  1. Based on the last two offseasons, I think you should be asking this question of the Twins FO. Their actions seem to say "No!".
  2. 1) Again, and again. These signings were REPLACEMENTS, not ADDITIONS. 2) My, that is a ringing endorsement. 3) Yes. Why? Why? There were multiple options for short(er)-term deals and huge payroll flexibility. It can be argued that it would be MORE prudent to spend money to fix and fill the gaping holes- competitive games into September if it works out, flippable talent in July if it doesn't. 4) I can't understand why "real" Twins fans are so willing to accept year-after-year of FO false hopes being raised of possibly "being competitive for third place", given the FO's apparent need for "prudency" in a "reduced budget." This is simply unacceptable with the existing core players and the available payroll room. The season thus far demonstrates how close this team could be to legit contender status--- if--- they would have simply stuck to the "deal" they offered to the public to get their stadium built.
  3. The thinking and logic on this can easily go both ways. No reason to waste years playing above your skill level that could have been spent helping the major league club.
  4. You'll have to explain why it was a "dumb move". Philadelphia offered Drew $2.6M in 1997, Boras said "no" and Drew went back in the draft in '98, signed for $7M with the Cardinals and was playing in the major leagues by September of that year.
  5. Like our chances tonight against Dempster. The Twins are batting .320/.393/.493/.889 against Dempster for his career. He has only gone 7 innings twice in 6 starts so far this year, and the Red Sox bullpen is in severe disarray.
  6. Carroll quickly turning into "Every Other Day" Jamey. He's batting .400 (8/20), with a .455 OBP since getting his semi-regular assignments on April 21.
  7. It appears to be an institutional economic decision- ie, generally, with some few exceptions, regardless of your Minor League performance, you follow a career path of 5-6 years in the minors, 3 years to Arb-eligibility, 6 years in the majors before reaching Free Agency. Perhaps there are other mid-market teams that do it the same way, but it shouldn't be this way in Minnesota- based on the rationale the Twins put forward once they got their new stadium- and particularly now that there appear to be multiple fast-track candidates in the system.
  8. Wake Chief up to start a new "Fire Gardy!" thread...
  9. I think it's safe to say that Parmelee has crossed the Kubelesque standard for RF defense.
  10. Interesting to note, all four of the co-stars who played the Germans were Jewish.
  11. So you say they need a closer? That guy Tim Wood is available...
  12. Just more of the same-old, same old, as back when Punto, Cuddyer, Kubel, Young, et al, would repeatedly bungle in the field, at the plate, and/or on the basepaths, and all Gardy seemed to note in postgame was the "unacceptable" missed cutoff, missed sign, missed tag, et al, of some rookie or AAAA player. Lots of fires to light, not enough matches
  13. Hear here! on Carroll and his elfin goodness. True professional, glad to see he's getting some regular PAs. Glad to see you've come around on Plouffe, Halsey; he's a far better player than he was just one year ago to the day, when he was batting, get ready for this: .103/.286/.205/.491
  14. I like Pelf a lot, a midwestern guy who is very self-conscious about pulling his own weight for his teammates. And I agree with your assessment, hoping for the 2 best possible outcomes. I'm afraid that the first year back from TJ most often means a lot of 1 step forward, 2 step back frustrations. The odds are probably 50-50 that he'll have to go down for a short-term rehab assignment- hopefully today's performance is indicative that the odds will change in his favor.
  15. Correlation does not imply causation, but it does waggle its eyebrows suggestively and gesture furtively while mouthing: "look over there!" Twins SP ERA for 2012: 5.40 Twins SP ERA for 2013: 5.01 Has the starting pitching improved? Yes, marginally, it has. It's been much more pleasurable watching so far this year, not constantly being down 7-0 after 3 innings. But it isn't exactly time to break out the marching bands in celebration and placing multiple nominees from the current Twins SP staff for the Twins Hall of Fame.
  16. Sano and Buxton lead their leagues in the key batting stats, as well as other stats. Their triple-stat league-leading slash lines through Saturday's games are simply otherwordly: Sano: .446/.755/.1201 Buxton: .504/.681/.1185 But there's one more player in the I League who quietly is dominating AAA hitting. The fleet of foot, 29 year old MLB strikeout King, also posesses an incredible triple-stat league-leading slash line: Clete Thomas: .476/.700/.1176 Clete's K rate is also now down in the low 20% range, well down from his 2010-12 AAA/MLB rate in the 30% range. Assuming Mastro is on the shelf for some time to come, and also assuming that Thomas passes all of his drug tests, does he get another shot as the 4th/5th OF spot on the major league club?
  17. 4 pitchers starting on Sunday in the organization, all 4 directly relevant to the present, and very near future of the major league club. While May is positioning himself for a sooner than later promotion, the position player breakouts are also fast becoming fodder for speculation of their own advancements. Do Petterson and Polanco have what it takes to inevitably challenge those (say by sometime in 2014 or 15) currently blocking them for a major league spot? The minor league show is fast becoming more interesting, intriguing and entertaining than the major league club. Kudos to you, Seth, and all the other TD writers for your in-depth coverage.
  18. By what measurable metric am I wrong? I have clearly pointed out that were Buxton to maintain the standard that Trout set at the same level, which he is now surpassing, than that should merit him for consideration to stay on the fasttrack to the majors. The eyewitnesses in Cedar Rapids concur that he compares favorably to, if not better than, Trout at the same point in time. The Twins clearly needs more depth in CF at the upper levels of the organizaton. 4 players chosen high in the 2010 draft are now key players on their respective teams. I brought up 3 position players chosen within the first 3 picks of their respective drafts, plus Trout at 25. These were the top players in their respective years, as Joe Mauer was, when he was drafted. Not players chosen 44th. Why is it so controversial to suspect that Buxton can have his career move on the same track as the others mentioned?
  19. Fasttrack, here we go! It worked out well for 3 teams in the playoff hunt last season (Angels, Nats and Orioles). No reason that both can't get an extended call-up next season, and ready to go full-time in '15.
  20. Thanks, this info is out there, ubiquitously. I'm not understanding why people are doubting it.
  21. He might have a nice swing, but he's demonstrably not right in that Harper/Machado/Harvey/Sale range of talent, which is what I was referring to, and which I still think Buxton has a good chance to be.
  22. Man From the Future FYI Bureau has apparently come to us as an Oracle to the vast, skeptical, doubting-Correia masses in Time-Present. Bottom Line- We will simply not be making any complaints for at least 2 more starts. I'd appreciate if he can keep giving us the heads-ups on just how long this mirage will last.
  23. You'll have to cite evidence that this is how "every team operates." Whereas, there is a boatload of evidence that his is how the Twins operate. And I do have a decent knowledge of how sports medicine works, none of it is/was "weird" (I've had multiple players diagnosed with lower limb stress reactions, leading to anywhere from recommending 15 days complete rest to complications ultimately leading to stress fractures, wiping out entire seasons). The Twins top spokespeople in the broadcast booth, on a daily basis, provided repeated evidence that there was every indication that his injury most certainly wasn't a minor one. The willingness to begin the season, "willfully", with only one healthy and available CF, who was making the jump from AA besides, is on the Twins.
