    Average is overrated yes, but there's no explaining away a sub-200 average. There is a minimum level of putting the bat on the ball required, and he's far short of exceeding it. And the slugging is very worrisome, because major league players cannot continue to post levels that meager. A .600 OPS isn't even acceptable for the majority of bench players, let alone a starter.
