  1. **sigh** Just because they had a good night does not mean they are a good hitting team; they just had a good or lucky day. When a blind squirrel finds an acorn, it doesn't mean the squirrel is no longer blind; it just had a good or lucky day. Hence the analogy. And the thesis others are making is that Frankie's numbers last outing might not have looked so good if he had faced a team that consistently hits better - such as Texas. Some of the pitches that got by Oakland hitters for strikes might have been put into play by a stronger lineup. We know from bitter experience earlier this season that sometimes anemic hitting can make even questionable pitching look good. That's why some of us are waiting to see if the results are reproduceable before we proclaim that Liriano is back.
  2. Oakland - last in the AL in team batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, and OPS.
  3. Is anybody really shocked that Appel turned down an underslot offer? That being said, I don't see how the Pirates sign him - even if he did a 180 and took $6M, that would just about wipe out Pittsburgh's bonus pool.
  4. Even the blind squirrel finds an acorn once in a while.
  5. My guess is most of them get virtually nothing - just the chance to play pro ball and maybe make it to the bigs.
  6. Doesn't that apply to just about anybody taken after the 10th round? These will be either high school kids who may sign or may go on to college, or college players designed to fill out rosters, and who knows, you just might get lucky with one of them (like Blackburn 29th round 2001 or Punto 33rd round 1997).
  7. Gardy likes to make sure everybody gets some playing time, and Mastoianni hasn't played much recently. You have to give people a few swings every few days just to have them keep their timing. Personally, I would send him back down to AAA for more regular playing time, but I'm not sure who I would bring up to replace him.
  8. I think it's a legitimate question and I started a thread in the Twins Talk forum. So far the consensus seems to be that, with Blackburn and Liriano still so inconsistent, we might need both DeVries and Hendriks. Now there's a scary thought.
  9. Again tonight DeVries had an average start - not terribly bad, but not terribly good either. Once again he battled gamely for 5 innings, keeping the Twins in the game, but ran out of gas in the 6th. Hendriks, on the other hand, pitched 7 solid shutout innings in Rochester and, the previous game he pitched being an exception, has done quite well. Is it time to start thinking about switching them around - bringing Hendriks back up to the bigs and sending DeVries back to Rochester? I know he's a local guy and some are cheering for him because of that, but in all fairness he's only been borderline effective, and a big-league starter has GOT to be able to get beyond the 5th inning on a regular basis. Hendriks had his own rough patch when he started with the club up here, but for the most part he's done well in Rochester. Has he been there long enough to get what he needed to be ready for another shot? What do you all think?
  10. Again I ask, how much did Buxton cost over slot?
  11. So does anybody have any stats on what percentage of draftees actually end up signing? Of the 43 players we select this year, how many will actually join the system?
  12. OK, why not? I'm game.
  13. So, did they have to pay overslot to get Buxton, and this is their way of making up the difference?
  14. So does DeVries go out for the 6th? You've got Liriano tomorrow and Blackburn wednesday - sure would like the bullpen rested, just in case...
  15. His fielding actually hasn't been that bad this year - tonight's gaffe excepted - but his bat needs to wake up a bit. He hit better the last two years, and if he can regain that, he's a solid part of the lineup.
  16. **sigh** it's gonna be one of those days...
  17. Good first inning for DeVries - slightly more pitches than I like, but solid start.
  18. I was a little, but it also sounded like he was having problem with his audio and couldn't hear what the studio was asking him, so it is probably nothing. I hope...
  19. He can always go back and play his senior year in college and try again next year. Problem is, he loses leverage then; drafted seniors have almost none.
  20. Pittsburgh has a total bonus cap of $6.5M; how much of that do you think Appel is getting?
  21. Only problem with that is the draft is 40 rounds long - somebody will take him in a later round, just on a flyer, which makes him unable to shop his services as a free agent.
  22. Baseball America has one - http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/draft/news/2012/2613398.html
  23. At this point you wonder if Appel-Boras were asking for significantly above slot, and don't know what to do now.
  24. It looks like Appel picked the wrong agent.
