  1. Identifying this obviously urgent need, I sure wish the Twins would have addressed the injury situation and the temporary loss of 2 legit bats with an additional farm bat instead of promoting a glove in Florimon.
  2. For all of the angst about the Starting pitching staff to start out the season, they really have been performing about as well, or better, than we expected (OK, at least what I expected) since May 1. After a disastrous April with an ERA/FIP of 6.08/4.70, since then the ERA/FIP for the SPs has been very good, with room to get even better- with an upgrade from both Nolasco and the eventual replacement for Deduno- ~3.96/3.77.
  3. I figured.....Just posted for clarification, I didn't want any new call-up controversy to rear its ugly head, yet again. Enough closed threads on the day already.
  4. It sounded so nice, I think he said it twice:
  5. http://media.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/2014/06/01/images/milbf_33345747_th_13.jpg It turns out, not just the local rubes are noticing that Trevor May, he of the 2.91 FIP, second best in the International League, might finally be at his jump-off point after Monday night's gem for Rochester: Since joining the Twins organization, May has repeatedly demonstrated in interviews his cerebral approach to pitching. This piece was no different. Although he gave the Twins coaching credit for not sweating giving up a hit and focus on limiting his walks, the author and May feel that a change he himself made in his approach to each start has been the key, coupled with an uptick in maturity: Be sure to check out the videos in the article that highlight great examples of how he is able to not only use his FB for strikeouts, but also for his Curve and Change-up: http://www.milb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20140618&content_id=80285038&fext=.jsp&vkey=news_milb&sid=milb
  6. Looks like this thread will close itself.
  7. If Pino doesn't work out, perhaps we can coax DeVries out of retirement?
  8. Maybe the "mystery" involved a continuation of the Twins concerted movement this spring to get more 30+-year old veteran presence in the clubhouse, or maybe they just wanted to set a new record enabling just such a press release:
  9. What is it about DeVries 5.42 FIP and now being completely out of baseball that can be classified as "good results"?.... and also, that says having him pitch any innings for a rebuilding team is somehow, some sort of "madskillz stop-gap strategizing" over the rest of baseball? There was nothing in his pedigree before his call-up that suggested he had a prayer of major league success. Why waste a moment of time on a 1 in 10,000 chance of sustained success? A good financial reason to deem this type of move a "success" is by pre-emptively cutting bait on guys like this? Really? And regarding the excuse you have used for not bringing up May, the Twins knew what was coming with Deduno and could have withheld May from his Monday night appearance.
  10. Ahh... so that's it! There's always an exception to the rule, even the unwritten ones. (I've gotta write that down....) http://ssqq.com/information/images/exception.jpg
  11. At the same age, Ortiz was mashing AAA PCL pitching with similar K/BB ratios. Interestingly, another potential comp is Kendrys Morales (both Kendrys and Kennys are switch hitters), who also played at Salt Lake City at age 23, and put up an OPS 100 points lower than Ortiz and 50 points lower in SLG. Morales in AA @ 22, a year younger than Vargas, put up numbers very, very similar to Vargas in SLG, but 44 points worse in OBP. Logically then, it follows that Vargas has a BB% inbetween the two at the same age, with a better K% than both. Yes, he is a year behind them developmentally, and its actually more than that, as he's only played one full season of pro ball before this year, so that might reflect well on the possibility that Vargas' full potential ceiling has yet to be tapped. Having said all that, it seems fair to say that Vargas has a chance to catch up with his two peers, and hit numbers somewhere around or slightly above Morales. 20 HR and a Morales-like career .478 SLG average doesn't seem to be an overly optimistic target.
  12. Uhhh, why aren't these assets pitching and helping a team in the major leagues right now?
  13. Poor man's David Ortiz.
  14. I prefer Miami's way of calling up guys who actually offer more than stop-gap benefits. If the team was competing for a division, then guys like Albers and Pino coming up to shore up a short-handed staff makes sense- but since they both have no place in the Twins future, in this case- not so much.
  15. Exactly what? As we've all-too-frequently seen in the recent past (Albers, Walters, DeVries), you are quoting the least-important, least-predictive stats to construct a house of cards argument.
  16. Imagine what we can get for Eric Fryer?....and unlike Pino, he actually has some limited major league experience. Why, this team is just chock full of previously unclaimed reclamation projects with secret trade value- just waiting to be scooped up by other teams.
  17. Except that Pino is not doing the best in Rochester right now, your assumptions about who's best at Roc. don't fly under simple, less than rigorous, scrutiny. Calling for calling up M & M isn't overblown eagerness, it's just basic logic based on pretty overwhelming data points- deserved promotions for both M & M, and also for what's best for the team, both for now and for the long-term.
  18. The Twins appear to be in denial about all of these basic facts, and this after all of that public gnashing of teeth about the alleged "mystery" of who to call up. And this after calling up Albers, Walters, DeVries, et al....all of whom demonstrated unsustainable "mastery" of AAA. Oh BTW, the facts are even worse for Pino in terms of his age, he actually turns 31 before the end of this year. Maybe you were thinking of our other prize 29-year-old journeyman, Kris Johnson?
  19. Bringing up another bat rather than another glove is looking more and more like the option the Twins should have chosen. Red Sox need a bat in the lineup due to injuries and all-around slumping, they bring up Brock Holt and Garin Cecchini, the Twins, in the identical predicament, bring up Fry-Daddy and P-Flo.
  20. I kinda hope Gardy's more willing to kick a few rears into gear.
  21. Only, just, "Probably"? Let's not go out on a limb or anything, RB
  22. Rob Antony appears to be leaning more towards the ominous direction (as a possible change in roles with the Twins and/or maximizing value as a future trading chip): http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/263578461.html
  23. Is this statement really the "only certainty?" In point of fact, promoting May and Meyer might actually be the prudent and less sexy course of action for the "let's-rebuild-the-right-way-for-the-long-run" crowd, by getting the Twins best and most talented assets for the long term, the major league experience they appear to be more than ready for...thus preparing them for being more competitive and more impactful cogs in the Twins rotation in 2015.
