  1. Wow. Having Deduno in the rotation has got to play into the intimidation factor. How many guys does he hit a game?
  2. Didn't somebody tell Deduno that Twins pitchers are not allowed to pitch seven full innings?
  3. Yes, and like Magellan he didn't make it to the end.
  4. I don't actually write sermons - my preaching is all extemporaneous. I do have an outline and I plan what I want to say, but then I just go with the flow.
  5. OK, Hicks has been developing a trend of hitting a home run after making a great defensive play - let's see if that continues.
  6. Wow! I'm starting to believe in Hicks's defense.
  7. Well, now I can sleep tonight. I've been lying awake tossing and turning wondering what Dick Bremer and Bert Blyleven put on their hot dogs.
  8. Those are overrated - stream of consciousness is the way to go these days...
  9. Here's a mixture of even more fantasy and reality - Span cf Mauer c Braun lf Cabrera 3b Fielder 1b Morneau dh Parmelee rf Dozier 2b Florimon ss Verlander p
  10. I think I need to respectfully disagree with you on this. I think the "average fan" you know is different than the "average fan" I know. I went through a good part of my life watching Twins baseball on TV and, more relevantly, listening to it on radio. I had absolutely no interest in learning the game, nor in advanced statistics. I just wanted to be entertained. Most of the Twins fans I know (or knew, now that I have relocated) fell into that category, not the one you describe. It was only when I started coming to this website that I even developed an interest in going beyond the pure entertainment aspect, and even at that I have not developed the interest in advanced statistics that many on this site have.
  11. I don't know if this would fall under a daily game recap thing or not, but one area I'd like to increase my knowledge about is in-game strategy. We spend a lot of time on this site talking about roster moves, past present & future, which is great, and a lot of time discussing advanced metrics (which, to be honest, I'm kinda blah on, but to each their own), but not as much time on in-game strategy. That's something that maybe could be addressed using examples from recent games, things such as when you bunt in late innings and when you let the player hit away; what are the advantages and disadvantages of pulling the infield in; which base should outfielder be throwing to and why, just exactly how does one put together a lineup - what qualities are desired in each position. etc. I know a lot of people who post on this site played the game and coached/managed, so this may be old news to them, but for someone who has basically been a spectator all his life, this is stuff I'm just starting to pick up on.
  12. Nothing has changed? Forget about runs allowed and runs scored, just for a moment. After 48 games last year, the Twins were 16-32, for a .333 winning %. Today we are 20-28, for a .417 winning %. That's a 25% improvement over last year. This doesn't mean the Twins are a good club, and I'm not making that argument. But, if as is often said, your record tells you who you really are, then we are better than last year at this point in the season.
  13. I thought at the start of the year we would end up in the mid-to-upper 70s in wins. I still feel that way. We've just been through a 10-game losing streak that knocked the pace down a bit - before that we were playing .500 ball. I suspect the final reality will be in between the two. The rotation will not remain as bad as it has been - the hitting will not remain as bad as it has been.
  14. All that glitters is not gold. 'Nuf said.
  15. It was another average week for Kyle, although a good showing as DH on Thursday perked his numbers up a bit, going 3-for-4 with a double. In three other games behind the plate he went 2-for-10, and grounded into several double plays throughout the week. Defensively he threw 2 out stealing on Friday and participated in a double play, but also gave up 3 stolen bases on Wednesday, with Salcedo pitching. Overall he is at .361/.439/.486 for the year and he appears to have notched up his defense over last year, throwing out 38% stolen base attempts. A solid year all in all, but with several other good catchers working their way up the system it will still be a challenge to stand out. Post-Script: Just heard that Kyle was promoted to AA New Britain today. Glad to see that his performance this year has been noted. Could this be the start of the next Colabello-type story?
  16. He also struck out last night.
  17. I don't know if they can become the low A affiliate - I doubt they would be allowed to join the organized minor leagues. But, can they serve as a secondary, unofficial grooming place for potential players? The Twins see someone who is in indy ball who looks interesting, but there is not room in the organized minors for them, so they sign a side deal with them, have them play in St. Paul, and if they truly develop then move them into the official system? I don't know - just wondering.
  18. I guess the big question I have right now is not why did the Twins expose Benson to waivers, but why did Texas take him? Next year he's right back where he would be - needing to be on the major league roster or being exposed to waivers again. Do the Texas Rangers think they can turn him around in half a season and make him major-league ready? My guess is they are thinking he can still be a major league player someday but know it will be another couple of years down the road before he is ready. Are they hoping that next year, when he doesn't make the opening day roster, they can put him through waivers again, have him clear (he almost did this time), take him off the 40-man, and then have some breathing space to work with him? That's the only thing I can think of. How much minor league service time does Benson have - how long before he is eligible to be a minor league free agent?
  19. I wouldn't say approve, but frankly I'm not that big on Benson. I started following the Twins minor league system last year, so I never followed his career in the low minors when he was a top prospect with high hopes. Based on what I've seen in the last two years, and on the reality that we were probably going to lose him next year anyway when he was out of options and still not major-league ready, I guess I just don't have the same sense of loss that some have who followed his career for much longer and at one time saw a regular center fielder for the big league club.
  20. Just because you have no doubt doesn't mean it's true. But if this helps you work out your frustrations...
  21. Did you find that on Baseball-Reference or on Fangraphs?
  22. Statement two would be appropriate if statement one was factual, but as statement one is a guess and not a fact, statement two doesn't hold.
