | News, weather, sports
  9. Stewart pitched two innings today, his first since July 22nd, striking out two, walking one, and giving up no hits. In his massive 12 innings pitched this year Kohl has the stat line of 1.50 ERA, 11K, 2 BB, and has only given up 7 hits.
  10. John Sickels over at minorleagueball did a prospect write up on our own 1-0 starting pitcher Andrew Albers. It was a good write up and worth the read. He gives a brief history of how Albers went from a RP at the university of Kentucky to being a big league starter. Also gives a little scouting report: Prospect of the Day: Andrew Albers, LHP, Minnesota Twins - Minor League Ball
  11. I never suggested he would come cheap. I don't think he will sign cheap.I said if Ryan offers him a quality offer, which suggests one on par with what other teams are offering, he might actually take Ryan's money.
  12. Hughes and Vargas would be solid targets who could make sense. They won't require giant contracts to sign and would obviously be upgrades.
  13. I have not been on the Josh Johnson bandwagon for awhile because of his likely cost, injury history, and cost of a draft pick next year. Because of his injury history and inconsistent performance this year the articles author suggests, " a qualifying offer appears increasingly unlikely even though the Jays are all about draft pick compensation." Ryan said last off season he couldn't give money away. If Ryan offers him a quality offer the fact JJ is from Minnesota and still has family here might help sign him.
  14. Move along to where? A different site? Every other thread has been railroaded into the same dumb conversation. I posted this thread/link so people can talk about their preference in the up coming FAs. Obviously payroll, Ryan's player selection, and history of signings come into it but they aren't the purpose of the thread. I would argue that people who aren't even trying to talk about the main purpose of a thread should "move along".
  15. While the discussion of payroll is obviously a part you figured someone would actually discuss the names on the list. Which no one has.
  16. Mlbtraderumors put out their monthly updated free agent power rankings and here is their top ten: 1. Cano 2. Ellsbury 3. McCann 4. Garza 5. Choo 6. Kuroda 7. Santana (Ervin) 8. Beltran 9. Burnett 10. Utley The article has write ups on all these players and lists 5 other players, 2 pitchers, whom have made the list before. The forum is littered with people complaining about the Twins and free agency so here are your "prizes" for next year. Link to full article with write ups below: 2014 Free Agent Power Rankings: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com
  17. You can point to random exceptions all you want but the reality is that combo rarely gives you more than a #2. Heck, that comparison doesn't even fit. Last time I checked Santana was a lefty while Wacha is a righty, you know, unless the Cards taught him to throw with his other hand.
  18. While you are right scouts have been wrong on where players end up, what else do we have to go by? I haven't seen Guerrero play. Heck, even if I saw how he played I wouldn't know what I was looking for. I can only go by what the international experts say. The two guys who are considered the best at scouting international players, Ben Badler and Jesse Sanchez, both have said he doesn't have the tools for SS and will end up at 2B. Wanting him to play SS doesn't increase his chances of playing the position. Now to your other point. If Guerrero can play a different position at a MLB level I would welcome the addition. The team needs talent. I just don't like what I have read. He sad out all of 2012 and won't be cleared to play till 2014. That's two years off, especially when you are moving to an even more competitive league, is a really long time. I'm all for the Twins adding talent anyway they can but can a person just not like a player? Seeing only 3 teams out of 30 are in on him I'm not the only person out there that doesn't like what I have seen.
  19. Hey look, a perfectly good forum that is getting turned into a payroll argument again....yay.
  20. I'm just using the available data instead of coming up with my own general assumptions. The same study that I took the above stats from also looked into chance to make an impact. Top 5 picks had a 37% chance to have a 10+ War career. That's pretty good. Also, the elephant in the room here is how easy it is to devalue prospects because they aren't proven while assuming big leave players are. While prospects may never reach the bigs they are at least cheap investments. Big leaguers suffer injuries, have a bad year (years), and rarely live up to their contracts. Good teams build via the draft and if you are building through the draft studies have shown the higher the pick, the better.
  21. Hey, it's pretty awesome for me as a Twins fan who lives in Houston! Astros vs Twins tickets are going for about 8-10 bucks! My girlfriend and I can see the whole series for about 50 bucks.
  22. Have you even read his scouting reports? Not a single one that I have read suggests he will stick at SS. All point to a move to 2B.
  23. Buxton back in the lineup. Currently has two walks and a SB.
  24. Do people even want this guy for his ability or just because they want Ryan to spend money? No one is really making the argument that we should sign him because of X tool or that they think he will be Y type of player. If you want him just because other Cubans have been good and because Ryan has money that seems short sited. If you have actually read his scouting reports and like him as a player that's a different thing. I just don't see much to get excited about but maybe that's just me.
  25. Crap shoot? Out of the 900+ players in the first 10 rounds they have a 1/6th chance to make it at least for a cup of coffee. Players drafted in the 3-5 rounds have ~47% chance, 1st round supplemental-2nd round have a 57% chance to make it, and first rounders have a 73% chance to make it. If we break down the first round players drafted 1-5 have a 88% chance to at least make it to the bigs while the rest of the first round is about 70%. There are always exceptions but historically drafting in the top 5 doesn't only increase the chance of the player making it to the bigs but increases the chance of them having an impact. Moral of the story: If you are drafting high, draft real high! That or just don't suck so you don't have to worry about it.
