  1. Or study even harder the other many teams that are and have been generally successful in their FA acquisitions and ask the questions why it has been demonstrated that building from every possible avenue, including FA, works for them.
  2. No need to thank us readers, you're reportage is first rate and the absolute best tonic on yet another miserable night at Target Field. Since you've witnessed a few of Sano's games since his arrival, are you picking up any significant differences in his approach at the plate of late? I noticed that his walks and strikeouts were nearly equal not that long ago, but now, he's no longer getting the walks, but the power and average are soaring with a few additional strikeouts. You noticed that he's now 4th on the team in HRs. I'll go one further....what do you think his chances are to catch the Eastern League leader in Home Runs? He now only trails the guy from the Phillies AA team, 15-6. I noticed you passed on asking the obvious questions to Jeff Smith in favor of a different approach. Good for you. Your reporting is reassuring in its clarity and exposition from Jeff Smith about May. This sounds like not even a bump in the road on his progression towards major league starter..... But, going back to the 500 lb. Dominican elephant in the room... don't you get the feeling that "everybody" in the Rock Cats braintrust from Smith on down, knows what extraordinary talent they have in Sano? And that they have a firm handle on what they have to accomplish, together, over the next 2 months? And hopefully, that Sano, in garnering their full developmental attention, as he is ever-quickly becoming acclimated to Connecticut, is feeding off that attention to detail and stays right on the fast track?
  3. I deserve the cheap shot as the heavy price to pay for an even cheaper "I told you so". And I feel bad for him personally, too.
  4. Thing of beauty. Sano with 6 HRs has a legitimate chance to be the first half HR leader in the FSL and the season-long HR champ in the Eastern League. The EL leader only has 15. FYI, his OPS is now at .983 with a .655 SLG. I think it's safe to say that he's "adjusting" to his new environs....
  5. Actually it wasn't a victory "lap", it was more like PJ and Riverbrian riding off slowly together into the sunset...towards a hotel in Bismarck...to...you know...the brokedown hurler end of the line...I warned you about where those old nags would end up leaving you
  6. The ladies all loved Pepi...... and Carmen Fanzone, too. Just ask her.
  7. 2 HRs and a single. 6 Homers in 17 games. The Eastern League leader in HRs has 15. The chicken littles are running for cover as Sano makes a legitimate bid to win 2 Home Run titles in 2 different leagues in the same year.
  8. You mean Andrew Albers. Matt Albers pitched 2.1 scoreless innings and got the win for the Indians tonight in the 19-10 epic against the White Sox.
  9. The Twins pitching staff seems to be striving extra-hard to make their HR/9 rate more league-normative. (They're helping KC hitters more towards the league HR median too-- the Royals just leap-frogged the Marlins out of last place in HRs.)
  10. Here's a recent illustration of the confusion: This was an actual very recent exchange from a very recent thread. I thought it was a great, pithy and fun response. But, it now stands out just a few days later..... the response was made by an administrator. In a very similar vein in this very thread, a pretty inocuous second-hand remark was made about Gleeman and was summarily deleted for violating TD policy. I'm not saying that anyone played favorites towards an admin. over a poster, just that the arbitrariness of the enforcement of the policy is a constant headscratcher.
  11. And the Braves... And the Rays... And the Red Sox... And the Rangers... And the Giants... Being smart and not stupid about who you pick and how they are developed and profiling what those teams are doing right is a more illuminating cautionary tale in telling the Twins to get off the Schneid, already..... as opposed to KC Royals scare tactics. These teams draft and develop talent with a consistently smart and comprehensive plan and aren't overly dependent on getting top 5 picks year after year like KC.
  12. Must add Tampa Bay, Cincinnati, Baltimore as they are also perfect fits (18-20 in RP ERA). Failing/fading closers for 2 and/or poor lefty options, and all 3 teams are on a limited budget with some very good prospects on the horizon.
  13. And neither of Sano and Buxton look like busts like Delmon, and have more fit the types that are never going to stop the continuous process of working hard at getting better..... as laid back California Delmon Young ended up doing, getting fat and out of shape in the process. I have never been one to hand out hyperbole on a whim, year-over-year these 2 are demonstating that they are driven and are dealing with the areas of the game where they are deficient (in addition to Sano's markedly improved contact rate and improved K rates, his glove is also getting rave reviews this year- he's diligently putting in the work--- Buxton has all the tools and could coast to the major leagues as a #2 overall pick---- and yet he too, is humbly putting in the work and seeing year-over-year improvements in all phases of his game)....... they will end up being very special ballplayers for the Twins.
  14. Test them too. The return would obviously be a whole lot lower, even in a package deal.
  15. A lot of fun went out of TD about the same time that "Independent" and "Irreverent" were dropped from the TD motto.
  16. The Pirates already have 2 of the top 3 relievers in baseball in Grilli and Melancon and a pretty decent lefty in Justin Wilson. Not likely they would get that desperate unless one of them goes down.
  17. The Twins have the #1 relief pitching ERA in the AL (#2 overall behind the Braves). Added to that, all the very intriguing RP arms in the pipeline...... That's looking to deal from a position of excess. Please elaborate on what big gains will be made from trading temporarily overvalued players (Clete Thomas?) And yes, Glen Perkins (who it can be argued is having a career year) should only be traded when he "fills a glaring need for another team" because presumably TR can rob them blind in the process of their desperation.
  18. I agree it's a very team-friendly contract, he's a great MN guy and unquestionably one of the team's best pitching assets. But he's of little use to a team that's spinning its wheels this year, and probably next year. There are multiple hard-throwing relief pitchers coming up in the system. If you can get a top SP, C or SS candidate (of which the Braves, for example, have many), you have to consider the deal- and important to remember, not many closers dominate for long periods of time like Mariano Rivera did.
  19. Because closers might be overvalued by many GMs in general and are in general, a luxury on a losing team? Plus, it's pretty much the Twins only tradeable asset at the major league level that affords at least a chance to make the team better in the long-term.
  20. The Braves would probably decide they don't have the need for Perkins. But if the circumstances would change, the Braves are richly deep in areas the Twins aren't--- SP, SS and C. I like Wood as a Starting Pitcher in the deal- but it seems doubtful they'd jettison him in-season as they are currently using him out of the pen as a lefty- they have other decent looking SP prospects, as well. Evan Gattis is on the DL and part of the 3-headed catching alignment- he's the Braves most productive hitter with a .373 wOBA- so- not gonna happen. But, they do have 2 other terrific catching prospects, top-ranked defensive specialist, Christian Bethancourt and an absolute masher, Josh Elander. Both would definitely be blocked if the Braves re-sign McCann. Speaking of blocked, the ridiculous depth at key positions continues at SS for the Braves. Not only do they have the best fielding SS in baseball in Andrelton Simmons, they also have 23 year old Tyler Pastornicky (major league ready) and Jose Peraza (high ceiling 19 year old), among other SS possibilities. As far as 1B goes? Plenty of in-house options for the Twins already and a fairly easy position to acquire talent when in need. If they can pull off something for their best trading prospect in Glen Perkins, it would have to be to improve the most pressing areas of need.
  21. Ryan better be out in front of this passive-agressive PR campaign and demanding the moon, he'd get multiple offers, it's just that there's just so little history that he can pull this one off.
  22. His 5-toolsieness certainly makes it possible he leap-frogs Sano to the major leagues. I'm guessing when they both finally stick they will regularly surpass those levels.. There are 13 players in all of baseball that have an OPS over .895 over the last 5 years- 2009-13 (Joe Mauer is ranked 13th). I am willing to state right now that both Sano and Buxton will have at least one, if not multiple 5-year periods in their careers where they match or exceed that minimum threshold number.
  23. Well, actually it will mostly be the "suckers" on the other side of your bet, Mandalay is mostly just holding the money...
  24. .....But that could get pretty messy in such a confined space.....
