  1. Oh c'mon, Jerry White was frogmarched out the door for his "transgressions".
  2. Please feel free to list, specify, delineate and annotate. I'm having a much harder time coming up with a "number" beyond "One" (Meyer-Span trade).
  3. Ding, ding ding. Or possibly throw Corey Hart into the 1B FA mix, possibly a reasonable deal is available for a huge bounce-back candidacy. And Hart could fill both 1B and RF situationally. Still want to consider Positional Flexibility at Third Base as part of the Mauer mix.
  4. Agreed. I didn't forget that and I understand that that is the case. But the posting fee doesn't count towards the payroll, and all the advantages that it entails. Pohlad is on public record that the embarrassment must stop, and that he will open the checkbook- and the last 2 years of cost-cutting, the various windfalls of revenue streams from Target Field, coupled with the "found money" from the new media deal makes paying out a one-time posting fee go from feasible to very do-able....but of course, we resume our in-kind agreement..... it won't happen/
  5. Maybe he chose to begin alphabetically?

Well-stated. As the old saying goes, when you're not moving ahead, you're falling behind. It's wearying to see miserable teams like the Marlins and White Sox match up with the Twins and appear to provide far more hope for the future. Other than Dozier establishing himself and Pinto giving a good September showing, there is little else that the Twins demonstrated that suggested a rebuilding team taking steps leading to anything that could be construed as "improvement".
  7. Where was it I said that? Merely quoted facts Mikewantswins stated it accurately. The big increase in attendance almost always occurs the year after a successful season (like a World Series win). The Jack Morris offseason signing after '90 can debatedly be argued to have spurred offseason buzz and interest and generated some increased season-ticket activity and advance ticket sales- but certainly not the bulk of the 31% increase-never claimed any particular number on my part- just refuted an unsupported blanket statement to the contrary. But it's important to consider, that when you strike gold like McPhail did on a Home-town Hero riding to the rescue and leading you to the pennant, there're plenty of feel-good bandwagon-jumpers more apt to ride that Meme and make a walk-up ticket purchase.
  8. Tanking for multiple years sure worked out for the Royals fans, hasn't it? Baltimore still hasn't recovered previous fan interest from their long-term tenure in the wilderness. And generating interest that puts fans in the seats is kind-of the main point for a sports franchise- healthy, and predictable, year-after-year profits means your favorite baseball team has even better means to acquiring the elite talent we all crave.
  9. Tom Kelly was working with Calvin Griffith's and Andy McPhail's players for the first 8 years of his tenure. Carl Pohlad dropped his commitment to remaining perenially competitive soon after the 2nd World Series win (not enough ROI, paying off the collusion case, attempting to break the Players Union in 94-95, were all greater priorities). Terry Ryan was in charge during Kelly's last 7 years in the wilderness. Ron Gardenhire's 5 90+ win seasons is partly diminished by the unbalanced schedule that gave the Twins almost half of their scheduled games intra-divisionally- in the weakest Division in the AL, if not all of baseball. He was blessed to have MVPs and Cy Young winners on his roster, which obviously makes a manager's job less challenging. While the 00s were feel-good in Twinsland (and Gardy deserves the credit for constantly getting the team in position to compete for postseason), it masked Gardenhire's biggest failing- not growing within his job. He perenially crawled into the fetal position when playing the AL East, and particularly so in postseason sweep after postseason sweep.
  10. +1 Well stated and documented (thanks for reminding me of the Cano farce in July). You speak for many- it's not hate, its the rotting philosophical staleness and bland messaging that epitomizes this organization, you aptly provided yet further ammo to the POV to back up your fairly stated points.
  11. Yes, you did. Not to be flippant, but this has been hashed out after each Ryan interview, and Ryan repeatedly comes up short in any claims to be embracing the ways in which the game has changed since he first came on the scene.
  12. It might be interesting if you could juxtapose this snapshot of Desiree and Paul with one of that "younger couple", Carol and Ron.
  13. Actually, Buster was correct, his ERA for 2012-13 was, in fact, 4.76. Major League Leaderboards » 2013 » Starters » Dashboard | FanGraphs Baseball But, in addition to maintaining his high K/9, throwing a No-No, and his xFIP being 3.68- his SIERA was 3.86. He's a better bounce-back candidate than Dan Haren (2-year FIP 4.18, xFIP 3.85, SIERA 3.85), still throwing 200 innings with a rubber arm (148 pitches thrown in his No-Hitter). Lincecum probably deserves the money, not really that much of a head-scratcher at all.
  14. I like it when a phrase is coined, particularly when they just so happen to exemplify the Twins in just about every aspect of the game in this decade thus far.
  15. No...but TR got smiley bonus points for "not making any large FA signings"...Because...they "wouldn't help"....even though, now, based on this interview with TR, and what Jim Pohlad has stated....large FA signings will help...it gets confusing......
  16. The answer we got was "Because he's a good GM.".....which apparently is supposed to cut off all debate and alternative proposals. Even when asked for.
  17. Why not just have your 13th...and 14th man...in Rochester....or on the DL?
  18. Sorry, but this statement is what's, demonstrably, not true.....just your opinion.
  19. My post was a direct response to what had been flatly stated as a fact. I specifically made no reference to it being "all to see 2 players". Of course, those 2 players did heighten preseason interest and directly led to increased ticket sales- before any wins or losses took place....and also of course- their outstanding seasons in those specific years I mentioned directly led to significant improvements in on-the-field performance. (Uhh, in 1996, Molitor was in a season long pursuit of 3000 hits- a prime reason to come out to the ballpark to see a still-losing team, not a winning team. By 1998, Molitor was turning 42 and a shell of his self).
  20. Despite the fact that you can't satisfy some folks no matter what you say....let me add: 8) Solve the expanded platooning options issues by setting a strict limit for pitchers on the 25-man roster at 12...which can be readily accomplished by employing the DL strategically.....and especially by utilizing a couple more younger and limited service time RPs with unlimited options like Tonkin and Thielbar on shuttle runs between the Twins and Rochester.
  21. Brian Dozier is All In, too: "He's been a huge help to me, not only as a second baseman but just everything. He kind of changed the way I prepare, I guess, for a game," Dozier said. "We already have a really good coaching staff. To add another good one only makes us better. … "When you see Paul Molitor, Hall of Famer, you're all ears no matter what."
  22. And a pair of Secret Decoder "Reading Between the Lines" Glasses.
  23. I think it's within the Twins wherewith-all to sign Haren, Hughes and Tanaka. If all 3 were signed at the numbers you propose, you're looking at $8.5/yr for Haren, $6.5/yr for Hughes and let's say $10M/yr for Tanaka. That's only $25M per year and seems entirely do-able. I just don't like the thinking that Tanaka should be considered automatically out of our price range, Target Field was built for just such an acquisition. Season Ticket sales and International marketing revenues would skyrocket for Terry Ryan for taking Jim Pohlad at his word...and finally firing the Shot Heard Around the World. Both Haren and Hughes, and an impact FA target like Ellsbury might be immediately more inclined to consider the Twins and Jim Pohlad's sincerity in "spending money" to avoid future embarrassment as rock-solid-sentiment. Heck, you could also trade Correia for prospects or combined in a package deal for a First Baseman.....and now you've knocked down your annual cost for the SP acquisitions to $20M and helped fill a hole at another spot. Throw in Ellsbury and the payroll still comes in well under $100m.
  24. It still doesn't answer the question that wasn't asked of Ryan, namely, why is Molitor a "good fit" now, when according to Ryan, he wasn't a "good fit" last year, or any year previous to now? Ryan said that he and Gardy had "discussed (Molitor) at length at previous times", and yet up until today he has been forever-spurned from joining the field staff on a regular basis. What changed?
  25. Twins attendance 1990: 1.752M Twins sign Jack Morris Twins attendance 1991: 2.294M (31% increase in overall attendance). Twins attendance 1995: 1.058M (72 games) Twins sign Paul Molitor Twins attendance 1996: 1.437M (81 games) (21% increase in per/game attendance.)
