  1. I'd like to think things like this thread can help spur him into action . Torii Hunter has seemingly come back from the dead, why not Joe, too?
  2. It gets sadder still: Updated 39 game "hot streak" slashline: .268/.364/,369/(.733) wRC+ 104 By contrast- Ben Revere season totals: .304/343/.371/(.713) wRC+ 97 Mauer season SLG is .370... wRC+ 92 Mauer SLG during his "hot streak"- and for the season- is lower than Revere's season SLG?
  3. Or perhaps a little more than slightly below average? MLB average slash line for 1st Basemen: .258/.334/.441/(.775) wRC+ 111 Joe Mauer 2015 slash line thru 9/17/15: .269/.341/.375/(.716) wRC+ 94
  4. Uhh, here's the slashline during the current 37-game streak: .282/.372/.387 wRC+ 111 This current "hot" streak is fairly comparable to Joe's final numbers of his two worst seasons, 2014 and the"bilateral leg weakness" year, 2011.
  5. Thanks Bob. That's good to know, as Cabbage appeared to perhaps be the most athletic position player taken in the draft. Sounds like lots of time in the training room for Trey- that should keep him out of trouble, and perhaps have the combined value of nipping this problem early and keeping him out of trouble down the road.
  6. Roy Smalley isn't necessarily my cup of tea as a broadcaster, but this is a guy with more MLB pedigree and his own professional experience- and the resultant qualifications to discuss the science of hitting- than anyone else I can think of on the local scene. Buxton has started slowly at virtually every new level along his developmental path- and then proceeded to master that level in short order. 121 PAs is way too soon to draw meaningful conclusions other than that he's in an extended adjustment period to the level of the pitching. Right now he's strictly guessing early in the count, and can't recognize breaking balls out of the zone late in the count- as Rob Antony has oft-stated- there's nothing else really close to the level of major league pitching. The only way he can take better control of his MLB ABs, is by experiencing more MLB ABs. I'm pretty sure the combination of 1) facing nothing but MLB pitchers, plus 2) the daily input from hitting coaches, video/cage work and peers, plus 3) his own talent and self-driven work ethic will help him turn the corner at the plate in short order. He'll end up the year with close to 200 PAs this year, let's revisit where he's at once he crosses 300 more PAs next season. I think his professional history strongly suggests we'll be very pleased with his BB%, OBP and OPS.
  7. Roy Smalley noted upon Buxton's second call-up that "there's nothing else for Buxton to learn in the minors", and I tend to agree. He OPS'd at .986 in his brief stint in AAA. It's painful at times to watch him struggle, but getting close to 200 MLB PAs and working directly with the major league hitting coaches as well as his helpful peers is the best way to prepare him for 2016 and beyond. No reason to be careful with Buck, this kid's psyche is solid.
  8. Not as a pitcher. He just switched to pitching in 2014.
  9. Ugly announcers. Ugly refereeing. Ugly coaches. Ugly game. Who's aged worse, Berman? or... Peterson? Who's holding the real Bridgewater hostage?
  10. What? No Appy League Pitcher of the Year- Dereck Rodriguez?
  11. Interesting... Blankenhorn is invited, but not Trey Cabbage? Nice to see Kendrick, Arraez and Palacios in the mix.
  12. Thanks for posting. This quote is prime example for the extra value derived from drafting an obviously talented kid with the born-with-a-glove-in his hand acumen of baseball pedigree: A 19 year old who has the wherewithal to know what an obscure Class A reliever is going to throw -- - by Reading The Pitch Out Of His Hand- and knowing the situational, risk-reward value of stealing 3rd, in that critical situation? And it's telling that Jake Mauer gives him the green light in that critical situation. The second quote (and his performance in crunch time to back up those words- he not only had 3 big hits and the SB, he also had 3 fantastic plays at SS) is reminiscent of Kirby Puckett. Someone noted how skinny he looks in the videos from the game. In truth, he looks like he's playing in the body of a 16 year old, not 19. That only can portend well for Gordon's continued upside. I think we're seeing the chrysalis bursting open on a new fan favorite.
  13. I dunno, their pitching, being fully healthy now, plus Brantley, Kipnis and the addition of Lindor make them a pretty decent team.- statistically much better team hitting and pitching numbers than the Twins. One that will be a threat to the Twins for the next few years. But I think you're right that even just 3-4 head-to-head should be enough to hold them off.
  14. And Cleveland should worry the Twins. 12-4 over the last 16 games, while the Twins are 9-7 in the same stretch. 7 head-to-head games left- four at Cleveland in the second to last series of the season. The IIndians have much bettter pitching and hitting statistics, over the full season and the previous 3 weeks. Of course, the Twins have defied the odds all season, no reason they can't continue as the Team of Destiny for the last 3 weeks. (The Indians/Tigers double rainout this weekend continues to keep the breaks working in the Twins favor).
  15. AS always, great, great stuff, JC. (As the old saying goes... "Whatever they're paying you, it's not enough" ) Good point about the coaching staff, I seem to remember a conversation with you in April about a pretty bare Kenels cupboard for 2015 and low expectations on my part. The interviews with Henry Bonilla have really impressed me, he sounds like he's a deep thinker about the pitching craft and a major league pitching coach position is perhaps somewhere in his future if he continues to demonstrate his recent success. I was going to ask about Anderson and omitted that question. Immediately thrown into the high leverage role upon signing. Does he look like yet another Indy League Twins-find with a fast upward trajectory?

Thanks for the clarification. Was the "report" cited definitive, or just a rumor?
  18. Sorry, that was for everybody, but was your spelling self-correction of "Morgan" related to your OCD?
  19. Barry Bonds Hawk Harrelson Tug McGraw And how is it possible for Go-Go to be left out of this list?

  21. Great stuff, JC. If you can indulge me with a few follow-up questions if you have the time or inclination... Great to hear the opinions on Navarreto's future. I know Stuart Turner never played in the Midwest League so you may not have eyeballed him. But it's clear the Twins like him alot... I'm wondering if you've heard any staff/management offer defensive comps of Turner's college polish vs. Navarreto's high school athletic upside? Do you have any thoughts on Navarreto's progression at the plate over the course of the season? Speaking of plate progression, I had very faint hope that Nick Gordon's progress with the bat this year might have given the Twins the inclination to consider Gordon for an AFL nod. Gordon has hit .307 and OPS'd at .761 since May 30. It appears that he has the major league chops @ SS, how would you rate his ceiling projection at this point of his career at the plate? Any early thoughts on Cedar Rapids' likely CF next year- 9th round pick, LaMonte Wade? Finally, this year's Kernels squad looks like a good future source of the plugger/grinder type of players that are indispensable to a successful major league team in order to complement the marquee names. I don't know if you've done this or not, but do you have a Top 5 position player/Top 5 pitcher list of those 10 current Kernel players most likely to make the major league club some day?
  22. I'm sure the Twins' coaching staff is talking about it, if they aren't doing projections and game-planning than they're not doing their jobs. I think everyone should understand that this is all hypothetical, and the chance for the Twins making an extended successful run is still quite a long shot. A team with this series of question marks that make up the starting staff has to try to come up with any kind of small advantage. wherever it can be derived.*** Why can't the teams' fans do some of their own projecting and thinking out loud, as well? It's been 5 long seasons in baseballs' hinterlands; for many fans, it's fun to finally be able to do some meaningful What If-ing . *** For example, the rotation is currently set up for Milone to start the WC game. After tonight's 4th inning implosion by Tommy, the Twins can't honestly look at anyone on this staff as their sure-thing, post-season, give-him-the-ball and get out of the way, stopper.--- except for the hope and a prayer that Phil Hughes has somehow re-found his 2014 mojo.
  23. Good to know. Was it a playoff-series-clinching start?
  24. Even better would be to maximize Santana's remaining available value and moving up his last start to 10/1 vs. Cleveland and have him available for a possible Game 163 if that's how it looks like it might shake out- if he were to pitch on Friday, 10/2- there likely would be no way he could come back and start on Monday, 10/5 on only two days rest. (Assuming Hughes is on "all systems go" after next Tuesday, Hughes then would move up two days- still pitching on normal rest interval- and take Duffey's spot on September 20. September 21 is an off day, so as in your schedule, Santana would still be pitching on 9/22 on regular rest, as well- it seems pretty obvious after you spent all that Free Agent money that you would try to put your best asset out there, who's only had arm-wear over the last 2.5 months- over a raw rookie who they are already very concerned about exceeding his inning limitations... Put Duffey on long relief duty/spot starter duty assigned to throw on either Pelfrey's or Hughes' scheduled dates, should either of them falter, between starts or in-game).
  25. Berardino has been known to be wrong before. Partly a function in that he is a prolific shoot from the hip tweeter. At least he made the correction when proven to be wrong.
