  1. Where does Benson fit in the lineup when he returns next month?
  2. Good review, although you didn't mention that Salcedo was dealing with an arm problem early this year and has been on the disabled list much of the year. We don't know what he will be like at Fort Myers when healthy. Also, no mention of the two lefties taken in the third and sixth rounds in 2010, Pat Dean and Logan Darnell. Dean is an all-star at Fort Myers and their top starter (after Hermsen moved up), and Darnell has been on a fast track getting to New Britain late last year. Both certainly have the potential to someday be in the Twins starting rotation. As far as how good they can be, the jury is still out.
  3. Excellent take on the current situation. Thanks Nick!
  4. Sorry to say Seth, this is the reason I dreaded you giving up your own site. At least you had the creditability of having some class. In the future, I will no longer be commenting on your site.... Have a good day my friend!
  5. +1, It is amazing Seth that before some of these guys have played their first inning of professional ball some of us already have them destined to repeat next year at ETon. Personally, I am pumped that both of these young men, Boyd and Harrison, will begin their careers at ETon. That tells me the Twins are very high on them.
  6. John, have you inquired who the hotel's insurance carrier is?

Who are the four arbitration eligible players who will get $20mm?
  8. Yes, I do. I also suspect that the person with all the power, Mr. Pohlad, does as well. Please take a look at what Mr. Ryan accomplished last winter. He fixed a horrible bullpen, filled spots for two players we couldn't afford (Kubel and Cuddyer) while also plugging an infield hole with Carroll. That is one good winter. Did he fix the starting rotation, no, because that is one area which most people thought was relatively solid. No way of knowing that his top starter, Baker would miss the entire season.
  9. Grimes signed a bit later than Bryant, but did play last year. He was assigned to Beloit where he hit .225 average in 138 at bats.
  10. There are two good reasons to keep Pinto at Fort Myers. First, he is on the all-star team which is coming up. Let him stay in the FSL and enjoy it. Second, the player moving up will see a lot of bench time while Herrmann plays. Keep the better catcher at Fort Myers where he will play most of the time rather than sit.
  11. It is. Commonly thought to be until next year's draft, but I think it is a specified date shortly before the draft.
  12. 32-33 home runs and 107 RBI
  13. The pitcher hung a breaking ball and Sano put the Snappers ahead of 1st place Wisconsin. Trying to win the final game of this series after losing four straight to Wisconsin over the last ten days. In earlier at bats, Sano had another hit and didn't look good on a couple sliders in the dirt. Game is on MiLB, for those interested.
  14. I have from time to time found Souhan's articles to be excellent. Yes, there are some that kinda make you wonder where he is coming from or getting his information. For the most part, I don't have a problem with him. I also have wondered where all the hatred comes from. I guess a lot of it is that blogs enable people to say things they normally wouldn't, or at least not to the person's face.
  15. Slama is on the disabled list.
  16. Thank you TRex! I have been saying this for years and every time I do, I usually get my head handed to me. As for how many scouts the Twins actually have, the last time I saw the actual number it was over 50. They have area scouts, regional scouts, national scouts, international scouts, hell, they probably have scouts that scout scouts. When a player is drafted, he has been seen by several of their scouts and I suspect in the case of Buxton that would be over a dozen. With this type of coverage, I have to believe there are lots of interesting debates that go on before a final selection is made. Try to look at it like the rankings of Scout and Rivals of high school football players, the 2-3-4-5 star evaluations they give to recruits. Last time I checked, so many of the real stars for the team I follow (Badgers) weren't that highly ranked coming out of high school. In 2006, Scout ranked 100 offensive lineman which didn't include Gabe Carimi, who they gave three stars on a five star scale. None of those 100 turned out to be as good as Carimi, who won the 'Outland Trophy' as college's best offensive lineman his senior year before being taken in the first round by da'Bears. Different sport, same results. You have confidence in your scouts and pick the players they believe in. The outside sources are nice for fans and help us get to know who we should be following. But whether someone is ranked 10-20-50 spots better or worse by the fan services shouldn't bring the wrath we often see brought on the Twins and their management.
  17. No one talks about something Revere brings to the Twins that I believe is very important...energy! Some combination of that smile and speed just seems to get things happening. I don't know if anyone else agrees, but I see the Twins winning more when he is in the lineup every day. Not necessarily the offensive numbers and certainly not the arm, but he just brings added energy that makes the game more fun which seems to lead to more wins.
  18. Thanks Seth, brings back lots of memories.
  19. Mr. Boras just cost his client millions of dollars. Of course he can always go back to Stanford for his senior year and get less.
  20. The Twins normally carry about 30 players at Elizabethton and up to 35 in the GCL. That is 65. I show 49 players remaining in EST from this group (not including players there rehabbing). In the last eight years, they have signed a low of 20 players (2004) and a high of 33 (last year). The norm appears to be around 26, however, has been higher the last two years, 31 and 33. They appear to always seriously attempt to sign their top ten to fifteen rounds, which would be 13-18 players. After that they sign most of the college seniors, a few of the juniors and J2 kids and usually surprise by signing one or two high school players from the later rounds. With 49 in camp (the ones I see that you missed which I believe are still around are Marcus Solberg and Junior Subero, unless I missed their releases). You also don't have any of the group coming up this year from the DSL, which should be led by Felix Jorge. The size of this group varies, however, is normally at least a half dozen and has been as high as mid-teens. So if we have 49 in camp, say at least five coming up from the DSL and the average number signed, 26, that is a total of 80 players. They will likely put 65 on the two teams, leaving 15. A few of these and a few of the draft picks will move up (good example is Vargas when his suspension is over), say leaving ten. One can further assume a few will be injured and go on the DL, but they will likely be making another cut of somewhere between five and ten players.
  21. Good analysis Nick, There is one major difference between Buxton and Hicks, about $4.5mm or so. Personally, I was hoping the Twins would get a stud starter with the #2 pick. Unfortunately, that guy wasn't out there. One question I do have, do people think that Appel dropped to 8th because of Scott Boras?
  22. John, I believe they are two good starters away from competing. We are seeing that Scott Diamond will be an effective starter, one capable of filling one of the #3-#5 spots in the rotation. If you read my stuff every week, you know I believe that Liam Hendriks is going to be very good and should be back and pitching well later in the year. That is two, lets say #3 and #4. The fifth starter can come from a combination of Walters, DeVries, Blackburn, Gibson and Baker. I believe that at the end of the year (October) when he is beginning to throw, the Twins will work out something on Baker's contract and he will be back. Will he be ready on opening day, unlikely. Gibson could, but both should be ready during the season to fill in if one of the starting five fails or is injured. That leaves two spots open. Yes, they are #1 and #2 which he will have to fill. As I look at the rest of the team, it is solid for next year. Fill those two spots and the Twins should be very good. Can they possibly do that by trading someone like Span for a young stud who will fill one of those two spots...maybe. In that case Mr. Ryan will have to evaluate what he has in the outfield and at the top of the order. Another option would be to package Liriano for a young starter in July...assuming the Frankie we saw the last two times out keeps showing up for another 7-8 starts!
  23. John, I expect that Mr. Ryan views the Twins much different than most of us. He is looking at putting the Twins back into contention next year. I expect that he sees a team that is really pretty good throughout its everyday lineup, assuming they stay healthy. The bullpen fixes he did have worked very well and there are four/five arms in Rochester about major league ready. The problem, the starting rotation including the health of Pavano/Baker. I think he sees a team that needs to add two solid starters and they can be back. If he is thinking like that, he isn't going to be trading away any of his better players just to be doing something. Yes, he will listen to phone calls and if someone blows him away for Span or another player...he certainly will listen. But I suspect we are going to see a lot less moves between now and July 31 than most people expect.
