  1. Don't worry, they should have the #1 pick next year.
  2. You know, you look at the box score and see that a catcher (Butera) threw more strikeouts than the starter, and that kinda says it all, doesn't it.
  3. So now that the Milwaukee series is winding down and the Twins to back to AL foes for the next 2+ weeks, do the Twins stay with 12 pitchers or do they go back to 13? The starting pitching has improved somewhat of late, with Pavano getting healthier, Diamond being a pleasant surprise (so far), and Walters holding his own. There are still big question marks going forward, however, with Marquis, Blackburn & Liriano all struggling. So what happens next? Do you hope the string of decent starts continues or do you plan for the worst and beef up the bullpen with an extra person?
  4. They have 39 - they have 19 position players: Butera, Doumit, Mauer, Carroll, Casilla, Dozier, Morneau, Nishioka, Parmelee, Valencia, Arcia, Benson, Komatsu, Mastroianni, Plouffe, Revere, Span, Tosoni, Willingham It looks like the "official" list on the Twins website is incorrect - Parmelee is omitted. He was optioned to Rochester, not outrighted, so he is still on the 40-man.
  5. So basically he would fit right in with the Twins rotation.
  6. But wait - isn't this going to completly screw up Gardenhire's plans for the season??!? Shouldn't they have brought up Rivera, so they can have that 3rd catcher on the roster?
  7. They have an opening on the 40-man.
  8. He does have a .333 OBP. The only higher in the lineup are Willingham (who you want clean-up) and Mauer (who you want 2nd or 3rd).
  9. I would go the other way - I'm more worried about Fister than Porcello. Besides, maybe Blackburn will have a surprise good outing. What's that saying about the blind squirrel and the nut?
  10. He wanted Marquis to eat up some innings - wouldn't want to burn out and overwork that 13-man pitching staff.
  11. Might as well give Span a rest - he's started all but 1 game this season, and he's hitting .205 over the last 10 games.
  12. Could this be the team that actually convinces MLB to change their policy and just admit that sometimes a franchise doesn't deserve representation in a game featuring the best (or at least most popular) players?
  13. If I count them correctly, they actually have an opening on the 40-man, so it wouldn't require DFAing anybody. Of course, they may want to do it anyway, to preserve future options.
  14. Would the Twins promote either Arcia or Michael? That would give New Britain only 11 pitchers and 14 batters. Could they be planning to promote a reliever from Fort Myers to replace Oliveros?
  15. And just like that, baseball is fun again!
  16. Willingham had to adjust on a fly in the 1st too - must be something going on with the wind tonight. Still, I've seen Span get those before. I guess with him you tend to expect more.
  17. Sano is not ready. Granted, he is leading Beloit in home runs, RBI, slugging pct and OPS. He's also leading Beloit in errors. He needs more time.
  18. He went 1-4 yesterday, so he is 1-12 aggregate.
  19. As much as I hate it, I think you have to stay with Plouffe too. I certainly wouldn't bring Valencia back up, nor Burroughs. Plouffe has a lower average, but higher OBP - he gets walks. And Valencia's defense is not so much greater than it is worth losing that with a switch. If Plouffe went down with an injury, I think you're only option is to promote Chang (who is having a decent year in Rochester) temporarily and start working the trade/waiver wires and hope you get lucky.
  20. To be honest, I think it would depend on what kind of numbers he put up in college. If he had had super years and was an all-american, then yes, he could be viewed a disappointment for where he currently is at. If, though, he had been just a so-so college player and it looked like he was starting to bloom, then I would feel better. As it is, all we have to compare him to is the earlier expectations of high school numbers and early pro career.
  21. Did anybody else hear this? I was listening to the Twins pre-game on radio, and they were talking to a front office type (Ryan?) and he was asked when the Twins would go back to a more normal 12-pitcher roster. He said probably when Morneau was ready to come off the DL. Reprieve for Parmelee? Who then is on the block to get sent down - Blackburn? I saw they were thinking about using Swarzak & Duensing for spot starts - 5th rotation slot by committee?
  22. Personally I'm going to blame this whole debacle of a season on the trees. When they opened Target Field, they had those pine trees in centerfield, giving the park some atmosphere. They won 94 games. Then the hitters complained, they took the trees out, and they've stunk ever since.
  23. I guess I'm wondering if it just makes sense to make a change (after the season) for the sake of freshness. Gardy has done well (I know some question that) but he has been there longer than any other current serving manager (with the exception of Sciosia). Perhaps his approach and "voice" has just gotten a bit stale. I am a minister by trade, and I see a parallel with serving a church. While there are many pastors who serve 20,30, even 40 years in one place, most of the research shows that after 10-15 years in one place you do hit a point of diminishing returns. It's easy to fall into habits and patterns that may or may not work for the future; it's easy to get comfortable and get stale. It's good for the church and for the pastor to move on in different directions, so both can continue to grow.
  24. Check the club's website, www.redwingsbaseball.com. Click on roster and you'll see them there.
  25. I'll admit I'm new to following the Twins minor-league prospects. Can anybody fill me in on this Shawn Roof who played for New Britain today? This is the first time I've seen his name on a roster. Is he a new signing? From extended spring training?
