  1. Not likely to happen until/if Zuke's production collapses, if we stay competitive. And aren't the players all worn out with the creative playing time of guys out of position on the field? Mauer in RF won't likely take his mind off of his struggles, he's soon near a point where a trip to the DL is coming if he doesn't turn this around soon. Mauer will likely DH or take a day off for the very few times that Morales takes the field at 1st, and since they want Morales to stay healthy to maximize their return on investment, that won't be very many times. It's 115.71 games caught, to be exact, but consider.... ...That with Morales here, and when/if Pinto goes down, Kurt's DH appearances this year are now likely going to be with him playing at catcher instead, and the Fryer/Hermann catching ratio per Suzuki would likely be even lower than the Suzuki to Pinto ratio of 71.5%-28.5%. Probably no better than 20% or maybe just once a week, if the Twins stay competitive (knowing Gardy). I calculated using the Zuke-Catching-at-5-of-6-games measure for the remaining games, which would put Zuke on the 131 pace (counting the 4 games at DH).
  2. Exactly right, on both, and also when/if Suzuki begins to wilt. Suzuki is currently on pace for 131 games, which he hasn't been asked to do since 2011. Big question if he can keep the same pace nearing age 31 from when he was age 27.
  3. Actually, as I stated, I saw TWO hits, one in each appearance on consecutive nights. Just some food for thought.
  4. And tonight's big winner IZZZ... kab 21. Well played, SIR! (Sorry I didn't have time for imprinting, but hey, it's the thought that counts, right? Probably one you won't post too conspicuously on your mantle.) http://images.all-free-download.com/images/graphiclarge/blue_ribbon_5267.jpg
  5. Former Cy Young award winner and long-time Dodger and A's great, Bob Welch dies at his home, cause of death yet unknown http://abcnews.go.com/Sports/wireStory/pitcher-bob-welch-dies-57-24076055. Since Denny McClain won 31 games in the 1968 season, the mark for most wins in one season since then is shared by Steve Carlton (27 in 1972) and Welch (27 in 1990). Welch had publicly disclosed battling alchoholism throughout his big league career. In the book he co-authored about his alcoholism, he claims being "stone-cold sober" during his epic 5+ minute World Series battle as a 21-year old rookie against "Mr October", Reggie Jackson, in 1978, posted here for your viewing pleasure (it's pretty amazing): http://m.mlb.com/video/v31120059/1978-ws-gm2-welch-sits-down-reggie-in-epic-atbat/?partnerId=as_lad_20140610_25716496
  6. Yup, and Dozier needs one even worse.
  7. Then you haven't been in the hallway on the way to the Twins' pressroom:
  8. Ummm, that would be....never?
  9. Heh, absolutely right. (For that matter, I'd prefer May pitching "today" in Toronto instead of Correia).
  10. Yet....it seems to be getting close to yet. It's arguable that you could get him down in Rochester, playing every day and brushing up and applying what he's learned....meanwhile, reinvigorating his bat... so that when Suzuki has his inevitable drop-off, Pinto is ready to step into a bigger role with the Twins.
  11. Maybe Pinto could get an early start on catching Meyer and May this month in Rochester, then?
  12. That's about where I stand on this debate. The argument about working with Steiny was OK, but now that Morales is here, let Pinto take what he's gotten from the major league braintrust and put it to work on a daily basis in Rochester for the time being. Could Hermann's wrist injury be the only reason why Pinto is still with the Twins? FTM, anyone have a status report on when Hermann is expected back in the lineup? And Hicks to Roc. is a fait accompli once Fuld is back in the fold.
  13. Johnson already was "rewarded" this year (not too impressively). You didn't mention Darnell, and he vastly outperformed Johnson in his major league appearance. Pino is a minor league journeyman. Achter is having a good year, but there's a reason he is a relief pitcher. You should reward the best talent if it's a close call, therefore... May...Meyer...
  14. All true, but he gave up a hit in both appearancea last weekend, both on FBs. If college hitters can guess right and occasionally hit his best stuff, he may have to to upgrade that change in the bigs.
  15. Very good. There's no doubt that the make-over of the lineup must be accompanied by a make-over of the pitching staff. Beyond looking for a top-end pick-up arm from the sellers (Cahill is likely just the first DFA-type, straight-out trades like Samardzija and Price and lesser arms also might be considered), it's now time to consider, and perhaps tryout the various AAA (and at least 2 of the AA) arms, as well as maybe later, Burdi- as if the results of last 2 days, from both the starters and the pen, aren't indicative enough that it's time for some serious consideration of ALL of the options out there.
  16. I noted that Burdi did give up a line drive single on Saturday on a straight-line FB that, IIRC, was clocked at 97 or 98. A more effective change-up will definitely help keep major league hitters a little more off-balance, when looking specifically for the big heater.
  17. Don't get me wrong, I would have had Meyer pitching in the bullpen over a month ago, but it is what it is...the Twins seem in no hurry to move him up. Perhaps with a 60-day DL move for Pelfrey he gets on the 40-man?
  18. Vargas will qualify for the world team, as would Berrios. Meyer and May could play on the US team. Seeing only 2 of those 4 will still be worth the price of admission.
  19. And not just for the pictures....(from his Twitter page):
  20. Anxiously looking forward to your article, Andrew. How's your Spanish? Hope you can get a face-to-face with Kennys and Eddie for starters, for sure. New Britain (or wherever the AA affiliate lands) is going to be the Twins minor league place to be for the next few years. Better order some more dart boards!
  21. Did anyone else see him close out the Super Regional on Saturday night? He struck out the last 2 guys on pitches that seemed to explode into the ground, like he was throwing a split-finger FB, leaving the batters swinging at dirt. I don't know if that's what the pitch was, but for sure, it was unhittable at any level. The night before, he finished off the last guy on 2 consecutive nasty sliders.
  22. Right, it's likely more than $12M , maybe closer to double that, is coming off the books in 2015.
  23. http://www.milb.com/assets/images/3/2/8/37568328/cuts/9YPcvyRk.jpg Souhan is currently working the Ft Myers beat, and gives us the latest insights on Jose Berrios. http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/262462121.html?page=2&c=y It turns out, Berrios became one of the Twins brightest pitching prospects, almost by accident. The high school he attended had no team, so he was a jack of all trades for his Dad's travel team, but never a starting pitcher. As the draft approached, the person handling his affairs told him his best chance to get picked was as a pitcher, to which he colorfully responded: Manager Doug Mientciewicz held nothing back with this effusive praise: And the issue of work ethic came up yet again for a Twins young prospect. Despite his smaller size, Souhan describes his frame as "built like a middleweight boxer." Hmm, a boxer who has recently been hitting 98MPH on the gun, late in the game? I think this guy has the wherewithal to go all 9 rounds, if in fact, that's the case. Berrios seems to pass the work ethic test with flying colors: Jose's goals for the rest of the season:
  24. It looks like it's an issue with the sinker, his GB% is way down. Other bad luck numbers stand out, as Pseudo mentioned BABIP for one, as well as a low strand rate- there's a rookie SS in Arizona, that may or may be an issue, but the year over year comparisons- DPR, RngR, Inside Edge rates, are all down at SS for the D-Backs. Again, his K rate is above his career norm, but his FIP/xFIP in 2014 come in comfortably below his career averages.
  25. And possibly David Hurlbut and Tyler Jones from Ft Myers, as well (What the heck, even Berrios might be under consideration with one or two more lights-out outings- see accompanying story- http://twinsdaily.com/showthread.php/11940-%E2%80%9CI-said-OK-no-problem-I%E2%80%99ll-be-a-pitcher-%E2%80%9D). Any worry about hollowing out pitching depth at the lower levels is completely overblown, IMO. Plus, there are always AAAA guys getting waived by other teams, who could be signed and thrown in to the mix if the absolute worst happened.
